Italian Renaissance painter, sculpture, architect, poet, etc.
Similar to Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo was a “True
Renaissance Man” and made notable accomplishments in a
variety of areas, both in art and in science.
One of Michelangelo’s most famous sculptural works is the
marble statue of David.

The Creation of Adam 1512
A single panel to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The fresco is the fourth one in a series portraying the stories told
in the book of Genesis, where God breathes life into Adam.
The image of God reaching for the hand of Adam has become an
icon representing humanity.
The figures surround the image of God have many speculations
as to their meaning/representation. Some believe that the figure
under God’s arm may represent either Eve or the Virgin Mary,
based on the more female characteristics of the face.
The Creation of Adam, along with Da Vinci’s Last Supper, have
become the most replicated religeous paintings of all time.

Renaissance Art: The further that art began to grow during the renaissance era,
the more secular the art became. It began to focus less on religious themes and
more on individuals. This came as a result of capitalism. Individual patrons would
commission artists to create works of art, not for a church, but for their homes.
Humanism: an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human
rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential
value and goodness of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek
solely rational ways of solving human problems.
