SECTION ONE – SAS 19 CFM COMPRESSOR
INTRODUCTION
The SAS 19 CFM is an air cooled, high pressure-reciprocating compressor in a ‘V’
configuration. A four stage, four cylinder compressor cooled by a large pulley driven
variable pitch fan.
DESCRIPTION OF COMPRESSOR
Air for compression enters via the air intake filter and passes to the first stage cylinder where
it is compressed to approx. 3.2 bar. Passing through a heat exchanger to the second stage, it
is then compressed to 17.7 bar. On exit from the second stage it flows round a cooling
system in the fan air stream and then into a separator for condensate removal. On entering
the third stage the air is further compressed to 85.5 bar before passing through the second
cooling coil system and the condensate removal separator. Final compression to a pressure of
315 bar take place in the fourth stage after passing through a finned cooling system with the
final delivery being made at approx. 10 – 15 degrees C above ambient temperature.
Pressure gauges and safety valves are fitted to all stages of compression.
DESCRIPTION OF CHARGING PANEL
The Bauer charging panel is a remote charging facility, which eliminates the flexible leads
for charging. A fixed line from the compressor final delivery connects to the charging panel.
At the panel, the delivery air is sent to the charging adaptors on the table via four lines
operated by a lever to open and close. The charging adaptors on the table are numbered 1 – 4
reading from left to right, which correspond with the similar operating levers on the panel.
LOCATION
The Brigade has one 19 CFM compressor located at Telford Central Fire Station.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
COMPRESSORS MUST ONLY BE OPERATED BY TRAINED
PERSONNEL
TO CHARGE CYLINDERS
•
•
•
•
Connect cylinders to the charging adapters on the compressor table. (Minimum of
three twin packs at any time).
Open (pull forward) the black operating lever on the charging panel, for each
connection required.
Open the cylinder valve fully. The cylinder pressures will now equalise.
Start the compressor. Charging will automatically stop when the correct pressure has
been obtained.
TO RELEASE ON COMPLETION OF CHARGING
•
•
•
Close the cylinder valve fully.
Close (push back) the black operating lever on each lead used. The lines will now
bleed down.
Disconnect the cylinders from the charging adapters.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The following safety precautions should be observed when using the SAS 19 CFM
compressor and Bauer charging panel:
•
•
•
•
•
Never operate the black lever unless a cylinder is connected to the line for charging.
Do not operate the compressor if any doubt exists as to its serviceability.
Check the compressor log sheet (FB75) to ensure that an oil check has been carried
out. If in doubt, check the oil level before charging. (Minimum level should be half
way in the sight glass)
Check the air purity certificate to ensure that it is in date. Air purity checks are
carried out every three months.
In the event of an emergency, stop the compressor at the emergency stop (if fitted) or
the main switch and not at the stop button on the compressor.
DEFECT REPORTING
All defects to compressors must be reported to Technical Services during normal office hours
and to Control outside office hours. Technical Services will arrange for all repairs to be
carried out. The compressor must be taken out of operational service until repaired by the
authorised contractor.
