There was never a doubt for Todd & Chris that their children would attend SHG. Todd cited the discipline, the focus on doing things the right and honorable way as some of the most notable benefits of attending SHG. He also feels that alumni of SHG who come back to live and work in Springfield have an established network of friends and family. After much discussion and prayer, the SHG Administration and Board decided to move forward. A native of Monmouth, Illinois, Green was born and raised Catholic and attended Immaculate Conception School. He attended the University of Arkansas and walked on to the football team Lou Holtz’s first year of coaching at the University. Green learned an enormous amount from Holtz about football and about life. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 In 1983, Green moved to Springfield after purchasing a Toyota dealership. Todd is proud to call Springfield home, believes in the people and is invested in the community. He knows how important long-term relationships can be and is committed to treating his clients and friends right and doing what he says he’ll do. Green had a vision five years ago when he put his plan in place for Cyclone Stadium. He imagined a complex that was something impressive and pleasing to fans and guests alike. Like any structure, there are repairs and adjustments to be made. Todd is often seen walking around West Campus making mental notes about any repairs that may need to be made or anticipating upkeep that may need to happen in the near future. Almost as critical as the upkeep of the facility itself to Todd, are the aesthetics – the beautiful trees and landscape that are getting more and more beautiful each season. There are many times when Todd will have repairs or enhancements made to the Stadium and SHG will never see the bill. He says he feels fortunate to be able to do this and receives a tremendous amount of enjoyment from it. As fans enter the Stadium and walk along the beautiful tree-lined brick walkway, they will see the thousands of names inscribed on the bricks of those who contributed to the renovations of the facilities and of the construction of the Stadium. Corporate signs line both fences as fans enter the Stadium, and plaques are visible on almost every structure, naming donors responsible for this major undertaking that will be long remembered as a momentous time in the history of Sacred Heart-Griffin. Large donor walls have been hung in the foyers of West Campus and Dominican Hall recognizing those who stood behind this effort. A smaller, but equally stunning brick walkway leads the way into Dominican Hall. Todd Green, pictured in Cyclone The fall edition of Visions is the time when we formally recognize our many benefactors that have supported SHG throughout the year. MEMBER BOARD Fall 2015 Sister Rebecca Ann Gemma, O.P. Board Chair Sister Barbara Blesse, O.P. Sister Kathlyn Mulcahy, O.P. Sister Kathleen Gallagher, O.P. Sister Kathleen Cour, O.P. ‘66 Dear Friends, 2014-2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS The theme of our 2014 Homecoming was Candy-Land Fun. Traditionally, the festivities of Spirit Week begin on Sunday with the “Powderpuff ” football game when the junior girls take on the senior girls on the stadium turf for this fun experience that has long been a tradition at SHG. The camaraderie among the girls and their coaches, the boys from each respective class, is awesome to witness. Monday the school week begins with a prayer service that is planned and lead by Student Council and the O.P. Teens. All of the activities throughout the week generate the spirit for the game on Friday night and the dance on Saturday. An added attraction last year was the Adult Homecoming celebration at West Campus after the game. It was a grand celebration with over 400 people attending, renewing friendships, sharing memories and catching up. The Alumni Committee planned this spirit-filled celebration. They also sponsored the Trivia Night held in February which brought many hundreds of alums, past and present parents and friends of SHG to West Campus for a fun evening of testing their memory skills along with enjoying fellowship with SHG supporters. A new event which the Alumni Committee planned was the Spirit Sunday Walk/Run at the SHG stadium in the spring. In spite of the rain, hundreds of SHG supporters showed up and walked thousands of laps to earn scholarship dollars for SHG students. The enthusiasm of the alumni to continue to support Academic Excellence in a Community of Faith is important to making us SHG. *Tom Bayer Board Chair Emily Becker ‘04 Sister Mary Dominica Brennan, O.P. ‘55, RIP Kevin Burke ‘89 Lisa Coakley Lynn Connelly Mylas Copeland Sister Philip Neri Crawford, O.P. *Anne Dondanville *Jim Donelan *Jeff Enlow ‘86 *Jim Hillestad Sister Judith Hilbing, O.P. ‘59 Jennifer Ludwig President Sr. Katherine O’Connor, O.P. *Jeff Raes Conrad Rubinkowski Honorable Jeanne Scott, ‘66 *Julie Tarter *Jeff Tatarek ‘82 EXECUTIVE TEAM How often we hear, “You have to experience it to believe it.” Nothing could be truer about the culture of SHG! As I reflect on the 2014-2015 school year, which seemed to fly by, there are so many examples of the spirit that makes up the SHG community. With it being Homecoming week as I am writing this letter, my thoughts go back to last year’s Homecoming week which set the stage for another successful school year. I am proud to highlight just a few accomplishments that made the year memorable...I couldn’t possibly name them all! Three of our teams went to state: girls’ golf, football and softball. We are very proud of our teams and individual athletes who make it to state level competition. However, our Community of Faith is most obvious in the recognition that two of our teams received in the IHSA Do What’s Right State Final Sportsmanship Award. Notice that state recognition is not only limited to our sports teams. All State Band was awarded to two of our SHG students and nine received All-State Musicians’ Award along with one “Best of the Day” rating. The Science Olympiad and Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) teams qualified for state competition. Our 2014-2015 SHG Yearbook staff was inducted into Walsworth Publishing’s “Gallery of Excellence,” which means that last year’s yearbook was deemed one of the company’s best and will be used across the country as an example of “what to do” in a yearbook. You are an integral part of all that happens at Sacred Heart-Griffin. The financial and spiritual support you give to Sacred Heart-Griffin enables us to be SHG! Whether you are an alumnus, past or present parent, grandparent, faculty/staff, or friend of SHG, you help us to live our mission. Each year hundreds of Springfield area teenagers participate in a rigorous academic Gospel-based secondary education because of your generosity. President 2014-2015 Annual Fund Dear Alumni, Parents, Past Parents, Grandparents, Faculty, Staff and Friends of SHG, Thank you for supporting the 2014-2015 SHG Annual Fund. It is with much gratitude that we recognize the many individuals and businesses that are listed in the following pages. Together, over $270,000 was raised for the annual operating budget for Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. Please know that each and every student at SHG benefits from your generosity. Great care has been taken in preparing this listing of donors to ensure its accuracy. If we have omitted your name, misspelled it, or failed to place it in the correct category, we apologize and ask that you bring it to our attention. Our recognition of donors includes those who made a contribution to the SHG Annual Fund from July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015 and are listed by giving level. The 2015-2016 Annual Fund year is currently underway, and we hope we can count on your continued support! Sincerely, Jennifer Bettis, CFRE, Director of Advancement Visionary Robert F. SHG Internship Program The SHG Internship Program, established in 2007, is a tuition assistance program offered to SHG juniors and seniors. This program, administered by SHG, places qualified students in partnering businesses in the community. The student interns are introduced to a wide range of work experiences and skills necessary in the professional world. Classroom work and business experience earn the students 0.5 business elective credit. After the students have fulfilled all the requirements of the program, the partnering business submits a check in the amount of $3,000, payable to SHG, which is credited to the student intern’s tuition account. SHG provides the student interns with W-2 forms and pays for worker’s compensation insurance. Thank you to all of our contributors to the 2014-2015 Annual Fund last year! Very soon we will be sending our Fall Annual Fund mailing for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Please consider giving a gift this year – no gift is too small and each and every gift goes to work immediately to fund teachers’ salaries, technology, facilities, and so much more. Tuition would be a considerable amount higher per student if it weren’t for our generous supporters.
