Spring Has Sprung Here
at Belmont Village!
It’s spring here in Memphis and
April is looking beautiful at
Belmont. During these
sunshine-filled days, we will be
taking advantage of the season
with impromptu sight seeing
drives, a guided bus tour of Shelby
Farms, and other fun-filled
outings.
We will also have our annual
spring Easter egg hunt. We
welcome resident family members
and employee’s children 10 and
under. The egg hunt will start at
approximately 2:30pm and go
until the eggs run out. There will
also be a golden egg that whoever
gets will receive a spring basket!
So make sure to come Easter
Sunday and enjoy the wonderful
lunch prepared by our Chef Vinny
and don’t forget the camera to
capture a picture of your little one
with the Easter Bunny!
A few facts about April. April is
the fourth month of the year and
the first full month of spring. No
one knows for certain how April
got its name, but it might have
come from the Latin word aperire,
which means “to open.” April is,
after all, the month when (in the
northern hemisphere) buds begin
to open and things begin to grow
again after the winter.
In April, small animals that
were hibernating usually come
out, the birds fly back northward
to settle, and bees and butterflies
begin to gather nectar. In some
parts of the world, April is
planting time, but in other parts,
it’s the harvest season. Because of
the nice warm weather of April,
amateur athletes begin to go
outside while professional
baseball begins. People usually do
huge spring cleaning and mowing.
The first day of April begins with
April Fools’ Day, so don’t get
fooled by a prankster!
Many historic events also took
place in the month of April. The
Revolutionary War in America
began on April 19, 1775. On April
30, 1975, General Duong Vanh
Minh surrendered and the
communist forces captured
Saigon, which led to the end of
the Vietnam War.
I hope everyone has a
wonderful April. Enjoy the
warmer weather and special times
with family and friends.

Polypharmacy: A
Significant Problem for
Our Senior Population
Polypharmacy is defined as the
practice of administering different
medications concurrently for the
treatment of a single disease
process, which may result in
adverse drug interactions. This
practice is very common amongst
our senior population and has
proven to be problematic. Studies
show that our senior population
tends to take high numbers of
medications.
Included in this number are
prescription as well as over the
counter medications which
includes vitamins and
supplements as well. In fact OTC
drugs like Tylenol and ibuprofen
have been found to contribute to
adverse drug reactions in the
elderly. So how does this happen
to our seniors and how can we
prevent this? This practice
becomes problematic when
multiple physicians are
prescribing medications without
consulting with other physicians.
Often times physicians are only
provided with a partial list of
medications. This is especially
dangerous for the elderly and
often times can be considered a
contributing factor in increase
confusion and falls. Keeping in
mind that as we age, the way our
bodies process medications
changes significantly which can
lead to greater concentrations of
drugs left in the body for longer
periods of time.
With all of this information
how does one prevent this from
happening? The first
recommendation would be to
select one provider to oversee
medication regimens. Be sure that
all physicians are aware of
changes that have been made by
others and always keep a complete
updated list of medications. Insist
that at each doctor’s visit that
medications are reviewed for
accuracy and always remember to
include over the counter
medications along with all
vitamins and supplements as well.
Ask your physician if all current
medications are necessary if
possible to eliminate those that
are not. Always remember to clear
the medicine cabinet of
discontinued and expired
medications and of course follow
the physicians’ orders carefully.
Simply put by keeping medication
routines simple and being aware
of which medications could be
harmful to our seniors,
medications can be used to
improve the quality of life of our
seniors without bringing
unnecessary harm.

All About Easter
Capt. Stephanie and her crew!
Grace in the captains hat!
Easter, one of the most
important holidays in
Christianity, celebrates the central
event of the Christian faith: the
resurrection of Jesus Christ after
his crucifixion. This event is
significant to Christians because,
through his death and
resurrection, Jesus suffered for the
sins of the world, yet was able to
overcome death.
Easter is observed on the first
Sunday after the full moon that
occurs on or after the vernal
equinox (the first day of spring).
According to the Bible, the events
of the crucifixion and resurrection
occurred during the Jewish
Passover, a springtime celebration.
Easter is preceded by Lent, a
40-day period of fasting and
repentance that begins on Ash
Wednesday. The Sunday before
Easter is Palm Sunday, the day
that Jesus arrived in Jerusalem.
The week before Easter is called
Holy Week.
During Holy Week, Christians
observe Maundy Thursday, when
the Last Supper with Jesus and his
disciples took place; and Good
Friday, the day of the crucifixion.
The resurrection is then celebrated
on Easter Sunday.
Children often participate in
Easter egg hunts and look forward
to visits from the Easter Bunny,
who is said to deliver candy and
eggs during the night. Eggs and
rabbits were once used as fertility
symbols during ancient
springtime festivals, but now
represent new life when associated
with the Easter holiday.

To Your Health:
Whatever Works
Experts often advise limiting
screen time before bed in order
to fall asleep more quickly.
However, some people find it
much easier to doze off with the
TV on, and that’s OK. If you find
watching TV helps clear your
mind so you can relax, then go
ahead. Put the TV on a timer so
it turns off after you’re asleep
and it won’t disrupt your rest
later in the night.
