Just Wondering
When it rains it pours - and I’m not talking about the
weather! Last week as a family we celebrated the First
Communion of my niece just weeks after her sister’s
Confirmation. Again it was a lovely occasion and my niece
looked beautiful all dressed up in her white dress. I
concelebrated at the First Communion Mass and even gave
her, her First Holy Communion. A first for me too.
Although it is perfectly normal for my nieces and nephew to
have an uncle who is a priest it is certainly not usual
anymore. Gone are the days when most children had an
uncle a priest or an aunt a nun, gone too is the era when
every family had a connection with someone ‘on the
missions’. I imagine that less and less people actually know
priests now never mind have a relative who is one.
As I was driving home last week I wondered what it is like
for my nieces and nephew to have an uncle who is a priest.
In our age when the Church is so often portrayed as a dying
if not an evil institution desperately trying to cling on to its
former prestige and power and when the word priest is
almost synonymous with the other ‘p’ word do they worry
about their uncle? I wondered how they feel when they see
sensational headlines in the papers or overhear tragic stories
on the radio, I wondered have they or will they as they grow
older find themselves trying to defend the indefensible?
They say that ‘all politics is local’. All church is local. Our
experience of church is first and foremost in our local faith
community. It’s the weekly Sunday gatherings, it’s the
happy and sad family occasions, it’s the sense of belonging,
it’s the experience of support, it’s ‘our’ priest, it’s the
awareness of God in the messiness of the ordinary. Our
experience of Church is all we know.
It’s the same for my nieces and nephew–for them me being
a priest is not as important as being an uncle. I am their
uncle who happens to be a priest. Yes they are proud that I
am a priest but they know me and love me first of all as
Uncle Tod and that’s what’s important to them.
God Bless, Fr Tod
