The University of Texas
Newsletter
AUSTIN, TEXAS
NO.1
JUNE, 1953
Preface to Newsletter
John T. Lonsdale, Ph.D. Director of Bureau of Economic Geology
This is our first issue of what we hope will become an
annual event. The need for some means of keeping in touch
with our graduates has been felt for many years. The Newsletter will not only keep us in touch with you but will also
keep you informed as to the whereabouts and activities of
other Texas-Exes. Since we have no "news gathering" staff
wemust depend on you to keep us informed as to your activities. We will pass theinformation along (via the Newsletter)
to your friends and fellow Texas-Exes. We will also try to
keep you posted on the happenings around The University
and particularlyin the Department of Geology.
Our greatest problem is to keep our mailing list up-to-date.
The initial mailing list was compiled from various sources,
chiefly membership lists of the various societies, and included about 1,500 names. We felt that we had valid addresses for about 1,200 and to these a self-addressed return
postal was sent. About 450 of these were returned and they
constitute the "meat" of this issue of theNewsletter. We are
sending the Newsletter to the original mailing list but for
those who did not return the postal (and some 700 did not!)
we can only hope that we have your correct address. If you
wish to receive the Newsletter in the future we urge you to
return the card (next time), so we can be certain that we
have your correct address. When you come to Austin do not
fail to come by the Department and say hello and sign the
Visitors Register.
As Chairman of the Alumni Committee of the Department
of Geology, which is charged with the responsibility of issuing theNewsletter, Ibespeak your cooperation.
Elias H. Sellards, Ph.D. Director of the Texas Memorial Museum

Faculty Activities
Dr. Robert L. Folk, formerly with the Gulf Oil Corporation in Houston joined the staff in September, 1952, to teach
sedimentation. He will take over much of the work recently
handled by Dr.Damon. Another addition to our staff is Mr.
Richard W. Rush, formerly with the Plateau Exploration
Company at Cortez, Colorado. Mr. Rush is teaching the
courses in regionalgeology formerly handled by Dr. Bybee.
Dr.Charles W. Bell,Professor of Geology, comes to Texas
in September, 1953, from the University of Minnesota. Dr.
Bell, no stranger to Texas, will specialize in Paleozoic stratigraphy and paleontology. He will take over the work formerly handled by Dr. James L. Wilson. Mr. William R.
Muehlberger will join the staff in February, 1954, as Assistant Professor to handle the work in structural geology. He
comes from the California Institute of Technology where he
expects to receive the Ph.D. degree in June, 1954. The position in structural geology has been vacant since the resignation of Dr.Gus Eifller several yearsago.
Dr. FredM.Bullard was onleave of absence for the spring
semester of 1951-1952, in order to accept a grant as Research Scholar under the Fulbright program of the State
Department. Dr. Bullard made a study of the volcanoes of
Italy in addition to travels in North Africa and Western
Europe. He returned to his teachinb duties at Austin on
February 1, and is now busy writing up the results of his
volcanic studies in Italy.
Mr. DeFord and Dr. Bullard both attended the International Geological Congress in Algiers in September, 1952.
Mr. DeFord was official delegate from the University. Since
Dr. Bullard was in Italy in the Fall of 1952, he commuted
across theMediterranean to the Congress.
Attendance at the Geological Society of America meeting
in Boston in November included Messrs. DeFord, Ellison,
Wilson, and Hutchinson. Dr. Ellison and Mr. Hutchinson
presented papers, while Dr. Wilson was presiding president
of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. Mr. James Quinn,
Technical Staff Assistant and graduate student in vertebrate
paleontology,also gave a paper.
Mr. DeFord was vice-president in charge of geology for
the Texas Academy of Science for 1952. We note in passing
that Dr. Clabaugh is vice-president in charge of geology for
the Academy in 1953.
Dr. Whitney requested full retirement, effective June 1,
1953, and a dinner in the Fall of 1953 is being planned to
honor Dr. Whitney's long years of service. Dr. Damon goes
on modified service, effective June 1, 1953. He will teach
advanced courses in sedimentation on a part-time basis.
At the beginning of the 1952-53 long session Dr. James
L. Wilson resigned to join the Shell Oil Company in Houston, and Dr. W. A. Jenkins left to joint the Magnolia Petroleum Company in Dallas. The Department regrets the loss of
these two good men from the teachingprofession.
Enrollment Figures
More than 1,500 individuals were enrolled in the Department of Geology each semester during 1952—53. Approximately 1,100 of these were in General Geology. The majors
in geology include about 120 sophomores, 80 juniors, 75
seniors,and 70 graduate students.
Raw statistics presented at the AAPG Convention in Houston show that since 1940 slightly more than 8 per cent of
the Geology B. A. and B.S. degrees granted in the United
States were from The University of Texas. This means that
one out of 12 geologists with less than 12 years experience
must have come from The University of Texas.
Alumni Functions
The most important event of 1952 was the Alumni Homecoming on November 1.Late in 1951 several of the geology
faculty members lamented the fact that the Geology Alumni
from Texas had never had a Homecoming. "Doc" Bybee
undertook to see that such an activity would take place in
1952. The SMU football date was picked as an added attraction. More than 450 alumni visited an "open house" at the
Geology Building before the game and approximately the
same number attended the Alumni Dinner after the game.
Leonard F. McCollum, president of the Continental Oil Company, was the able toastmaster. Chancellor James P. Hart
gave the principal address while Professor J. T. Lonsdale,
Professor S. P. Ellison, Jr. and Mr. Hulon T. Black spoke
briefly about the progress of the University. A rousing ova-
tion was given Dr. .L. Whitney when he was introduced.
Dr. Bybee received aLife Membership in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and a suitable scroll of appreciation as a part of the ceremonies. Ithink you Alumni
pulled a tear or two from "Doc" Bybee. A similar Homecoming is now beingplanned for 1955.
A Texas Alumni luncheon was held in Los Angeles in
April, 1952, at the AAPG Convention, with approximately
150 former students in attendance. Professors Ellison and
DeFord spoke to the alumni about current departmental activities at the University. Mr.H. A. Babione, with the Humble Oil and Refining Company in Los Angeles, presided.
Similarly, two Texas Alumni Luncheons were held in
April, 1953, at the AAPG Convention in Houston. A total
of 290 former students attended. Professors Bullard,Ellison,
DeFord, Wilson and Young brought the Alumni up to date
on current affairs. Dr. Frank J. Gardner, Five Star Oil Report Editor, was toastmasterand songleader.
Samuel P.Ellison Jr.
The Graduate Program
Since the end of World War IIthe number of graduate
students in geology at the University has greatly increased.
The new emphasis on graduate study is especially appropriate, for the State of Texas is in every respect the geological
center of the world and the University, as the largest academic institution in Texas and the surrounding states, should
be the chief center of advanced geological training and research.
At the high point about 1949-50, when many of the graduate students were supported by GI benefits, there were as
many as 130 students enrolled in geology courses leading to
a graduate degree. This number declined to about 70 in the
fall of 1952 ; but, for the first time, it showed no further decline in the spring semester of 1953, indicating, perhaps, a
reversal of the trend and future increase in numbers.
The following is a chronological list of all the Ph.D.'s in
geology from the University with the subjects (but not exact
title) of their dissertations:

It is quite easy to become a graduate student in geology at the University
of
Texas. A student may have a Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, or zoology,
for instance, and no training in geology whatsoever. The Department is pleased to
have him start at the "beginning in geology and work up to the graduate level as fast
as he can.
It is easy to get in, but it takes good, hard work to stay in and get the graduate degree. All Ph. D. candidates and all scholarship and fellowship applicants
must take the National Graduate Eecord Examination, which rates them with respect
to graduate students throughout the nation. The Department requires
its students to
pass a comprehensive qualifying examination before they can become candidates for a
graduate degree. They are also required to pass a thorough examination in English;
those who fail must do remedial work in the English laboratory. All students who
aspire to become Ph. D. cane? -Kates must pass these examinations and fulfill other
standard requirements.
