INTRODUCTION
Cappasity Easy 3D Scan™ is a professional 3D digitizing software. Upgrade from flat images to 3D visualization of
products in your online store and take your customers to the next level of a through-the-screen interaction!
Easy 3D Scan™ can produce two types of 3D content: 3D views and 3D models. To create 3D views you only
need a DSLR camera and to create 3D models you need to use an Intel RealSense™ 3D (depth) camera.
Unlike typical photos, 3D images can be viewed from any angle, including zoom mode. Potential customers get a
better picture of items they cannot touch, and as a result the online store increases sales and reduces the
number of purchase returns.
Choose what 3D format is better for your business needs:
3D View
You can create a 3D View of any object - you are only limited by the size of your photo setup. Jewelry,
accessories, toys, bags, shoes, clothes, etc.
3D Model
With the Easy 3D Scan™ program, users can easily and quickly get a 3D model to use it in Internet resources, for
app integration, editing with 3D design programs or 3D printing. The model is ready for use and doesn’t require
any manual revisions!
Easy 3D Scan™ is integrated with the Cappasity platform allowing users export 3D images directly into online
stores, websites, social networks and apps. 3D digitizing, online sharing and uploading to the Cappasity cloud
platform are absolutely free for all.

3D VIEW MODE – CREATE 3D IMAGE WITH DSLR CAMERA
To create a 3D view, you need to record a video with a 360 degree rotation using your photo camera. Just
connect a Canon DSLR to your laptop and the software will control the whole process. You can also import
a sequence of photos. Easy 3D Scan software will analyze photo data and get 3D data, so that 3D View
is compatible with Cappasity 3D viewer for VR and AR.
EQUIPMENT FOR SHOOTING
All you need is photo equipment, for example a photo light box or a shooting table with a light kit, a motorized
turntable to rotate your products, a DSLR camera and a tripod. Or you can visit the nearest photo studio and
ask them to make videos or photos of your products. It’s possible to import captured data into the software
with only one click.

DIGITIZING WORKFLOW
1.
To be able to see a live view picture from your Canon, you should connect it to your computer using a
USB cable.
Please note: you should connect the camera to the computer before the launch of the software. If you
decide to replace the camera at some point, you first have to exit the software. This is because of the
way Canon's service tool interacts with your camera. If the live view mode stopped updating, we
recommend that you restart your computer.
If you do not have a Canon camera, you can record videos yourself and then import them to the
software. ('Import Video’ button in the main menu).
2.
Your task is to shoot a video of your object being rotated. The software will use this video to create a
3D view of the object. You need to shoot a full turn and a half. If you use a Canon, please just press the
Start button; as soon as the object has been rotated a full turn and a half, please press the Stop button.
3.
Please make sure that the background is evenly lit, there are no dark spots and other objects seen
through the camera's viewfinder. You will be able to change the white balance and crop pictures, but
we recommend that you try to avoid having other objects in the shot (including parts of the turntable).
4.
Please make sure that the turntable is rotating evenly. The optimal speed for a full turn is from 30
seconds up to one minute. Many cameras cannot provide good picture quality if an object is rotated
faster. We recommend that you record several test videos where the turntable is spinning at different
speeds and then choose the optimal one.
5.
Do not forget to save the result to a file – you will have a chance to amend parameters and rebuild
your 3D view.
6.
You can save a SKU to a file. The SKU will be uploaded to the cloud and later you will be able to get an
embed code using only the SKU.
VIDEO PREVIEW SCREEN
You see this screen after your Canon has recorded a video or you have imported a video from .MOV/.MP4.
Continue – start converting video into 3D View
Save – save current data to do post-processing later
90 Rotate – 90-degree clockwise rotation
Back – back to main menu
CROP SCREEN
At this stage you can select the part of the screen that will be used to build a 3D View. You can also scale the
object's size using this tool.
The left part of the screen shows what the object will look like in the website's widget and you can also rotate
the object in this part of the screen. The right part of the screen is used to select the object in the shot.
In case your turntable rotates counter-clockwise, you can choose Reverse Rotation and change the direction of
rotation.
HOW TO EDIT THE BACKGROUND – BALANCE, COLORS, LEVELS, OTHER FILTERS
You can fix white/black balance, change color settings and adjust curves. Please note that the parameters are
applied subsequently - the curves already influence the result you got after white and black balance
adjustments have been applied.
Your task is to get a white background. To get it, choose the Set white point button and click on the background
part that is not white. You may have to use this tool several times while rotating the object to make sure that
the entire background is white. Click Done to accept your changes.
HOW TO TUNE THE 3D VIEW SHOWCASE – START FRAME, FLIP
While in the final 3D View screen menu, you can save the result and adjust additional settings.
Upload – upload to the cloud for embedding
Set Start Frame – choose the start of rotation
Crop – switch to the crop mode
Edit – switch to the filters mode
Reset View – reset the current view to the start of rotation
3D MODEL MODE – 3D SCANNING
In order to scan an object in 3D you only need an Intel® RealSense™ 3D camera or a laptop with a built-in 3D
camera. It shoots an object that is being rotated on a turntable (even a simple Lazy Susan from IKEA will do)
from all the sides. It takes only one turn to scan an object.
SCANNING REQUIREMENTS
It is important to comply with the scanning requirements determined by the characteristics of the specific Intel®
RealSense™ camera used, and account for the relevant limitations.
Choice of scanning location:
You can only scan indoors;
You can’t scan near a window in direct sunlight;
You can’t scan if the light source is directed at the Intel® RealSense™ camera;
Make sure to scan objects under uniform lighting.
What can’t be scanned using 3D cameras:
100% black objects;
Shiny or reflective objects;
You can’t scan objects smaller than a matchbox;
You can't scan symmetrical objects (like a cup without handle or a ball);
You can’t scan transparent objects (like glasses). How do you visually determine what the 3D camera
can’t see?
In Live view mode we overlay an image from a 3D camera (3D data) onto a color picture. This way, if you see
that the object has not colored zones, this implies potential scanning problems, and we can’t guarantee quality
results when the 3D model is created.
You can see in this example that the toy’s eye doesn’t fall into the 3D camera’s visibility zone because the
camera doesn’t pick up highly reflective surfaces – however, the program can correct this problem.
And in this example we see that the wineglass is completely invisible to the camera, and so we can’t scan it.
MAIN MENU
After authentication, you enter the main menu where you can select scanning modes, change settings, and view
your account information.
Open – open a file with a saved scan
Cloud – open the cloud storage
Start Scan – launch the 3D scanning process

3D SCAN
In this mode you can use an automatic or manual turntable for scanning an object. The IKEA SNUDDA or any
Lazy Susan with a matte surface will work.
Scanning on a turntable is fully automated and all you have to do is calibrate the table and then rotate it along
with the scanned object.
The menu in Turntable Scan mode:
Open – open a stored scan for export and editing
Cloud – open the cloud storage
Start – start the scanning process
Calibrate – calibrate the turntable
Shoe, Toy, General, High-res – select 3D Scanning preset
Camera – camera settings
3D SCANNING PRESETS
For convenience, we prepared several scanning profiles with different settings for 3D model creation and
different scanning accuracy. You can change them in the given mode’s main window.
General – a profile suitable for most objects. We recommend using it for default.
High-res – the same as General profile, but with more detailed mesh data. Attention! Noises around the object
can be an issue.
Shoe – highly accurate reconstruction suitable for scanning shoes.
Toy – we recommend this one for scanning furry stuffed animals
CALIBRATION
You need to place the laptop with the Intel® RealSense™ camera so that it’s located just above the scanned
object. For example, you can put your notebook on a stable stand if your turntable is on the same table.
If you have the standalone camera everything is the same. Please place it on the stand and follow our tutorial.
If part of an object isn’t visible during the scanning process, it will be automatically reconstructed. Therefore, try
placing the camera so that you can capture all of the essential parts of the object which are to be scanned and
displayed. Check to see if the object falls completely into the camera’s visibility zone – it must be fully visible on
your device’s screen.
Attention! If you have the build-in 3D camera, we recommend connecting the mouse to the notebook so you
can calibrate and control the scanning process more easily.
The optimal scanning distance depends on the type of camera used. It’s usually sufficient to select a distance at
which you can see the part of the object turned toward the camera. It should be evenly colored to show 3D
data. For F200 or SR300 Intel® RealSense™ camera, a recommended operating range would be from 20” (50
cm) MIN to 32” (80 cm) MAX. Try to place an object closer in this range in order to get higher detalization.
After you launch the calibration process, the program will try finding your turntable. You can adjust the scanning
area’s position by using the touchpad or the mouse cylinder. You can also change its diameter. To move it, use
the mouse cylinder and hold down the right mouse button or click the touchpad. The diameter can be changed
with the slider located at the bottom of the screen.
The accuracy of the table search depends on the amount of interference that the Intel® RealSense™ picks up. If
the picture is really distorted, try changing the scanning location as the lighting in the room is often the source
of such interference. Interference is manifested by frequent color changes on an object’s surface.
If the program doesn’t successfully detect the table, you can use the Manual mode to locate it. To do that, click
the Manual button, then mark the rectangle located within the table boundaries. You need to place the
rectangle on the left side of the turntable. Place the mouse cursor on the upper left corner of the imaginary
rectangle and drag it to the lower right corner; release and click Save.
The Reset button switches you back to automatic search mode.
3D SCANNING WORKFLOW
To get a 3D model, you need to follow the instructions of the built-in tutorial, do the calibration, and then slowly
rotate the object on the table. Don’t rush since this determines the texture quality.
The program itself counts a full rotation and starts the process of building a 3D model.
When the building process is completed, you can see the result in the 3D-view window.
Clicking the Wireframe button allows you to see a polygonal mesh model to assess its topology. The Light
button turns on additional lighting for the model.
By clicking the Measurement button you’ll see the overall dimensions of the model. Surface mode shows the
model without textures.
Don’t forget to click Save if you want to save the result. Local saving and opening are absolutely free regardless
of your subscription plan.
Reset view – reset your viewport to the original position.
EXPORT MODEL AND OPTIONS MENU
After the model is ready, you can export it to one of the popular formats and choose to attach a pedestal if
necessary.
OBJ/STL/WRL exporting is done through the cloud service so this function doesn’t work in offline mode. After a
model is exported, one unit from the total number of included models is deducted from your account. For each
scan we deduct only once.
Texture size – size of each texture file
Fit in texture size – resize the color data to fit all data into the one texture with specific size
You can rebuild a model with various parameters – just select the Options menu. Please note that most of the
time you don’t need to change the polycount of a 3D model – the program will select the necessary settings
itself. Only use this option if you’re sure you need more polygons.
Polycount – change the maximum budget for remeshing
Texture aligment – experimental parameter that can help to correct the texture seams
Texture denoising – experimental filter for the texture.
Baseplate – you can add pedestal for 3D printing or other needs.
Turntable cut – in this mode you can change the level of cut plane.
Rebuild – rebuild with new parameters
By default we select optimal parameters for convergence.
We recommend not changing the original settings for 3D model reconstruction if you’re not sure it’s necessary.
SOCIAL NETWORKS SHARING
You can export a 3D model to the Sketchfab service, upload its preview to Facebook and Twitter, or send it via
email.
HEAD SCAN (INTEL® REALSENSE™ R200 ONLY)
This mode is available only for devices with the Intel® RealSense™ R200 camera. It allows you to make a 3D
model of a person’s head. It’s very important that the person being scanned not move or change facial
expressions during this process; otherwise, the result will be blurry.
Situate the device so that the person’s head is in the green square. The program will determine the optimum
distance and launch the scanning process.
You need to circle the person clockwise while making sure that the person stays centered on the screen.
You’ll see blue arrows on the screen showing the necessary angle for shooting texture. You need to align your
arrow with the blue arrows and when your arrow disappears you can move to the next one.
It’s important that you shoot the face before the last arrow and make sure the person doesn’t blink!
As soon as all the arrows disappear, scanning is finished, and the 3D model construction will start.
