Environmental Science - University of Balamand

University of Balamand
Faculty of S c i e n c e s
Background
Over the past two decades, there has
been a growing interest in environmental
issues. This interest provided the energy to
accelerate what has been deemed necessary
by world opinion: a scientific approach to
environmental management.
The Lebanese natural environment has
been, and still is, under constant attack from
pollution, deforestation, sea filling,
indiscriminate and unregulated fishing and
hunting, quarrying… activities that will
eventually lead to permanent damage to the
Lebanese terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
In addition, it is widely accepted by
home and corporate environments
worldwide that the field of sound
environmental practices is essential to
reverse the negative impacts of human
activities on the biosphere. In order to
meet this growing trend, the need for
highly qualified Environmental Scientists
has become paramount.
Environmental Science
Department
Program mission
This program will equip students with
the tools and knowledge to spearhead,
implement, and contribute to national,
regional, and international efforts towards
sustainable development. Students will be
exposed to the many linkages between
humans and the environment, and thus
will develop a holistic and grounded
perspective of environmental issues and
resource management. Initiated in the
proper research and scientific approaches,
students will have the option of becoming
scientists, managers, planners, decision
makers, and community activists.
