Life in the US
By: Paula Stoddard
Throughout this last
decade, women began to
experience true freedoms, equal
to men in the United States.
Before these years, women still
did not enjoy many of the same
freedoms and rights as men. In
some areas of the country,
women with college degrees
earned significantly less than
men with an eighth grade
education, and they were
restricted in terms of their
access to higher education.
In August 26, 1970 there
was a Women’s Strike for
Equality, which celebrated the
50th anniversary of the
ratification of the 19th
amendment, which legalized
the women’s right to vote. This
strike focused mostly on equal
opportunity in the workforce,
political rights for women, and
social equality in relationships
such as marriage. Although it

Nixon “Vietnamization” the war
By: Maria Juelle
RIchad Nixon, 1972
In
1960,
the
Republican Party (GOP)
chose Richard Nixon as
their nominee. The GOP
reflected Nixon’s desire for
a return to “Law and Order”
for the country, this mean
that he applied himself to
putting America’s foreign
policy in order. Nixon’s
announced policy, called
“Vietnamization”, was to
withdraw the 540,000 U.S.
troops in South Vietnam,
over an extended period.
Therefore,
the
South

money, weapons, training
and advice, would take over
the war.

Apollo 13-- Almost a Fatal Mission
By: Lissie RIvera
On April 11th, 1970, the third
mission to the moon was released.
At 1:13PM, the Apollo 13 mission
launches carrying astronauts James
Lovell, John Swigert and Fred
Haise, but it was three hours after
the launch that the mission finally
set on its course to the moon. This
was a huge success for American
pride. Sadly, on April 13th at about
10:07 pm the second oxygen tank
explodes. This event caused issues
with the other oxygen tanks of the
passengers. The crew contacts
CapCom shortly after the incident
and reports to him saying "Houston,
we've had a problem."
Apollo 13’s Launch
Apollo 13’s Launch as seen from backstage
Just
three hours later, all of the oxygen
stores were gone. The loss of water,
electricity and propulsion was quickly
worrying the tribulation on board. The
Houston crew refused to give up and began
to work on a plan for safe re-entry to their
home planet, Earth. This plan included
closing off the command module and
re-configuring the lunar module. For them to
be able to return safely they rationalized the
supplies and power. On April 14th, after
careful calculations they changed the course
of their trajectory and re-position the
spacecraft towards Earth. Finally, despite
shortage of water, power and oxygen, after
such a three suspenseful days on April 17th,
the crew of Apollo 13 successful splashdown
in the Pacific Ocean, near Samoa, all of its
crew was still alive.

Bootleg Mickey with Goofy and Pluto, 1970
By: Paula Stoddard
On Friday October 1, 1971, after
seven years of planning, about 10,000
visitors converged near Orlando, Florida to
witness the grand opening of Walt Disney
World. Planners and others estimated a
small crowd. This resort consisted of 2
property hotels, the 15-story Contemporary
Resort and the Polynesian Village Resort.
Many celebrities such as Bob
Hope, Julie Andrews, Rock Hudson,
Jonathan Winters, Annette Funicello
and Fred MacMurray arrived in
Orlando on that day to begin World
Disney World official opening
festivities. The official grand opening
celebrations of Disney's Contemporary
and Polynesian Village Resorts
happened on October 24. The Electrical
Water Pageant and Fantasy in the Sky
Spectacular also debuted that evening.
By October 25 the Admiral Joe Fowler
Riverboat, Peter Pan's Flight, and
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea had all
opened to guests as well. Last,
television cameras caught all the action
over these three days for an October 29
broadcast.
The Contemporary Resort featured a
monorail running directly through the
middle of the A-frame structure's 10-story
atrium. Many attractions such as Bear
Country, Fantasyland, Liberty Square and
Tomorrowland filled everyone with
happiness.

The Christmas Bombing

Right after the
breakdown of peace talks
with North Vietnam,
President Nixon
announces the beginning
of a bombing in North
America, which lasted for
nearly two weeks. On
December 13 in 1972
every peace talk collapsed
between the U.S and North
Vietnam. American B-52s
and fighter-bombers
dropped over 20,000 tons
of bombs on the cities of
Hanoi and Haiphong
beginning December 18.
The bombings continued
until North Vietnam agreed
to resume the talks in
December 29. Many days
later the Paris Peace
Treaty was signed and
the Vietnam War came to
a close, ending the U.S.
role in a conflict that
seriously damaged the
domestic Cold War
agreement among the
American public. The
impact of the so-called
“Christmas Bombings” on
the final agreement was
difficult to assess.
Nixon needed a
military solution to the
diplomatic roadblock o

power and to prove to
Thieu that the U.S. had

They destroyed rail
tracks and cars, some
three million gallons of
fuel, and airfields, and
they knocked out an

country's electric supply
capacity. More than
1,000 Vietnamese died,
but some claim the assault
may have helped
bring about the deal signed
a month later that led to an
end to US involvement in
the war.
Even though North
Vietnam did not consider
the Christmas Bombing a
defeat, it was an immoral
action the U.S took over
the people of North
Vietnam. Nixon
accomplished to return
North Vietnam to
negotiations. Although the
intentions were honest and
genuine, there would’ve
been other ways to end the
Vietnam war in a less
aggressive way. Many
innocent kids and families
died in the hands of the
unjustified Americans.
Even the chief U.S.
negotiator, Henry
Kissinger, was reported to
have said, “We bombed the
North Vietnamese into
accepting our
concessions.”
