Gator
by Dale Drake
The hunt started at 8pm. We met with
Switch grass outfitter booked through
Droptine (Dave Wilkins SMGC
member). We launched the airboat at
the dock sight and the big V8 roared
to life, we were off. We had two
permits and were planning on filling
them in one night. As darkness fell
we immediately started seeing the
red eyes appear when shinned with
the guide’s spotlight. The chase was
on, we must have looked at over 100

gators all of which were too small. Well past the
witching hour, we went deeper and deeper into the
swamp on our quest to find a couple large gators. At
3:30am we finally saw a shooter out in deep water and
my hunting partner Jason had his gator. We used a
crossbow with a tether line to place a line and float on
the gator, the next step is to gently work them to the
surface. Then you use a harpoon with a much stronger
barb and rope. Then the fight is on. Once the gator
begins to tire and you can get him at water level
without too much thrashing around you then use a 44
mag bump stick. The 44 ends the fight quickly, next
the mouth must be taped for safety and in the boat it
comes. The massive shot of adrenaline started to wear
off and not being nocturnal we were starting to tire
quickly. Just at that moment we spotted another
shooter and I had my gator.
I have never been on a guided hunt before and didn’t
know what to expect but I will do this again for sure.
Everything was top notch from equipment to animals
taken.

Short Bio:
I received my first rifle in 1954 at age 8 while living on a 147 acre
farm surrounded on three sides by national forest in up-state New
York. Along with the rifle I also received an admonition on safety
from my father: “Don’t shoot the gun toward the house.” From
this I learned to massacre crows, ground hogs, squirrels, and
various and sundry other pests including mice, rats, pidgins, and
porcupines. In 1956 my family and I moved to Kentucky where
I completed high school in 1964. Immediately after graduating, I,
along with a gay friend, went to New York City where we partied
for about 6 weeks. At the conclusion of this gala time I decided
that I did not want to go to college. I joined the U.S. Air Force
where I was trained to be an “expediter” – that is, a person who
locates and procures (by whatever means necessary) needed
aircraft parts for squadron aircraft maintenance. I specialized in C130’s with a minor in F4C’s. Doing this, I
attained the rank of Sgt. while using my skills in the Congo, Dominican Republic, Philippine Islands, Thailand,
Viet Nam and of course, Hawaii. I was qualified expert in rifle as well as pistol. In addition, I was licensed to
drive a semi trailer truck which I once drove across Thailand from Ubon Ratchathani to Nakhon Phanom without
running over even one person, dog, chicken, or pig. After my honorable discharge in 1968 I went to work for a
television company as a film editor where my major responsibility consisted of splicing commercials into late
night movies. Following a path of interest and opportunity I left the TV business in 1970 with the title of director
of data processing for the corporation (2 TV and 3 radio stations). I decided that it was time to go the college.
I graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1971 (I had been taking some courses part-time) with a Bachelors
degree in Vocational Education with a minor in Economics. While completing this degree I worked full time
(night shift) at a residential school for seriously emotionally disturbed children. Given both my Voc Ed degree
as well as my experience with behavior problems I obtained a teaching job in Louisville, KY at Ahren’s
Alternative High School a school for people that had been expelled from all of the other high schools in the city.
I taught Voc Ed skills as well as typing (since I had a minor in Economics my principal equated this to Business
therefore I could teach typing.) In the summer of 1974 I was tired of the heat and humidity in Louisville so I
decided to take one graduate course at Indiana University and return in the Fall. I envisioned a summer of
reading, relaxing, and meeting young ladies to discuss the philosophical implications of Herman Hess’s writings
(i.e., “Oh, love isn't there to make us happy. I believe it exists to show us how much we can endure.”) It was quite an intellectual
success. So successful that I ended up staying in Bloomington until 1981 while completing Masters and PhD

degrees in Special Education (Behavior Disorders) with minors in Research Methods and Forensic Studies.
From Bloomington my wife (I met Esther, my wife, on a blind date while in Graduate School) and I moved
to Venice Beach, California when I took a position at California State University, Northridge. In 1986 both
my first son and the impetus to leave Southern California were born. I took a job as a Research Associate
Professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN where I specialized in writing grant proposals, crunching
numbers, doing program/project evaluations, and running large federally funded research grants in special
education. Life was good. I enjoyed my work. I traveled a lot giving presentations, speeches, and consulting
across the country and at least once, sometimes twice, a year in Europe. But, then reality hit. My son, the
impetus to leave California, started to talk and attend preschool. One evening, it dawned on my wife and I
that our son, whose name is Sam, was pronouncing it as a 2 syllable word, “Say-um.” We started listening to
him more closely. My wife’s brother, Bill, was now “Ukle Bi-yll” and a bag was a “poke.” It was time to
leave the south. So, in 1991 I took a position at Western Michigan University as an Associate Professor of
Special Education. Kalamazoo has been a great place to live and work. After 22 years at WMU I am moving
on to the next adventure in my life: semi-retirement. I just can’t quit, I like teaching too much. Semi-retirement
means that I will have more opportunities to fish, hunt, shoot, and focus more energy on the Southern Michigan
Gun Club. Being a teacher for forty-some years I would really like to develop and expand opportunities for
new shooters, both young and old, to experience a range of shooting sports. If elected to this position,
Membership Secretary, I plan on pushing this agenda. If you don’t want to see new shooters at the club don’t vote for me.

Kris Pendziszewski - Safety Officer
My name is Kris Pendziszewski. This spring, I graduated from the University of Evansville with a major in
History and minor in Legal Studies. I have been involved with shooting sports for over 10 years now. I started
off my shooting sports experience as a 4H-er learning to shoot with my father. When I was old enough, I
became a junior leader with the shooting sports program and certified to teach small bore and .22 cal rifles.
For a year, I took classes downtown at the indoor shooting range and learned the three positions precision .22
competition shooting.
For the summer of 2014, I was a shooting sports instructor with the Boy scouts of America down at camp
Krietenstein in Terra Heute, Indiana, where I taught archery to both experienced and beginning shooters. I
also help when needed with running the .22 rifle range and the shotgun clay range. I worked with my director
and the camp director to maintain range safety and range maintenance throughout the 2014 summer camping
season.
As young man, I am concerned with making shooting sports something that we can pass on to future
generations through education and information. Even at a young age, shooting sports have given me a lot of
the skills and talents that have helped me become the man that I am today. Passing on those on those skills
and talents to the next generation, so that they are ready to meet the challenges that the world will surely give
them, is truly a passion of mine. Every moment one is alive should be a teaching moment; for the teacher as
well as the student. I have a fierce hunger to learn from the more experienced members of the club, as well
as the skills of a historian, to be able to take that information and translating it into multiple formats so that a
wider scope of people can benefit from that knowledge.
John Ayres - Director at Large
* Professional Truck driver for 38 years. Retired for the last 5 years, I
had 1,750,00 accident free miles.
* Southern Michigan Gun Club member in good standing for 15 years.
*Life member of the N.R.A.
*Vice President in charge of logistical operations for the South West
Michigan Air Gun Club since 2011.
*Avid reloader of 22 different calibers and enjoy sharing my knowledge
with anyone who wants to learn to reload for economic reasons.
I enjoy participating in the following competitions and or divisions at the
Southern Michigan Gun Club. 40 bore, Gallery pistol, Rim Fire Bench Rest 50 yard outdoor, 50 yard outdoor
air gun bench rest, Center fire bench rest, Air rifle bench rest 50 foot (indoor) and air rifle Field Target matches.
I was instrumental in developing a solution to allow air gun field targets to be utilized at the Southern Michigan
Gun Club. I was tasked to keep the reactive targets off the ground and ended up developing a system that did
that and also vastly improved the ability to transport and store those targets efficiently.
Now that the bylaws have been changed I am asking for your vote for one of the 3 seats as an "At Large"
board of directors member to allow me to further serve the club that means so much to me.
Should you have any questions I can be reached by e-mail @ [email protected] or by cell @ 269-720-9845.
Thank you in advance for your support!

Nick Wagner - Director At Large
Opening Statement:
My cousin introduced me to SMGC in the summer of
2008 while I was still living in Los Angeles. After
moving back to my hometown area of Otsego/Plainwell
in autumn of 2008, I visited the club as a guest where I
learned more about what the club has to offer.
I have been a member of SMGC since June of 2010 and
began attending BOD meetings soon thereafter. I was
curious about the inner workings and organization of the
club, and was hooked immediately after my first BOD
meeting. Coincidentally, the club was in need of a
redesigned website at the time, and from my experience in web development since 1996, I volunteered
to help bring the club into the 21st century with an updated, attractive and streamlined website with
better functionality along with a secure "Members Only" section.
Aside from my interest in the administrative functions of the club, I enjoy a range of various shooting
sports and activities SMGC offers, and have increased my knowledge and skill level in the Shotgun,
Rifle, Pistol & Air Gun groups of activities. A gun club is not only a place to send rounds down
range, but it is also the perfect place to learn from other members. I was never in the armed forces.
I am not the product of a family where gun knowledge was passed down to me from my father and
grandfather. Having the ability to observe and learn from fellow responsible gun owners, from types
of guns and ammo to proper shooting form and technique, is invaluable to me. Although competition
in the shooting sports is an enjoyable aspect of participating, what is more important for me is
self-improvement.
When I learned the club will begin appointing SMGC Directors at Large with voting privileges I
realized I could help the club more and become involved in future club administrative duties.
My vision for the club, and where I believe my life experience can be of use to the club, is 1) to help
organize and implement more media technology projects the club can use for NMO meetings, various
classroom/instructional settings and online, and 2) look for ways to better reach out to less experienced
new members joining the club, and instill gun safety and responsibility in hopes of developing a more
competent gun owner to participate in our club's shooting sport activities.
