IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship is currently in its
10th year after the inaugural tournament was held in Calgary in 2008. Subsequently, the event was held in Fussen,
Germany, in 2009, Chicago in 2010, Stockholm, Sweden, in
2011, Zlin, Czech Republic in 2012, Heinola, Finland in 2013,
Budapest, Hungary in 2014, Buffalo, New York in 2015 and
St. Catharines, Ontario in 2016.

the tournament. She is now undefeated in four games at the
IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship over the past
two years.
TEAM USA FIRSTS: Eleven players made their national
team debuts in the opening game against Russia on Saturday and four players recorded their first points. Anneke
Linser (1-1), Clair DeGeorge (0-1), Delaney Drake (0-1)
and Maureen Murphy (1-0).

COACHES’ CORNER: Joel Johnson, associate
head coach of the University of Minnesota women’s
ice hockey team, was named head coach of the U.S.
Women’s Under-18 Team for the 2016-17 seasons ...
Joining him as assistant coaches are Katie Lachapelle,
assistant women’s ice hockey coach at Boston University, and Courtney Kennedy, associate head women’s
ice hockey coach at Boston College. Molly Schaus,
Fan Development Coordinator with the Anaheim Ducks,
is the goaltending coach.
REPEAT PERFORMANCE: Team USA’s roster features
eleven players who helped the 2016 U.S. Women’s
National Under-18 Team earn a gold medal at the
IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship. They
are Cayla Barnes, Jesse Compher, Alex Gulstene,
Taylor Heise, Natalie Heising, Emily Oden, Gracie
Ostertag, Catherine Skaja, Taylor Wente, Madeline
Wethington and Grace Zumwinkle. Twenty players on
the roster also participated in the 2016 Under-18 Series
vs. Canada in August.
A NATIONAL APPEARANCE: Cayla Barnes helped
the U.S. Women’s National Team as the youngest member of the roster for a pair of exhibiiton games against
Canada last month.
UNDER-18 SERIES PERFORMERS: Twenty players on
the roster also participated in the 2016 Under-18 Series
vs. Canada in August.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Eleven players are making their
debut in this particular tournament, including two players, Nicole LaMantia and Allyson Simpson, who are
representing Team USA for the first time in their career.
CAPTAIN BARNES: Cayla Barnes is serving as team
captain and the alternate captains are Taylor Wente
and Grace Zumwinkle. It is the second consecutive
event that Barnes has served as captain for Team USA,
after fulfilling the same capacity for the U.S. Women’s
Under-18 Select Team at the Under-18 Series vs. Canada in August.
AGE APPROPRIATE: The average age of Team USA is
16.6 years old. Cayla Barnes, who turned 18 on January 7, is the oldest member of the team, while 15-year
old Dominique Petrie is the youngest.
MAKING A STATEMENT: Members of Team USA represent eight different states. Minnesota leads the pack
with 11 representatives, followed by Illinois with three
players. California and New York have two players each
and Alaska, Michigan, New Jersey and Texas all had
one.
TEAM FIRST: Some members of Team USA are already teammates on other teams, including five players
who skate for Shattuck St. Mary’s (Natalie Buchbinder,
Clair DeGeorge, Maureen Murphy, Gracie Ostertag,
Allyson Simpson)

RECAPPING LAST YEAR: The 2016 U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team racked up
three preliminary-round wins against Czech Republic (6-0), Russia (6-0) and Canada (4-1)
to finish atop Group A and earn a quarterfinal bye. In the semifinal, the U.S. defeated Sweden 4-0 to secure a match up with rival Canada in the gold-medal game. The U.S. topped
Canada, 3-2, in an exciting overtime victory to claim the gold medal, The United States
finished the tournament 4-1-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L), outscoring opponents 23-3.
TEAM BUILDING: USA Hockey announced the 22-player roster for the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team on Dec. 9. The team held a pre-tournament camp from Dec. 30-Jan.
2 in Newark, New Jersey in preparation for the tournament.
