17th Annual What is The Angels for Children Toy Drive? In 1998, a pre-Christmas fire left a Wheaton family devastated. To assist the family, the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad requested donations of toys, food and cash to help them get resettled. The community outpouring was so generous, there were extra toys which were given to low-income children throughout the community. Thus, a tradition was born! Today, the need is greater than ever. With foreclosures, rising unemployment, and tough economic times, families in our area are really struggling. Your gift of a brand new toy, book, gift cards or cash will enable us to give the perfect gift to a low-income child that will be delivered by Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, who arrive on a fire engine on Christmas Eve! What kinds of gifts/toys do we suggest? We need NEW toys, unwrapped and in excellent condition. Board games, sports equipment, dolls, trucks, craft kits, books. While we get many toys for children ages 4-11, we do not receive many gifts for infants and babies (under 3) and for older kids/teens 12-18. For teens, we need gift cards, bath and lotion baskets, jewelry, purses, hat/glove/scarves, small electronic gifts, footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, books/journals, and age appropriate craft kits. For infants, we need age appropriate (under 2 yrs. old) toys and books. No toy guns or weapons can be accepted. Cash Donations: We can always use cash to purchase gifts and supplies. Donations can be sent to the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce, 2401 Blueridge Ave., Suite 101, Wheaton, MD 20902. We also need volunteers to help wrap and sort the gifts, and deliver the toys with Santa on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. The toy drive is a community outreach effort between the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce, and Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP).
