For the past 25 years, teams
from police departments around
the world have come to Baker,
California to take part in what
can be described as one of the
most grueling foot races around.
The "Baker 2 Vegas" 120-mile
relay covers some of the most
inhospitable land around. Temperatures can range from 100
degrees at starting time and fall
to below freezing in the early
morning hours of the race. It
can be raining, snowing and
contain wind gusts of over 40
mph.
This year's team from
Glendora was a joint effort with
the La Verne Police Department.
This team competed in the category for Police Department
with 500 or less sworn personnel. There are approximately 11
categories for teams to compete
in depending on their size and if
they have any non-sworn personnel running on their teams.
The race begins just outside
of Baker, California and goes
along California Highway 127 to
Pahrump, Nevada. From there
the race makes its way to Las

Finkbiner has held the post for
more than one term.
All of the other councilmen
have served as Mayor, except
for the new member. Mayor
Davis is also the Chaplain for
the Glendora Police Dept.
Such harmony is not typical
of some other San Gabriel Valley councils.
"This event is all done off-hours
and there is zero costs incurred
by the department or city," said
Henderson. "The runners and
support team members pay
their own way, take their own
vacation time and depend on the
generous support of local businesses for donation like gasoline, vehicles and water. The
effort put forward by everyone
is genuine and requires a real
dedication because the race is
so grueling and far from a vacation that some might think
when they hear Las Vegas being mentioned."
The race was originated by
members of the Los Angeles
Police Department in 1984
when just 19 teams competed
in the first race. Since that time,
race has become the premier
race in the United States for
police departments. This year's
race was the first time Glendora
has placed first in a category in
the 16 years that they have
competed. "The race is a great

COVINA/SGV — On Saturday, March 28, Assemblyman Ed Hernandez recognized
the Woman of the Year along
with Women of Achievement.
The special event was held at
the Covina Woman’s Club.
Special guest speakers were
Board of Equalization Member,
Dr. Judy Chu, Council member Peggy Delach, City of
Covina, and Alice Slaughter,
President, Covina Woman’s
Club.
Corporal Irene Meza of the
West Covina Police Department
was named 2009 Woman of the
Year for the 57th Assembly District.
Assemblyman Hernandaz
said, “Irene Meza is only one
of ten women officers in the
West Covina Police Department,
and one of only two female detectives in the 25-member Investigative Division. She has
been recognized for her tenac-
ity and willingness to go above
and beyond the call of duty.
Police work continues to be a
predominantly male profession,
but Irene is a testimony to what
a woman can achieve and an
inspiration to women seeking
careers in law enforcement.”
There were a number of
people attending from West
Covina including Mayor Roger
Hernandez and Police Chief
Frank Wills.

it that is of immense pride for
the department," said Chief
Charles Montoya of the
Glendora Police Department.
"As you can imagine the bragging rights that come with winning is a real motivator among
police departments across the
nation, not just California."
"This year is the first time in
the sixteen years Glendora Police have been participating that
we have placed first in our division. The difference this year
has been our improved training
regiment. Only the fastest
twenty runners qualified for the
team after three separate time
trials that included races at San
Dimas Bonelli Park and on
Glendora Mountain Road," said
Glendora Captain Rob Castro,

team and one of only a handful

There was a brief challenge
between Councilmen Doug
Tessitor and Ken Herman about
who was going to get the opportunity to nominate Mayor
Davis for a second term, which
Doug Tessitor won on a technical proceedural point.
After winning the March 3rd
election, Rev. Karen Davis was
reappointed as the Mayor of
Glendora Tuesday, March 24th
The motion was made by
Councilman Doug Tessitor followed with a second by Councilman Ken Herman and was
passed unanimously. Councilman Ken Herman was appointed
as Mayor Pro-Tem.
Mayor Davis ran on a platform to improve public safety,
assuring Glendora's economic
future, protecting open space,
and working with Glendora's
youth as well as the senior citizens. Karen received the most
votes of the four candidates.
"Mayor Davis wears many
hats and she does a great job in
all the positions she holds.
She's an amazing woman,"
said Councilman Gary Clifford.
Gene Murabito, who was a
former planning board commissioner was elected to the
Glendora City Council and has
replaced the seat of Councilman
Mark Kelly, who declined to
run.

Hilton convention Center. This
year over 246 teams competed
with teams from Canada and
Germany being part of it. Over
the course of the race, 5,900
runners take part with an additional 1,000 support team members in follow vehicles and
nearly 1,000 volunteers manning the 20 different handoff
points along the course.
The Glendora/ La Verne team
had a winning time of 16 hours,
32 minutes and 40 seconds.
The second place team from
West Covina had a total time of
17 hours, 5 minutes and 25 seconds. El Monte/Monrovia Police Departments placed third.
In total there were 20 teams that
competed in the same category
as the Glendora/La Verne team.
The team captain for the winning team was Corporal Michael
Henderson, who has worked
tirelessly over the last year to
keep runner training, organizing
the support team and seeking
donations from businesses.

The Glory Of Easter
Easter is always a fun time
for family gatherings, with egg
coloring and Easter baskets,
chocolate bunnies and egg
hunts. When I was a child, my
mother always had a new hat
and I had a new dress for the
occasion. It's easy to get caught
up in all the festivities and give
little heed to what it is all about.
I wrote the following poem as a
reminder, to all of us, of the true
meaning and significance of this
glorious day:
THE GLORY OF EASTERT
All the world was filled with
gloom.
They rolled a stone across His
tomb.
Roman soldiers took their
station.
It seemed the King of all
creation,
Had fallen captive to defeat.
Was death's dark victory
complete?
Even His friends had walked
away,
Disillusioned and in dismay,
At the mockery of His trial.
One was quick to make
denial:
Cowardly Peter, stood at a

distance,
Ever loud in his insistence,
That he had never known that
One,
Who boldly claimed to be
God's Son!
How foolish, were those evil
men,
To think a stone could hold
God in!
A flash of light in that grave,
Released the One who came
to save.
A miracle happened in those
hours:
Christ conquered death and
demon powers,
He rose, victorious, healed
and well,
As Satan whimpered deep in
Hell.
Easter Morning beheld God's
glory!
Let's sing for joy and tell the
story!
Let's praise and give Him our
thanksgiving!
Because of Christ, we can be
living,
Cleansed and forgiven from
all our sin,
When we confess and invite
Him inTo our hearts to ever live,
Freedom is the gift He'll give!
We too, can walk in all His
power,
Not dreading any foe nor
hour!
For, death no linger holds its
sting!
Let bells of all creation ring,
Out the news: Christ sets us
free,
To walk in peace and victory!
