VoiceThread
for Moodle

This document has been written for the instructors and teachers who will be using VoiceThread within Moodle 2.0+, and
it describes the many ways that VoiceThread can be used within the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS).
The Moodle Package is included with the District and Site licenses, and it can be purchased as an add-on to a K-12 School
or Higher-Ed Department License. Please contact [email protected] if you are unsure if your current license
qualifies.
To install and configure this package, please refer to the VoiceThread Moodle Configuration document for instructions.
There are five modules that work together to create a seamless VoiceThread experience.

Moodle Authentication

Opening VoiceThread in Moodle
To sign in to VoiceThread, locate the Go To VoiceThread box within your Moodle environment. If you don’t see this button, please contact
the person who administers the Moodle license for your institution.

If this is your first time clicking Go to VoiceThread, a new account will be created. You’ll sign into VoiceThread using this button each time
you use VoiceThread for Moodle.
In order to use previously created VoiceThreads in Moodle, you must be using your institution-assigned email address for that VoiceThread
account. If you are having trouble accessing your VoiceThreads, please contact VoiceThread Support for assistance.
Moodle Assignments
VoiceThread for Moodle also allows an instructor to assign VoiceThread creation or comments as gradable assignments.

Once saved, the assignment-submission page will display for students. This is where they can select a VoiceThread that they have created
to submit for the assignment.

Submitting a VoiceThread
To submit a VoiceThread, students will click the Edit my submission button to pull up a list of their VoiceThreads. One VoiceThread can be
selected as the submission for this assignment.

Once a VoiceThread is selected, students must click the Save changes button to submit the assignment. The submitted VoiceThread will be
displayed for the student, and the VoiceThread will immediately be available for grading by the instructor.

You will now see a menu to Add an activity... One of the selections in the menu is VoiceThread Commenting.

Enter number of comments: This is the number of comments each student should submit in order to complete the assignment.
Allow resubmitting: Selecting Yes will allow students to submit new comments after their initial comments have been submitted.
Email alerts to teachers: Selecting Yes will send an email alert when students have completed their assignment.
Submitting comments
Once these options are saved, students will see the activity in their course page. When they click on the activity title, they will see the
VoiceThread and the assigned number of comments for the activity. They can then record their assigned comments. If they haven’t made
any comments, or haven’t made enough comments, the assignment will inform them.

Once the student has made enough comments, they will click on the I have made x comments button. If they have made the required number of comments, they will then click Submit Assignment.

The student will then see a summary of the comments that will be submitted as part of this assignment, with the option to view the
comments in a separate window.

Once the student clicks Save changes, the submitted assignment will be available for grading.
Viewing and grading submitted comments
The instructor can can listen/view and grade the comments directly from the Moodle gradebook.

Moodle Embed
The Moodle Embed module allows for simple embedding of VoiceThreads on Moodle pages and other Moodle text fields. When a new
page resource is created within Moodle, a text content box appears.

To embed a thread, simply enter the shortcode for that VoiceThread. You will need to know its number to embed. Thread numbers are easy
to find from the standard VoiceThread Share page (VoiceThread number highlighted in red).

Moodle Roster Synchronization
K_\Dff[c\Ifjk\iJpeZ_ife`qXk`fedf[lc\XlkfdXkically creates a VoiceThread Group for each course within Moodle. Each Group will
include the members (students and instructor) listed for the course so that VoiceThread content can be easily shared with the members
f]k_XkZflij\%Jg\Z`ÓZZfeÓ^liXk`fefgk`fej]fik_\Dff[c\Ifjk\iJpeZ_ife`qXk`fedf[lc\Xi\[\jZi`Y\[`ek_\VoiceThread Moodle
Configuration document.
