The LAF supports cancer research and survivorship
programs. What are survivorship programs? These
are the research and support programs offered to the
millions of people now living with the devastating
effects of cancer and cancer treatment, as well as the
family members they may have left behind, after the
medical community has completed their part. Coming
through cancer and its treatment teaches every
survivor about courage. Pain ceases to be an obstacle
in everyday life. Each moment is a moment to relish.

HBC Group Riding Tip of the Month
by Mark Riordan
Use caution when standing. When you stand to accelerate or climb, the bike tends to hesitate. A rider behind you
will not expect this and may touch your wheel and fall. Practice getting out of the saddle as one leg starts a down
stroke and the bike is much less likely to hesitate and cause problems for riders behind you.
When you join an HBC ride, you accept the announced classification – a rider does not consciously upgrade or
downgrade the ride. Remember that the ride leader also has a responsibility as well.

Join us for this annual bakery-to-bakery ride. The first
stop is at the Pennsylvania Bakery. Then we ride to
New Cumberland to visit the Dingledein Bakery. Those
who are looking for more "bakery time" and less riding
can take a longer break at the Dingledein while the rest
of the group gets in about 5 extra miles. Our goal is to
burn more calories than we consume. This is a great
ride for D riders who want to step up to a longer
distance.

Camp Hill Borough Building, 2145 Walnut Street
Length: 8-10 miles at an easy pace.
Leader: Marilyn Chastek
The skills and concepts that will allow you to confidently
and safely bicycle on the roads will be presented in a
course given by John Donoughe & Tom Helm. The
three-day course will give the novice cyclist a lot of
valuable skills that would take years of experience on
the road to accumulate. Call John at (717) 774-5073 to
initiate the process of registration or ask questions.
The Harrisburg Bicycle Club is sponsoring its second
annual Ride of Silence.
On the third Wednesday of May, at 7 PM local around
the world, cyclists will take to the roads in a silent
protest of the carnage taking place on the streets.
When:
The three sessions of the course are:
Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in
Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz
was killed by a passing bus mirror on an empty road.
Friday, May 11, 6:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.,
The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists
to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during
the ride.
Sunday, May 13, 1:00 P.M - 5:00 P.M.
Saturday, May 12, 1:00 P.M - 5:00 P.M., and
Where:
1554 Locust Street, New Cumberland
PA 17070-1550 (John's house)
The ride hopes to raise cycling awareness during bike
safety month to motorists, police, and city officials. The
ride is also a chance to mourn, in funeral procession
style, those who have already been killed.
Cost:
$50.00 (course materials and instructor fees)
The ride also requests black arm bands be worn, red if
you have had a bike/motor vehicle accident.

Help Promote HBC at the Tour de Belt
Deadline:
Friday, May 4, 2007
The Tour de Belt is the Capital Area Greenbelt’s annual
fundraising ride. The route encompasses the whole 20
mile greenbelt that winds throughout the Harrisburg
Area. It attracts a lot of new riders and we would like
them to know about HBC. CAGA has invited HBC to
set up our tent at their event, which is on June 3 this
year. I would like 1 or 2 volunteers to man the tent and
give out HBC literature. There would be 2 shifts: One
before the ride from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and one
as the ride ends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please
give Marilyn Chastek a call at 761-3189 if you are
willing to take a shift. If you are riding in the Tour de
Belt, I would also like to encourage you to wear your
HBC jersey or shirt to help lend some visibility to HBC.
COVERED BRIDGE / COUNTRY STORE RIDE
Sunday, May 27, 2007, 10:00 AM
Join Keith Spangler on the Class "C" (rolling / flat)
Covered Bridge / Country Store Ride. The 45-mile ride
will start at the commuter parking lot at Exit 37
(Newville), on Interstate 81 at 10:00 a.m. Riders
should bring plenty of drink and snacks because "snack
stops" are extremely limited. Also, there are no
restrooms at the starting point so come prepared.
(There is a rest stop on Interstate 81 prior to Exit 37.)
The terrain for this ride is rolling to flat, with one or two
small hills. Cue sheets will be available at the start
location. For more information call: Keith Spangler 795-8563.

PLAN AHEAD FOR CAPE MAY!!
September 25 - 30, 2007
LITITZ FALL TOUR WARM-UP RIDE # 1
Saturday, August 25th - 8:00 am
It’s never too early to plan ahead for HBC’s annual Fall
Tour to Cape May! The 2007 Fall Tour will once again
offer beautiful cycling for those who choose to cycle to
Cape May, or just a great time at the shore for the
many “weekenders” who join the group.
This year we have (3) different ways to enjoy Fall Tour:
The three-day tour will begin on Wednesday,
September 26, cycling a 90-mile 1st day to Newark.
The four-day tour offers two options, both beginning on
Tuesday, September 25:
Option A: Riders will gather in Elizabethtown and spend
Tuesday night in Strasburg.
Option B (New!): Riders will gather in Dillsburg and
spend Tuesday night at Willow Valley Inn.
(Look for details of this new option below)
All groups will finish the tour on Friday, September 28,
at the Grand Hotel in Cape May. The Grand is just a
few steps across the boardwalk from the beach, a
perfect place if you’d like to come down for the weekend.
So mark your calendars, request your vacation time,
and start looking forward to great cycling, kites flying,
and friends gathering on the beach at Cape May.
Watch for further details and registration form in the
June issue of the Spokesman. Questions? Call Marilyn
Chastek at 761-3189 or Ed Rockland at 838-3020.
Karn’s Market Parking Lot, Hershey
60.5 Miles, Tour Pace(s), Leader: Michael Floyd 533-4195
Michael promises to lead a pretty ride to Lititz that will
meet the needs of all riders. You won’t want to miss
this ride! No one will be dropped and various paces will
be available. Maps and cue sheets will be provided.
Bring $$ for a lunch stop in Lititz. The Subway is just
up the street from the Wilbur’s Chocolate factory. You
can get some sweet deserts there too. Stay around
after the ride returns to Hershey for a suggested visit to
the ice cream stand just across the street from Karn’s.
DOVER PANCAKE FALL TOUR WARM-UP # 2
Saturday, September 8th - 8:00 am
Boiling Springs Rd. - Rt.174 (Joe Carr Field)
60 miles, Tour pace(s), Leader: Cindy Gorski 960-9010
This is a good ride to get you prepared for fall touring.
Cue sheets will be provided. The route contains some
good "practice hills" as well as gentle terrain and
beautiful scenery. We will be leaving from the
Churchtown area and heading for the Rt. 74 Restaurant
in Dover to partake of the best pancakes around (or
whatever else you would like). There are no formal
rest stops along the way so bring plenty of water
and snacks. The restaurant takes cash only, the
prices are minimal.
GETTYSBURG FALL TOUR WARM-UP RIDE # 3
Saturday, September 22nd - 8:00 am
NEW: FALL TOUR 4-DAY OPTION B!
Pinchot State Park, 68 Miles, Tour Pace(s)
Leader: John Donoughe (H: 774-5073 W: 787-6136)
Join John on one of the favorite rides of the HBC. The
‘Ride To Gettysburg Square’ will get us to the Pub and
Restaurant in time for lunch. But, after lunch has had
time to settle save room for desert at the Distelfink on
the way home. The terrain will include rolling hills.
If you’re thinking of cycling to Cape May this year and
looking for something new and different, consider this
option. On Tuesday, September 25, riders will gather
in Dillsburg. The route travels on the west side of the
Susquehanna to Wrightsville where it crosses the river
on the beautiful old Lincoln Highway Bridge. The route
then goes to Willow Street (actually not a street, but a
town) where the group will spend Tuesday night at the
Willow Valley Inn. On Wednesday the route continues
on to Newark, joining the main tour route near
Strasburg. Mileage for the first two days will be
approximately 62 and 51, with moderately hilly terrain.
Dave and Jan Powell will be coordinating this option. If
you have questions, call them at 796-0689. Watch for
further details in the June issue of the Spokesman.

2007 KASEL XIX and MOATS X Rides
When?
Where?
Distance?
Cost?
June 8-10, 2007
Hershey-Kutztown-Strasburg-Hershey (PA)
KASEL (68, 62, and 45 miles respectively) MOATS (62 and 45 miles respectively)
(KASEL - $115.00) (MOATS – $80.00)
The 2007 KASEL (Kutztown-And-Strasburg-Eastern-Loop) will cover a very beautiful route in the area east of
Harrisburg, PA. The ride will start and end at the Sand Hill Lions Club in Hershey. The 69-mile ride Friday to our first
night destination of Kutztown University finds us riding the rolling terrain of Dauphin, Lebanon, and Berks counties.
Highlights for this day are Roadside America, a great lunch at the Hagg’s Hotel with its Mennonite cooking, and a photo
and rest stop in front of the picturesque and unique Virginville Hotel.
Our second day’s ride of 62 miles takes us to Strasburg PA through some slightly hillier terrain. This day rivals
the first day for beautiful scenery such as a very enjoyable ride along a stream with quaint houses and a gentle downhill
that goes for several miles. You can also visit the Daniel Boone Homestead. This is a great place for rest and water.
There might even be a Boy and Girl Scout Camporee at the homestead for your viewing pleasure. As we progress into
Lancaster County, we will see the interesting Amish character of this area. You can enjoy a snack or ice cream at the
Maple Grove Campground. However, your more serious hunger should be saved for the great food available for lunch
at Yoder’s Restaurant and Farm Market in New Holland. The Dutch Treat Motel in Strasburg is our end destination this
day. Dinner at Hershey Farms Restaurant will leave no one hungry, except if you want the best ice cream around.
That can be had at the Country Store and Creamery on the square in Strasburg.
Not to be forgotten are the MOATS (Meet-Others-At-Tranquil-Strasburg). This ride will start in Hershey on
Saturday and attempt to join up with the KASEL riders at either Yoder’s or Strausburg on a 60-62 mile route. This
variation is designed for those people who can’t conveniently go biking on a Friday.
On the final day of the ride, Sunday, the KASEL’s and MOATS’ will bike 45 miles back to the starting point in
Hershey. Even though this last day of the ride is a little shorter, your appetite will be well prepared for the end-of-ride
picnic with all the fixings. If you cannot join us on either the KASEL or the MOATS, there is flexibility to permit riders to
do part of the KASEL to accommodate their individual schedule, just ask and we’ll find some way of making
arrangements. If you have any questions, call John Donoughe at (717) 774-5073 (H) or (717) 787-6136 (W), or E-mail
to [email protected]. This is one KASEL or MOATS ride you will not soon forget!
Both rides will enjoy overnight accommodations Saturday, tour maps and cue sheets, and the end-of-ride picnic.
Then, those riders doing the full KASEL will get two additional meals and one extra night’s lodging for Friday as well as
expanded maps and cue sheets. Everyone will provide for their own en-route food. In past years, this ride was unsagged, but this year there will be a provision for transporting overnight gear for those wishing to do so. You must
make your own travel arrangements to and from the start/end point. Parking will be provided there, but it will be at your
own risk. Just fill out the Registration Form and mail it with a check for the correct amount, payable to KASELHarrisburg Bicycle Club and send it to address on the form. Your participation will be confirmed and any necessary
instructions will be mailed to you. The registration deadline date is May 12. If YOU should cancel prior to May 11, a
$5.00 fee will be deducted from your refund. Refunds for cancellations after May 11 will be subject to the registration of
a replacement rider.

Skyline Drive Bicycle Ride
rd
th
August 3 - 5 , 2007
Destination: Skyline Drive, Front Royal, Virginia
Date: August 3rd – August 5th , 2007 (Friday through Sunday)
Cycling Distance: 50 + miles Saturday; 50 + miles Sunday (Friday evening is driving to Virginia)
Cost: $110 per person, double occupancy
Includes 2 nights lodging, hospitality food Saturday afternoon,
snacks/water along route,
and picnic lunch along route on Sunday
Registration Deadline: ASAP !!!!!!! Only 10 rooms available !!!!!!
The first 20 checks received will be going on the 2007 Skyline Drive Bicycle Ride!
Skyline Drive is a beautiful and challenging ride. There are about 35 miles of long climbs Saturday and roughly 15
miles of downhill. This works in reverse on Sunday. You can’t get lost on the route; there is only one road Skyline
Drive. We calculated the vertical feet you climb in both days, but you don’t want to know. You need to be well
trained for long, steady climbing and have a mechanically sound bike.
We will caravan on Friday evening after work heading south on I-81 to Front Royal, Virginia. You may also elect to
drive down on your own and meet us in Front Royal Friday evening. Staying overnight in Front Royal gives us a
chance to get some rest Friday night before heading to Skyline Drive Saturday morning. We’ll be staying at the
Bluemont Inn. Saturday breakfast will be at Jim Bo’s. After checking, out we will head to Skyline Drive, pay the
entrance fee, and pedal to milepost 51 – Big Meadows Lodge in Shenandoah National Park.
Amy Addams will again be providing sag. She is also looking for a second driver to help sag. The ride is in the
national park and there is plenty of wildlife. Last year one rider hit a bear on the return ride Sunday afternoon.
Thankfully she was OK ... the bear decided not to press charges!! Seriously, the animals literally have the right
away. So, watch out!
You will be responsible for all of your meals and admission to the park. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will
be at Big Meadows Lodge. You can stop for lunch Saturday at Elkwallow enroute to Big Meadows. Although we
will be providing sag support, be smart and bring snacks for yourself in case you need to eat while riding. Amy will
have a hospitality hour in the Addams’ room before dinner Saturday evening complete with appetizers. Lunch on
Sunday will be provided by Amy and will be at the top of the last major climb. Bob Addams will be on hand to offer
emergency repairs. Bob will be riding so please make sure your bike is in good working order before the trip.
Care not to ride? Spouses, significant others, friends, etc. are more than welcome to come along and drive the
route to catch the views. There are numerous hiking trails. Dark Hollow Falls near the Big Meadows Lodge
features spectacular waterfalls (when there’s not a drought).
Questions? Call Bob Addams at 717-361-8100 (Bicycle & Fitness Outfitters), 717-361-7995 (cell) or
[email protected]
To register, complete the form below, make checks payable for $110 per person to Bob Addams and mail ASAP to:

slow easy pace on hills, distances generally 20-25 miles.

good physical condition and capable of maintaining a
steady pace. Few stops if any.

are expected to stay with group. Expect to maintain a
fast pace for distances up to 50 miles.

Pennsylvania Bakery. Then we ride to New Cumberland to visit the
Dingledein Bakery. Those who are looking for more "bakery time"
and less riding can take a longer break at the Dingledein while the
rest of the group gets in about 5 extra miles. Our goal is to burn
more calories than we consume. This is a great ride for D riders
who want to step up to a longer distance.

passed it by Rt 934. We then headed up to Fishing Creek
Valley Road, fighting the head wind all the way back to
Manada Bottom, then to Moyer then Piketown, back to
Kellytron. We were all a little tired given the head wind,
but we enjoyed getting out on the road after being inside
all these weeks

East Shore - Kellytron,
Leader: Larry Wasser
Riders: Brian, Jim, Michael, Steve
Distance: 33 miles, Speed: 16.5 mph
It was a little cold to start out, around 35 degrees, but it
was a nice change with little wind, and getting sunny. We
headed to all the rollers down through Hummelstown, then
to Middletown, toward the river. We then headed east on
Geyers Church Rd., up to Colebrook, then back to
Swatara Creek Rd, then headed north through
Hummelstown, then Red Top, and back to Kellytron. The
pace was slow due to all the small hill climbs, but a great
training ride.

Mechanicsburg 'C' 25.0 miles / 11.2 mph
John Donoughe (L), Dave Young (S), Steve Buss (*).
At 50 degrees, it was a somewhat warm day for the
middle of March, but true to form this time of the year the
winds were formidable at 15-20 mph. This was Steve's
first group ride with the club and his first ride on the West
Shore. We went out against the wind and rode by the
buffalo farm, made a big loop into Boiling Springs, went by
the 'Boiling Spring' and Children's lake, and included a
ride along the 'Poop Loop' to complete the scenic agenda.
25 miles today was enough in the wind especially since
the majority of the riders didn't have too many miles in for
the year.
Saturday, March 24
Mechanicsburg C Ride 17.5 miles 12.5 mph
Marilyn Chastek-L, Richard Green, Sharon Brumbaugh
The weather forecast was for rain, but it wasn’t raining at
1:00 p.m. so, being optimists, we headed out to do loops
so we could return quickly in case our optimism wasn’t
justified. We rode for about 12 miles before the rain made
us turn back for the high school, but we didn’t have any
regrets about getting these miles in on a spring day.

What a great day for a ride. We had a nice turnout of
riders including four new riders who were new riders to
our area. We started out heading out Eppley Rd, then
turned east and headed to the developments along Rt 15.
Then South through the developments and out past
Ashcombes, past Williams Grove to Creek Rd and on to
Boiling Springs for a rest stop. We then took the long way
back to the school via Springville Rd, Shugart Rd, S
Middlesex Rd, Ridge Dr, Biddle Rd, Kost Rd, Locust Pt
Rd, etc. We even got a chance to show the new riders the
Buffalo Farm along State Rd. Everyone had a great
afternoon of riding, and we got to welcomed four new
riders to our club and area.

Carlisle Commons, 5:30pm
Distance: 25 miles, Pace: 17 mph
Leader: Al Padilla/Keith Wickard
Riders: Jen & Judd Kulas, Jerid Ahrens, Barry Tesman,
Don Nichter, Brian Stephenson, Kevin Mullen, John
Lippert, Peter Gilbert, Graham ? and about 10 others
Description: Severe isolated thunderstorms were forecast
and ugly clouds loomed on North Mountain, but it was
sunny and warm in the parking lot. Keith got a last minute
flat tire - Kevin assisted him, and it gave us 15 minutes to
decide which way to go to avoid the isolated showers. We
decided to pedal away from the clouds and went out
through Carlisle out Spring Garden St., Bonny Brook,
York, Mt. Zion to Mt. Holly Springs, Pine St., Mountain
View, Pine to the Kings Gap Store where we split. Even a
gaggle of geese and tundra swans made a U-turn over us
20
with the bolts of lightening in the not too far distance
forbade a drenching and 1/2 of us went home and the
other 1/2 led by the Kulas's went up Kings Gap about
6:45pm. My group just got to Carlisle Commons just as
the first few drops fell. No word on the other group as they
were on their own ride and presumably they got a little
wet.

Two weekends in a row, I had great days to lead a HBC
ride from Mechanicsburg. Again this week, I had one of
the new riders from the week before. So to showcase
some of the many possible routes to the new rider, we
headed out going north warming up by going through the
developments around the M-HS and along State Rd. We
followed one of the normal heavily traveled bicycle routes
out to Old Stonehouse Rd, which we followed to
Middlesex Rd and onto Claremont Rd. We went past the
Carlisle Heritage Museum on our way to Fairview St and
onto Petersburg Rd. We turned at Lindsey Rd back to
Forge Rd, and then into Boiling Springs for the mandatory
rest stop. We then headed out the Southern end of Boiling
Springs past the lake to Leidigh Dr. At this point, Lois’s
legs gave out after having been on Petersburg Rd and
Lindsey Rd, so she decided to go back to Boiling Springs
and watch all the fishermen who were out along the lake
for the first day of trout season. The rest of us proceeded
out along the Yellow Breeches following Criswell Dr and
Creek Rd. to see the people out for trout season. Most of
the people we ask as we past by said the fishing was not
good, but they were still at it at 3PM. The last few miles
back to M-HS were via Heisey, Baish, S Locust Pt, and
Eppley Rds. After the ride, I drove to Boiling Springs to
pick up Lois, who had a nice time along the lake. She
even rode a little around town since her legs came back to
life after a little rest. It was a great afternoon for the bikes!
Icicle Metric Century - March 31
Keith Spangler
The Icicle Metric Century held in Newark, Delaware, was
a good test of the legs - just as advertised. The ride
heads of out of town on West Main Street which sets the
mood and pace for the day. Snaking into rural
Pennsylvania and Maryland the ride covers some really
calm and pretty countryside. Farmland, miles of ice cold
creeks and beautiful hillside villas view the vista as you
"roll" along. The ride offers 16K, 32K and 100K options
with the 100 offering the bulk of the leg challenge. The
100K hosts two rest stops which I recommend you take;
especially the second one. The rollers really start after
that point and your quads will be much happier with a
good stock of food and fluids. For information see their
website:
