Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
When you think about wagon trains taking people westward you may
think that they relied heavily on horses. But to those hardy 19th-century
travelers, horses were not so important. Mules were. Mules were by
far the favorite pack animal for settlers of the American West.
A mule is a cross between a donkey and a horse. Farmers have
been breeding mules since ancient times. They, not camels, were the
favorite pack animals of desert-crossing merchants centuries ago.
George Washington bred mules here in America. He understood
their value to farmers. Mules could not only plow the fields, but
harvest them, too. They could haul crops to market.
Mules were essential to the pioneers. Mule-drawn wagons could
cover as many as 30 miles a day. That was five times as far as horses
could take them! On flat, dry land, a large mule pulling a stagecoach
could cover up to ten miles in an hour. That was very fast for that
time. And when the travelers reached their destinations, mules were
useful again. They could haul the logs needed to build new cabins.
Here’s to the mule—an unsung American hero.
