Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of
Judea in the days of Herod the king,
magi (magos) from the east arrived in
Jerusalem,

Herod filled Jerusalem with foreign
mercenaries and the cities of Palestine
with spies. No man or woman was safe
while Herod reigned. One by one he
murdered every rival claimant to his
throne. He stamped out the
Hasmoneans; he murdered his wife’s
brother, a lad of seventeen and his
father-in-law;

He murdered his wife, Mariamne, the
beautiful Maccabean princess, because
he was suspicious of her; he murdered
both of her sons, and five days before
his death he murdered his own son and
heir to the throne. Herod hacked his
way through life, killing tens of
thousands of those whom he ruled over.

Caesar Augustus is reported to have
once cynically said, “It is better to
be Herod’s swine than to be his
son.”

Then Herod secretly called the magi and
determined from them the exact time
the star appeared. And he sent them to
Bethlehem and said, “Go and search
carefully for the Child; and when you
have found Him, report to me, so that I
too may come and worship Him.”
