Keeping the Fun Going This Summer at Valencia
By Cassandra Leopold
Summer at Valencia Lakes heated up fast and the events were just as hot. July started off with a bang as
this year’s 4th of July Celebration brought over 400 residents to the Clubhouse for a fun day of games and
great food. Thank you to the Valencia Singers for putting on another amazing patriotic performance. There
wasn’t a seat left in the house! Also in July we had the dance floor down as the residents boogied to their
favorite 60s and 70s music numbers during Disco Night. We also
kicked off the annual signature program Aquapoolooza in July
with Bobby Summers, a crowd favorite. The Bistro area received
some attention during the Mixed-Up Mondays, Wine Down
Wednesdays and Frozen Fridays. The residents brought their
favorite drinks and shared them (some of you) with each other.
August featured movie nights, gift card bingo and the hilarious
Judy B Goode. She had the residents laughing and dancing
while she dressed as multiple characters and celebrities. The hot
winner for gift card bingo was Lee Woodman with a grand prize
of $425 in gift cards. This was our largest payout ever and the
biggest turnout. The more that play, the more it pays!
The events continued to sizzle in September as we sold out of
our Labor Day concert and enjoyed a fun day of pool games and
a BBQ from our bistro. Residents battled it out in the watermelon eating
tii
competition, the wet t-shirt relay and the rubber ducky derby. Rodney Davis
thought he would get his duck to the other end first and he did with the help
of a fishing line. Kathy Sarno ended up being the real winner for this event.
Congratulations to the other competition winners, Alan Bearman for eating 32
slices of watermelon in two minutes and to the Messerschmitt family who dominated

SOFTBALL’S NEW HOME
By Andy Pfeiffer
Residents of Valencia Lakes Wimauma, Florida, are enjoying
several new amenities, among them a first-class softball complex.
The new ballpark opened to residents on Memorial Day 2013 as
part of a special dedication program, equipped with a concession
area, restrooms, covered bleachers and dugouts. The residents of
Valencia Lakes formed a 55+ softball team about four years ago
and until now have been traveling and playing other teams in the
vicinity. With the new field we now play scheduled games at home.
Additionally, there is a group of
residents that play weekly, part
of an effort to develop a league
where both residents and guests
alike can enjoy an organized
social game of softball on a field
that can only be described as
major league. With the opening
of this facility by GL Homes, it
puts new meaning to the phrase,
“if you build it they will come.”

The Woodworkers of Valencia Lakes are happy to announce
that they have converted from an interest group to a club, with
56 members. No tools are needed — just basic skills. The member
experts/professionals are happy to guide and assist you. We have
several projects in the works, including the Lifestyle Event Center
next to the soda machine. This area will be transformed into
a much more organized and useful space. Magazine rack-type
holders will be installed, the food drop box will be on rollers and
two wooden slotted boxes will be added to accept payments,
sign-up sheets and phones for soldiers. Other projects include
furniture repair, community projects, toys, orchid boxes, domino
holders, pepper mills, etc. Items will be for sale at the Oct. 5th arts
and crafts festival here inside the clubhouse. The club solicits your
support on our proposal to GL Homes to someday have a wood
shop in an area shared with other common clubs.
TABLE TENNIS ANYONE?
Rodney Davis
Old fashioned Ping Pong or modern day Table Tennis is what
you have here with the Valencia Lakes Ping Pong Club. We have
had several socials as well as organized tournaments in the
spring and fall, both singles and doubles. The next scheduled
tournament is in October (date tba). We have invited the top
five players from Sun City Center to play Valencia Lakes top five
players here. Several articles have been written on the health
benefits of this sport. Google ping pong for health! The skill levels
are multiple so you can play at any level you wish. Fun! Fun! Fun!
Please contact Vincent Genovese for further information.

A FRESH SUMMER
By Janet Corin
This summer, the garden club welcomed Hydro Harvest Farms
of Ruskin for a discussion about hydroponics. The “farmers” began
planting for the first time at the end of May. All summer they watched,
weeded, and waited for vegetables, herbs, and flowers to arrive,
learning quickly which plants could not tolerate the heat or the
extensive rains and which ones thrived. Weeding, too, they discovered
was an ongoing endeavor. The flowers and herbs were great; most of the
veggies were not. In June Rick from Apollo Beach Florist demonstrated
flower arranging from locally grown flowers. In July, Tom from
Sweetbay Nursery in Parrish presented a large variety of indigenous
plants that grow well in our environment. Early in September Tampa
Urban Farmers of Riverview demonstrated square foot gardening,
enabling small spaces to grow a large variety of vegetables and herbs.
VALENCIA LAKES WOMEN’S CLUB
By Patty Hibsher
The VL Women’s Club hosted two outings this summer. In August
we spent a lovely day on Anna Maria Island lunching, shopping
and relaxing on the beach. In September we hosted a tour of Keel
and Curry Winery. Now it’s down to business. In October we are
hosting a Tea Party to raise funds for next year’s scholarships. In
November we have our annual Dance for the Cure on 11/1 and
the Walk for the Cure on 11/2. Funds raised are donated to Moffitt
Cancer Research Center. Once again, we hope to raise $10,000.00.
With help and support from our community we can make it happen.
ITALIAN – AMERICAN CLUB
OF VALENCIA LAKES
The “Italian Heritage Award” was bestowed upon Fulvia Fiorani
for her active contribution to share the Italian culture and advance
the image of Italy in her presentation to Valencia Lakes residents
on July 22, 2013 on the subject: From Galileo to Enrico Fermi—
an overview of great scientific contributions by noted Italian
astronomers and physicists.
Club president Vincent Genovese presents the “Italian Heritage Award”
to Fulvia Fiorani assisted by board members from left: Marisa Schneider,
Gerry Morelli, Mike Anitra, Chris Anitra and Martha Kilbour.

POT LUCK DINNER
By Neil Raphael
On August 5th the Jewish Heritage Club held their first annual
pot luck dinner featuring recipes from “mama’s kitchen.” More
than one hundred members and guests attended this event that
was held in the clubhouse social hall. Over 50 dishes were offered,
many reminiscent of foods the attendees enjoyed as children —
pot roast, kugel, kasha veraniskas, cabbage soup, meatballs and
stuffed derma. There was also a large variety of salads, appetizers
and delicious desserts, including Mandelbrot. After dinner we
were treated to a live musical performance by “Midlife Crises,”
who performed famous show tunes and musical numbers from
the fifties. You could tell by all the singing and dancing that a
good time was had by all!
VLMVC MARCHES ON
By Michelle Schaefer
Valencia Lakes Military Veterans Club has been busy this
year with several community projects. The club, which dedicates
itself to Veterans Issues and charitable causes, worked closely
with representatives of GL Homes, Inc. to dedicate the first
Valencia Circle of Honor recognizing the services of its many
residents who are also Veterans. In addition to the flagpoles, the
Circle of Honor contains bricks with the names of Veterans and
other supporters who made a charitable contribution.
Since the Memorial Day Program, the Club’s Honor Guard
has represented the Club at the 4th of July Celebration and will
be participating in a remembrance at the Circle of Honor on
Veteran’s Day, November 11.
Following the successful gala event last year, honoring PFC
Nick Battle, a wounded warrior, the club is again sponsoring
a gala on November 9. This year’s event will raise funds to
support My Warriors Place, a local organization dedicated
toassisting returning veterans. The evening of fun, food and
fellowship is open to all residents and their guests. There are
many opportunities to volunteer within the VLMVC including
a new project that will involve sending gift boxes to soldiers.

A JERSEY TOMATO
GROWS IN
WIMAUMA!
When I moved to Florida I anticipated fresh tasty vegetables and
fruit year round! After all the sun shines 360 days a year, right?!
No more tasteless cardboard-like produce I was purchasing
up North. I planted tomato plants from Home Depot in May
and waited for that first juicy tomato only to watch the plant
succumb to disease from the heat and summer rain. I quickly
learned two things — Florida Summers can kill most anything
and just because Home Depot sells it doesn’t mean you should
or can grow it!
Four years later I haven’t given up
and my results have improved.
I am experimenting with
different seeds and plants
and currently growing
plants started with seeds
produced by Rutgers
University. I continue to
search for that perfect
“Jersey tomato.” Working
in a garden and growing
my own vegetables brings
me pleasure and a sense of
accomplishment. This past
summer I had a great crop
of Japanese eggplant and I am
currently planting my fall garden which
includes peppers, cucumbers, squash, broccoli and of course,
my tomatoes.
GLHomes has provided the residents of Valencia Lakes with a
beautiful community garden for growing fruits and vegetables
in a very manageable space. For information on the garden or
obtaining a plot contact [email protected].
