Rin Tin Tin with our trophy
The K-9 Drill Team recently marched in 2 parades. March 11 was Sedona’s St. Patrick’s Day
parade, always a festive
event with participants
In the meantime, the
judges had turned their
attention to the next
group, so never saw us
perform. But the crowds
all along the route applauded our dogs.
April Fools Day was better, at Black Canyon
City’s White Cane Parade.
Parade themes rarely apply to us, but this year it
was “Who’s your Superhero?” So our dogs were
decorated to honor Rin
Tin Tin, Old Yeller, Lassie, and Toto.
We were rewarded with
the trophy for best
marching group, and celebrated with lunch on the
dog-friendly patio at Rock
Springs Café.
Café.
Congratulations

Dog Stars Continued
After we completed this
part of the dinner we had
talks by both Terry
Heurman and Denise
Dean about their recent
trips to special dog
shows. Terry went to
Westminster Kennel
Club Show in New York
City and Denise went to
the biggest dog show in
the world - Crufts Show
in London.
Both had wonderful stories about their trips, but
in the end both agreed
that these shows are
worth a onetime trip, but
that if you really want to
see a dog show - go to
the Orlando Kennel Club
Show in Florida in December - much more
spectator friendly!
for providing raffle
prizes and Chris Knorr
for providing her wonderful program.
The final event of the
evening was a drawing
for raffle prizes.
Thanks to all who helped
organize this dinner including Cinda Sawyer

Therapy Pets of Northern AZ
Therapy Pets of Northern
AZ is thriving! They
have over 60 registered
pet teams in Flagstaff and
the surrounding area. A
team consists of a human
handler and a trained pet.
Each team is required to
pass an evaluation with a
national organization to
ensure they are competent to work in a public
setting
Their teams visit a wide
variety of organizations
including; libraries,
schools, senior living
communities, hospitals,
and hospices. Enjoying
the chance to visit with
people who need a friend
or just enjoy saying hello
to an animal is so very
rewarding
for the humans and
the pets.

Sad News
Katherine and Andrew
Sanchez Meador's dog
Kooper passed away recently. Kooper was a
blind and deaf Australian
Shepherd who learned
many obedience commands from Katherine
who learned to train him
using touch signals. Kooper was a wonder to watch and a brave
dog who enjoyed being
out in public - I don't
think he knew he had any
handicaps! Kooper also
taught many of us the
sorrow of breeding 2 blue
merle Aussies since many
of the puppies are born
blind or deaf or both. He
will be missed.

Checking In with Your
Dog on a Walk
Ideally, take your dog to a
relatively quiet spot to
walk. If this isn’t an option for you, work with
what you’ve got. Practicing in an area with lots of
distractions might require
extra patience on your
part. If you work in an
area that makes it more
challenging for your dog
to offer you the behaviors
you want, his efforts
should also be rewarded
more frequently and generously.
1. Start Reinforcing
Your Dog Immediately
Seize the moment! While
your dog is still near you
and before he ever gets
the chance to bolt forward and tighten the
leash, quickly say,
“Yes!” and offer him a
treat.
2. Try to Reward Your
Dog in Motion
I like to mark and deliver
a reward while still in motion, if possible, even if it
means I’m moving very
slowly. It can feel a bit
awkward at first while you
get used to the coordination required to mark,
reward, and walk at the
same time.
3. Talk to Your Dog
While Walking
Use your voice to stay
connected with your dog
while walking. As we’re
walking, I might say with
a happy tone, “Where
should we go today?” If I
get a tail wag or an ear
flick, I’ll take that as a
sign of interest and I’ll
add a little more excitement to my tone.
Keep Reinforcing Your
Dog
Checking in is such a
friendly habit, and it’s no
different from what we
already do when walking
and talking with a friend.
Every now and then, we’ll
turn our head to the side
to look at our friend as
she speaks. It shows we’re
listening and it keeps us
connected. Keep that
connection strong with
your own dog, and you’ll
see his leash-walking skills
grow quickly.
