3. As we heard this weekend, there are many misconceptions about what submission means for husbands and wives, and for Christians in general. How would you explain biblical submission to someone based on the following examples of Jesus? John 13:12-17 Matthew 3:13-15 Marriage Ephesians 5:21-33 Pastor Lanny Penwell March 12, 2017 The Christian Marriage I. Directions to Wives A. What submission does not mean: 1. A husband takes the place of Christ. “All things [are] in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” Ephesians 1:10 Matthew 26:47-54 2. Giving up independent thought. 4. How might our relationships look different if we were to model the submission shown in Philippians 2:3-4? 5. Wrap up your time together in prayer for one another. 3. A wife should give up efforts to influence her husband. “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.” 1 Peter 3:1-2 4. A wife should give in to every demand of her husband. “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22 5. Being unequal in Christ. B. What submission does mean: 1. Respect. 2. What considerate leadership does not mean: 1. Harsh or domineering use of authority. “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” 1 Peter 3:7 2. Lesser importance for a wife. 3. Husbands always getting their own way. Sacrificial love. “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Ephesians 5:25 2. Tenderness / gentleness. 3. Nurturing care. 4. Commitment. 5. A living picture of Christ's love for his church. DIGGING DEEPER 1. Often times we’re unwilling to put others first, especially those closest to us, when we feel they are undeserving or aren’t living up to their end of the bargain.
