JA BizTown introduces students to the free enterprise system through classroom
instruction and active participation in a simulated community. This program teachers students
economic concepts and prepares them for their visit to JA BizTown where they will have the
opportunity to put into action the many concepts they have studied in the classroom.

Unit 1: Introducing Free Enterprise
The students discover the meaning
and advantages of free enterprise as
they become familiar with the
business represented at JA BizTown..
Students are introduced to the
concepts of opportunity costs,
alternatives and scarcity.
The student will
 relate economic terms to
businesses represented at JA
BizTown
Unit 2: Banking
Students demonstrate the skills
needed to maintain checking and
saving accounts. They learn about
bank services and relate them to
businesses and consumers at JA
BizTown.
The student will
 identify all parts of a check
 write checks, maintain a
checkbook register
 complete deposit slips
 make bank deposits
 identify reasons to save money
 calculate interest earned on a
saving account
 track the flow of money
through the bank and JA
BizTown
The student will
 identify business costs
 demonstrate their knowledge
of pricing strategies.
 set prices for goods and
services.
 recognize the importance of
teamwork to a successful
business.
 identify ethical behavior and
determine how the right
behavior could improve
customer satisfaction.
Unit 3: Business Operations
Students recognize the importance of
ethics, teamwork and decision
making in the operation of a high
quality business. Students learn
about the costs of doing business.
Students explore business
responsibilities such as community
service, conservation, support for the
community, and support of the arts.


Unit 6: The Debriefing
Reflect, Review and Respond
Students will discuss and evaluate
their visit experience and make
connections between what they
learned prior to coming to the Village
and what they observed while
working at
JA BizTown.
