Have the students complete an open sort contrasting the short ŭ (CVC), long
ū (VCe), long ū (ue), and long ū (ui) words. Upon completion of the sort,
emphasize the key points described below. Although this sort was designed
to be an open sort, you may choose to add headers. You may also choose to
direct students to sort by sound, pattern, or sound and pattern.

Key Points:
 short u – one vowel signals the short vowel sound- Closed syllable(CVC)
