ANNA: Hello ladies and gentlemen, THIS IS the new episode of Do you cook English?
Today, let’s learn about the DEMONSTRATIVES: HERE, THIS, and THESE, THERE, THAT, and THOSE.
This is pretty easy but French people always forget to adapt the verb… HERE IS the complete table:
The GRAMMaR POINT

Voici: singular – here is, plural – here are.
Il y a: singular – there is, plural – there are.
Montrer proche: singular – this is, plural - these are.
Montrer lointain: singular – that is, plural – those are.

ANNA: So, let’s practise THESE demonstratives through cooking ! At Les Cercles Culinaires de France,
THERE ARE many chefs and today, HERE IS Tugdual, the king of crumbles…or so he likes to believe,
don’t you Tugdual !
TUG: Yes Anna.
ANNA: Yeah, exactly. IT IS pretty easy for him to cook, but what about the demonstratives?
Hazelnut crumble with fig,
apricot and almond compote
CHEF: THERE ARE too many Anna!
ANNA: Ah okay, well THAT IS a problem. Well, I have explained THESE rules! So, let me guess then:
HERE IS the recipe for a fruit crumble and HERE ARE your tips to make the best crumble ever!
THIS IS an apricot, THESE ARE apricots, THAT IS a dish, and THOSE ARE the figs. Great, THIS IS going
to be easy! So you notice that the verb changes for singular and plural nouns. IT IS a bit confusing!
The oven HERE has already been preheated to 180°C, so let’s start cooking!
THIS IS the first step: making the topping. Put the softened butter, icing sugar, and crushed hazelnuts
into a bowl and mix together.
Next we spread THIS mixture out on one of THESE baking trays. We now cook it for 5 minutes and then
leave it to cool before putting it in THAT fridge over THERE. THIS IS a really simple recipe
Now we will make the filling. THESE are delicious apricots! Cut the fruit and put it in THAT saucepan
with the brown sugar and a drop of water. Now we cook this for 5 minutes ! So, HERE IS a little secret:
add some almonds !
THERE ARE many ways to break them. THIS, for example, IS a very sharp knife, or THAT IS a small
hammer.
CHEF: Voilà!
ANNA: Ah, Tugdual, that’s great! That looks great. Ok, so, here we go then! So, looks like, who’s doing all
the washing up? You I reckon! Ok? Bye now!
