Hydrogen - ResearchGate

Hydrogen, the Answer.

Hydrogen

Is the smallest atom in existence
(1 proton 1 electron)



The first element on the periodic table
The most fundamental element
Composes 90% of the universe


70% of the human body
99% of the Sun

Carrier for electrons (movement of
electrons always accompanied by
hydrogen)

All sources of energy contain hydrogen



Carbohydrates
Oil and other fuel
More hydrogen shows greater energy
capacity
How we create energy

Humans need to consume food to create
energy, a process that takes place in the
mitochondria of cells.

Food gets broken down and transported
inside cells and oxygen is used as a way to
breakdown food into usable energy. This
process is called cellular respiration.

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells
that facilitates combustion of nutrients for
energy inside the cells.

The picture on the right shows the electron
transport chain located in the inner
membrane of mitochondria. NADH, which is
an energy carrier, transports the energy
harvested from the nutrients we ingest to
build a hydrogen ion gradient using the
energy from electrons being transported on
the electron transport chain.

The buildup of this hydrogen gradient allows
for its use in synthesizing ATP(Energy currency
of cells) by the ATP Synthesis proteins.
The Oxygen Paradox
 Our bodies create
antioxidants to neutralize
free radicals, but often times
due to our environment and
lifestyle, it’s not enough.

Fly (1 month), Cheetah (12
years) Horses (25years)
Tortoise(100-500 years),
Elephants (70 years),
Human Athletes (70 Years)
Normal Humans (80 years)

Oxidative Stress and Disease
 Oxidative stress caused by free radicals have been
linked to almost 90% of all diseases.
Types of Free Radicals
Hydrogen Peroxide
It is not toxic on its own, but
produces hydroxyl radicals.
Used by white blood cells
to kill bacteria and viruses.
Hydroxyl Radical
The reaction of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide
produces the hydroxyl radical.
Superoxide
Formed through small
changes in molecular
oxygen. These are later
converted to hydroxyl
radicals or hydrogen peroxide
Molecular Oxygen
The harmful free radicals are
the superoxides and hydroxyl radicals
which both contain lone pair electrons
Hydroxyl Radical Damage
Limitations of Other
Antioxidants
Taking regular antioxidant supplements is only slightly helpful because
they:

Cannot be absorbed easily by the body even at high dosages

Cannot cross the blood-brain-barrier

Cannot penetrate into mitochondria

Cannot selectively neutralize only the bad free radicals

Become free radicals themselves. Once they give away an electron
to free radicals, they become free radicals themselves!
Molecular Weights of
Antioxidants
Most antioxidants are very large molecules that the
body has difficulty absorbing.
Glutathione
Vitamin C
Coenzyme Q10
Hydrogen
Hydrogen, however, is
the smallest element in
existence, so it can
penetrate into cells, and
even cross the blood brain
barrier easily.
Catechin
Vitamin E

Ability of Hydrogen as an
Antioxidant
Antioxidants

Most commonly used
antioxidants are Vitamin
C and Vitamin E.


They are
recommended only at
low dosages because
they become free
radicals themselves
after they neutralize a
free radical. Vitamin C
and Vitamin E need to
be taken synergistically
to give their effects.
Notice that both Vitamin
C and E donate a
hydrogen and two
electrons in order to
reduce a free radical.

Radicals into Water
Hydrogen is a proven
antioxidant

Hydrogen is the only atom that can act independently as an
antioxidant.
 The strength of an antioxidant is the amount of hydrogen and
electrons it is able to donate.

Methods of Hydrogen
Intake
 Hydrogen absorption in nature
 Absorbing hydrogen from the air: Next to a waterfall or
beach where waves are crashing, water is split up into
hydrogen and oxygen due to the energy of crashing
water, allowing hydrogen gas to be released into the
air.
 Absorbing through food: Fresh raw vegetables and
fresh fruit contain hydrogen that can be absorbed
(Freshness decreases as soon as the fruit or vegetable
is harvested. The sooner it is consumed the higher the
hydrogen content.)
Methods of Hydrogen
Intake
 Administration of hydrogen by medical professional
(Currently only done in Asia)
 Intravenous injection (Hydrogen gas infused saline)
 Inhalation of Hydrogen gas
 Both methods need precise administration protocols
to avoid health hazards.
 Ingestion of hydrogen through hydrogen water
 Hydrogen water absorption: Drinking water containing
greater than 1ppm of hydrogen gas will allow
absorption of hydrogen through the stomach and
intestines. (Benefits can be seen by drinking 1~2 liters
of hydrogen water daily)
Benefits of Hydrogen
 Anybody can take hydrogen and see benefits
 Children, elderly, male and female
 Raises the body temp from 0.5 to 1 degree celsius.
 Increases blood circulation
 Improves skin health
 Boost in energy, mental clarity, and focus
 Decreases body odors and gas smells.
 These are normally caused by free radicals
Kangen or Ionized Water Machines
vs. Hydrogen Water Machines
 “Alkaline” water that can be made from ionized water
machines have some health benefits.
 These health benefits are the result of the tiny amount of
hydrogen gas (~0.01ppm) that is dissolved in the alkaline
water.
 Hydrogen water machines on the other hand saturate
the water with up to 1.2 ppm of dissolved hydrogen gas.
This is 120x more than alkaline water. The difference can
be seen in the health benefits that hydrogen water
provides.
