Georgia State 2009-10 Story Line
Optimism, fueled by a deeper, stronger roster of players has Coach
Lea Henry enthusiastic and confident heading into the 2009-10
season.
Seven returning letterwinners, including the senior trio pictured
here (Shay Rawls, Brittany Graham and Danyiell McKeller), provides the team its leadership.
Georgia State’s game plan begins with defense
as the Panthers finished No. 10 in the nation last
year in steals.
Coach Henry, just 12 wins away from
300 at the Division I level, feels forward Danyiell McKeller is an allCAA caliber player. McKeller led
the team in both scoring and rebounding last year, but her injuries to her knees kept her out of
the lineup for most of 10 games.
Sophomore point guard Crystal
Johnson led the CAA in assists and was No. 20 in the nation last
year. Fellow All-CAA rookie guard Jylisa Williams led all CAA
freshmen in scoring (314 points). Wing Brittany Graham hit 40
three-point shots to lead the team’s outside game. Senior Shay
Rawls has more than 500 career rebounds and junior Chan Harris
averaged double-figure scoring once she cracked the lineup midway through the season.
Coach Henry and staff will get the first
look at the five new recruits, led by
junior college all-america forward
Angelique Burtts. The team added
6-foot-3 freshman Cody Paulk
from Alabama prep ball and
6-foot-2 freshman Erika
Sumper from South
Carolina high school
ball. Guards Tiffany
Anderson and Jerlisa
Taylor will get a chance
to make contributions.

The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)
The CAA has placed three or more teams in postseason tournaments for four straight years, with two teams receiving NCAA bids last
year (Drexel and VCU). Women’s basketball in the CAA has ranked between 8th-12th in national conference RPI ratings among the
31 Division I leagues for the past four seasons. Two of the nation’s top three scorers last year were in the CAA and both return for their
senior seasons. In each of the past two WNBA drafts, the CAA has had a first-round pick. The 12-member CAA will play its conference
championship this year on March 11-14 on the campus of James Madison University.

Last year, the Panthers ranked No. 10 in the nation in steals (11.8 per game)
with 18 games with double-digit steals. The full-court challenging Panthers
forced an average 22.7 turnovers per game, including 20 or more in a game
23 times.
The top returning bandits from last year’s team are the sophomore guards,
Jylisa Williams with 71 steals and Crystal Johnson with 61 thefts. Williams
tied the school record for a game with nine.
Post player Chan Harris used her wide wing span to come away with 37
more steals in the full-court traps.
The Panthers 354 steals last year were 17 shy of the 1980-81 team’s alltime best of 371 steals in a season.
SHARING The Ball
Passing is another integral part of Coach Henry’s plans as last year’s team
was No. 2 in the CAA in assists and No. 74 in the nation. State had 241
assists, an average of 14 per game. Pass first, dribble second, encourages
getting the ball to the open teammate.
Point guard Crystal Johnson led the CAA with 166 assists (5.53) and
ranked No. 20 in the NCAA. Fellow All-CAA freshman guard Jylisa Wiliams made 61 assists to give the backcourt a combined 227 passes that led
directly to the baskets.
Baking The BIRTHDAY Cakes
A trio of Panther basketball family celebrate their birthdays in November.
Guard Traci Haltiwanger celebrates on Nov. 9, followed four days later
by Brittany Graham on the 13th. Head Coach Lea Henry blows out her
candles on Nov. 22 (the day of last year’s win over Clemson).
For OPENERS
Georgia State opens the regular season in Atlanta, but not at home, as the
Panthers will travel up I-75 to face Kennesaw State on Saturday, Nov. 14.
The Owls of the Atlantic Sun were 15-14 last year, despite a trio of losses
to ACC schools.
The Panthers then get ready for the home opener when top-20 ranked Florida State rolls into the Sports Arena on Sunday, Nov. 22.
Following those two openers, the Panthers will host a Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 27-28 with 20-win Murray State, Troy and Morgan State.
35th YEAR of Basketball
This marks Georgia State’s 35th season of women’s basketball in the
NCAA with the first season being in 1975-76. The team has earned three
NCAA bids and one WNIT bid.
