Ten Interesting
Toilet Anecdotes
1. Friend or foe? - Over 40,000 of our neighbours in the US
manage to hurt themselves in the bathroom every year. King
George II even died falling off one in 1760.
6. What did the Romans do for us? - The Roman army didn’t
have any toilet paper so they used a water soaked sponge on
the end of a stick!
2. Paying a visit - People in the UK, on average visit the
bathroom between six and eight times every day. That’s
about 2,500 times every year. This means that the average
person spends three whole years of their life sitting on the
toilet.
7. Toilet Acoustics - Forget singing in the shower, the toilet
could be your best bathroom backing band. Apparently most
toilets flush in the key of E flat.
3. Seriously sized sheets - It’s rumoured that toilet paper
was first invented by the Chinese in the 6th century. Each
sheet was two feet by three feet.
4. Invention - The flushing toilet was invented by Sir John
Harrington in 1596 for Queen Elizabeth I. He was originally
barred from the Royal Court for spreading smutty stories, but
after his invention, he was allowed back.
5. Away from home - A public toilet can play host to over
40,000 germs at any given time.

8. Toilet Chat - A study by the charity Tearfund found that
over 8 million people in the UK say that they use their mobiles
while in the bathroom. Over in the US, more than 7 million
people admit that they have dropped their handset into the
toilet bowl.
9. Toilet theme park - In South Korea, there is an entire
theme park and museum dedicated to the humble toilet.
10. Quick flush - Thomas Crapper didn’t invent the toilet but
he perfected the siphon flush system that we use today. He
was born in the village of Thorne - an anagram of throne.

pH is a measure, on a scale from 0-14, of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. ACIDIC solutions have a pH
less than 7 and ALKALINE solutions a pH greater than 7. Toilet cleaning products are usually ACIDIC, as they
are required to dissolve limescale. Hard surface Cleaners are usually ALKALINE. Washing up liquids are usual
neutral. In general, cleaning products which are described as NEUTRAL are less likely to require a hazardous
classification.

Q.
I can’t seem to get rid of the limescale in the staff toilets, can you
help?
A.
Limescale build-up in toilets is reduced through regular cleaning using a bristle brush
and general toilet cleaner and descaler, paying particular attention to cleaning under the
rim of the toilet.
Once limescale has built up to an excessive amount it can be very difficult to remove,
however if you use a specially designed cleaning product like Lifeguard Limescale
Remover or Evans E-Phos as per the instructions, this should remove the problem.
