Week One – 5th September Mrs Holroyd’s word of the week: Inevitable Meaning Inevitable As an adjective, it describes something that is certain to happen; it is unavoidable. For example: Every year, it is inevitable that the holidays will end and summer will change to autumn. Meaning Inevitable As a noun, the word can be used to describe a situation that is unavoidable For example: The students had to accept the inevitable that it was time to go back to school Mrs Holroyd’s Comment A few months ago I would never have picked this word, believing it had depressing associations of not being able to avoid things we don’t want to happen; it suggests we cannot control things or make things happen as we would wish. However, during the Olympics, my view of the word changed when Max Whitlock made his teenage dream reality, achieving two gold medals in Gymnastics in the Rio Olympics. His coach, Hann, when interviewed said “We have followed the philosophy of inevitable dreams. You don’t see your target as something you may never achieve, but as something inevitable – it will happen” When I heard that, it made me think about the word in a completely different way, so I decided to pick it as my word of the week, hoping is would set a really positive tone to the start of the new school year”
