Knights of Columbus May All Saints Council 11402 Dunwoody, Georgia 2012 Volume 19 Issue 5 (Established July 4th, 1994) “Opere et Veritate” 1 John 3,18 Brothers: 770-458-5670 or email [email protected]. Thanks again to all who participated in the Lenten Fish Frys. We were truly blessed with outstanding support from the parish and the community. If you are out of town this weekend, John is taking orders – same contact information, pick-up at McGivney at the meeting, Tuesday May 1, or by special arrangement. As you probably know, besides providing an opportunity for us Knights to get together and have some fun, the Fish Frys are a major source of funding for the Council’s charitable activities. So it is important, both to the council and to the charities we support, that they are successful. We had 6 brothers join us at our first degree on April 24th. We also got two transfers, See details inside. We also had our Brother Chris Trantow and new wife Ansley marry at All Saints with an honor guard. This year with the new venue and the new kitchen, we were able to generate new record revenue for those charities. Don’t forget the Dunwoody Charity Golf Tournament on May 14th at St. Marlo Country Club in Duluth. A few more slots are still available. See the poster inside. On a more serious note, one of Many of you were at the “Fish my duties as Grand Knight is to submit the Necrology Report to Fry Appreciation” dinner on the State Secretary. Please note this very important meeting on your calendars and plan to attend and vote. The three trustees of the council-- Gert Kampfer, Lou Hlad, and Don Myers- are entrusted with the duty of canvassing the officers to ascertain whether or not they wish to rerun for their offices. Interest from other 3rd and 4th degree members is also sought out to bring new talent and energy to the council. At the Tuesday May 1st meeting, the trustees must announce the result of their efforts and reveal their suggestions for the June elections. The suggestions are not binding and any member attaining the 3rd degree may run for any officer position. All members who attend the June business meeting (Tuesday June 5th) may vote. There are no absentee ballots. These are the selections of the Nominating Committee for the June elections. Remember that any brother in All Saints Council having attained the 3rd degree may run against these nominees for any position. It is anticipated that current Financial Secretary, John Stowell, will not continue. Assistant Inside and Outside Guards will be chosen as well and may or may not be the incumbents. Activity Directors are also appointed and will be announced after the election. It is anticipated that our council will have a new District Deputy as well, since the district boundaries are being redefined. A District Deputy is a supervisor of several councils and reports their compliance with regulations directly to the Georgia State Deputy, Rick Sisko. It is possible that the new District Deputy could be a very familiar face to our membership. Our new district will include All Saints, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the Georgia Tech Council. Our current lead Outside Guard, Gene Gannon, has moved to Woodstock and is in the process of transferring to the nearby St. Peter Chanel Council. We will miss his valuable contributions to our service projects and wish him well at his new parish and council. 2 Fish Fry Volunteer Party (Not a Fish in Sight) It was another full crowd both inside and outside our own McGivney Hall as the Council thanked its hardworking volunteers for a record-breaking 8,009 meal effort this year. The party was held on April 22nd. Dennis Caniglia was the host chef aided by Brother Greg Kane as they again provided their signature specialty whiskey steaks with all the trimmings. Monsignor Marren was awarded a special plaque for his support in moving the Lenten Fry to the gym this year. Without his support, no record was possible. 3 3 New 1st Degree Council Brothers Brian Benninghoff John Lamberski David Grayson, Sr. John Martin Bill Hoskin Ryan Ross On Tuesday, April 24th, we were privileged to add six new 1st degree brothers to our council. With the two new transfers noted on the following page, All Saints now can boast of 395 members. These last six new members have ensured us of qualifying for our sixth consecutive Double Star Council Award. This may well be unprecedented (except that our Assembly sister council St. Brigid is also expected to attain this most difficult honor). To attain a Star Award, a council must increase its membership by 7% in a fraternal year. To attain a Double Star Award, a council must increase its membership by 14% in a fraternal year. This means that to attain another Double Star Award next year, a council of 400 members must increase its membership by 56 without losing any. Transfers between councils do not count for or against the goal, since the total worldly membership does not change. There are also minimal insurance membership increase components and minimal council activity components in the requirements. Our many activities and our wonderful field 4 agent, John Knight, make sure that those goals are always met as well. 4 Recent Council Transfers Sean Mercer is a 2nd degree transfer from Mary Our Queen Council in Norcross. He is the new Youth Minister at All Saints Parish. Father Brian Kerr is a member of the Missionaries of the Poor based in Jamaica. He was here at All Saints with Fr. Richard Ho Lung and the concert troop last month. Fr. Kerr decided to transfer into our council from the Annunciation Council of Altamonte Springs, FL. He is our 19th clergy member. Sean Mercer Fr. Brian Kerr Sean, 23, is another young recruit. “Knight to Knight” Corner Our council insurance field agent, John Knight, has put together some great tips to consider monthly on the importance of proper insurance coverage. Following is his May insurance topic to ponder. KofC insurance is sold only to brothers and their families at great rates. Please consider having a personal conversation with John soon. May Insurance Tip --- Four Parts of Retirement: Phase Two In a previous article, I discussed protection and how Knights of Columbus products can provide it for you and your wife in your retirement years. The next phase of retirement is accumulation of cash. Those life insurance policies you purchased, if they are permanent plans, carry a savings element that helps with accumulation of wealth. Another good option is a Knights of Columbus retirement plan or annuity with a guaranteed interest rate. After basic protection, you spend your working life preparing not to work…for the day the paychecks stop. Factor in here also your pensions, government benefits and other savings you’ve acquired over the years. Some experts will tell you that you should prepare for retirement with a plan that calls for 70% of the income you had pre-retirement. I think that falls woefully short. Plan on the 90% range. Consider this: what are you giving up that translates to 30% of your income? You still have to eat, you will travel more (going to see the grandchildren), taxes need to be paid, and on and on. Be careful of that 70% arbitrary rule. I can help you build a plan to reach your goals. Contact me today to learn more.5 John Knight, Field Agent Cell: (404) 569-5265 Email: [email protected] 5 Tom Simon Awarded “Knight-of-the-Month” Because this busy brother ran the car raffle for the parish, was the President of the All Saints Men’s Club, helped run the Lenten Fish Frys partnering with Dennis Caniglia, and was now managing the upcoming Dunwoody Charity Golf Tournament, Brother Tom Simon’s (right) election as Knight-ofthe-Month was a very easy one. Past Grand Knight and Trustee Lou Hlad did the honors. Brother Chris Trantow & Ansley Marry April 14th Brother Chris Trantow (son of Sir Knight Dean Trantow) and Ansley were married in All Saints Church by our Sir Knight Fr. Bill Hao in a beautiful ceremony featuring an honor guard of 13 Fr. Charles Watters Assembly brothers in full regalia. Their professional wedding pictures should be something to remember. 6 Next, our Sir Knight Tim Krulia marries fiancée Jackie Marshall on July 7 at St. Brigid with an honor guard. Who says we don’t have lots of young members? 6 New Crucifix in All Saints Church By Brother Norbert Braza The first thing one notices when entering All Saints Church is the new crucifix hanging above the altar. There had always been some opposition to such an item by some parishioners, although such is required by Vatican Law. This article discusses differences between a cross and a crucifix involving both doctrinal and personal thoughts. For definition purposes, a crucifix is a cross with the figure of Christ crucified (a Corpus Christi) upon it. The Church has issued General Instructions about the use of a crucifix in all churches. The instructions state: “There is also to be a cross, with the figure of Christ crucified upon it, either on the altar or near it, where it is clearly visible to the assembled congregation. It is appropriate that such a cross, which calls to mind for the faithful the saving Passion of the Lord, remain near the altar even outside of liturgical celebrations.” The wooden cross that is currently outside the church main window is not compliant with this instruction for two reasons, namely, it does not have the figure of Christ, nor can it be seen by the entire assembled congregation. Other than these General Instructions there is an interesting history of the cross and the crucifix. It would take too much time to discuss these differences, other than to say that the cross became popular around the 2nd century and the crucifix around the fifth century. Over time and in different parts of the world the form of the cross and crucifix evolved. There are, however, significant doctrinal differences between a cross and a crucifix. Today one finds that the crucifix is used primarily by Catholics, while the cross is used by most other denominations. The cross and the crucifix represent two very different understandings of Christ's atonement for sin. Both Catholics and Protestants believe that Christ died to pay the penalty for sin. The difference is that Protestants believe that Christ's work was finished on the cross, and Catholics believe it continues. For Catholics, the appearance of Christ on the crucifix represents the fact that Christ's atoning work is still going on. When Catholics celebrate the Mass, we believe that we are re-sacrificing, re-presenting, re-enacting Christ’s physical sacrifice in an un-bloody manner. Christ’s sacrifice is eternal because sins are still being forgiven even two millennia after his death. This is why the crucifix has been mandated to be shown by the altar because it forcefully and vividly reminds us of this fundamental truth of our faith. Dogma aside, on a personal level, consider the meaning behind a cross and a crucifix. The cross simply reminds one that life is filled with struggles. We all were born with a fallen nature. People become sick, they die, they lose their jobs, they lose their homes in hurricanes, we hurt ourselves and others by our sins, etc, etc, etc,. Looking at a cross simply reminds one that our lives have a lot of difficulties. We really need to be reminded that there is help. That’s precisely what the crucifix does. Looking at the image of Christ hanging on the cross reminds us that God, in the person of His Son, loves us so much that he suffered and died for each of us so that one day we may be eternally happy with him in heaven. The crucifix vividly reminds us of this fundamental truth of our faith; the cross does not. 7 Note: Special thanks to Brothers Jim Mammoser and Wiley Maloof who lobbied for such a crucifix to be installed at All Saints for several years. Also, thanks to the 7 anonymous parishioners who financed it. Origin of “Our Father” Doxology Very early on in the Catholic Liturgy, the Lord's Prayer was concluded with a doxology ( a prayer of praise), “For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever”. This was not part of the original Greek Scriptural text and consequently is not included in many modern Bible translations. However, there are other non-Scriptural writings which have been preserved from the early days of the Church. It was here, where the doxology was first found in the important document called the "Didache," (written between 70-140 AD). “Didache” (Did-ah-kay) simply means 'teaching'. The “Our Father” in the Didache had the doxology tagged onto the end without the words “the kingdom”. The tradition of the doxology was carried into the Liturgy, and became so closely associated with the Lord's Prayer that it is now often mistaken to be part of the prayer itself. The words “the kingdom” were added later and are preserved in the document “The Apostolic Constitutions” (written 250-380 AD). The “Our Father” is contained twice in the Bible (Matt. 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4) with no doxology, for although very ancient, it is not found in the original manuscripts. This is simply a prayer from the believers in the early centuries of the Church whose spirits were moved by the Holy Spirit to close this beautiful prayer in grandiose fashion. These early writings never present it as an essential part of the “Our Father”, but rather an “embolism," (added prayer), intended to increase fervor and direct the intention of the faithful. The early Church did use the doxology in the Liturgy just as we do today. The doxology has been included in and taken out of the Mass throughout history. This prayer had been omitted from the Liturgy of recent centuries until Vatican II when it was reauthorized for use at Mass only. It is recited and acknowledged as an ancient prayer of praise. This is why it is not said immediately following the words “deliver us from evil”. So why do Protestants use these words? It is believed that a copyist when copying Matthew's Gospel put a note in the margin, noting that in the Mass, we follow the “Our Father” with the doxology. A later copyist mistakenly transcribed the margin note into the text itself and it was preserved in all subsequent copies of the manuscript. The King James Version translators in 1611 A.D., (The King James Version is a Protestant Bible) used a copy of the New Testament that contained these added words. Most Protestant scholars admit that these words are not those of our Lord. But since this text was included by the translators, it is used by Protestants, but is, ironically, a Catholic Liturgical prayer. An English version of the Our Father without the doxology actually did become accepted in the English-speaking world during the reign of Edward VI when the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England did not add the doxology. However, during the reign of Elizabeth I there was a desire to rid the Church of England from any Catholic vestiges. Because of this wish for severance and not because of authenticity, the doxology of the Lord’s Prayer was re-included. Therefore, when non-Catholics ask us why we make the “Our Father” shorter than their form, we should tell them that the added words which they use are not a part of the prayer as given by our Blessed Lord, but rather a pious addition which is ancient, but not original. Remember, before the last book in the New Testament was written, the Catholic Church celebrated her golden jubilee (50 year anniversary) and 11 of the Apostles had already died. The Church existed before the Bible. The Bible came from the Church. The Church did not 8 come from the Bible. The Catholic Church knows what words were included in the prayer and what words were not because She, the Bride of Christ, was there. 8 Council Monogrammed Shirts Available Now that we are deep in our Lenten Fish Fry Events, is is time to troop the colors. What better way to show your support of the council than by purchasing an All Saints Logo Shirt and parading it about at the Fish Fry. We currently have them available in red, navy blue, black, and white for $25 each. The sizes are large and X-large. The shirts run big, so if you are a borderline large/extra large person, the large will do fine. Both Lou Hlad and Bryan Kler wear large and they are not small people. If you are interested in purchasing a logo shirt, contact Bryan Kler at [email protected] or 404-944-6629 and indicate your name, quantity, color, and size. Bryan may have some monogrammed baseball hats still available as well for $15. Wear your council ID apparel proudly this year and give our council and our Order as much publicity as possible. Marty McCormick Wins Annuity Our new Brother Marty McCormick was fortunate enough to be at the April Council Business Meeting when his name was pulled to win a $100 insurance annuity. This prize is only available to new brothers in their first year of membership and they must be present at the meeting to win. Marty becomes our latest insurance member after Frank Seco de Lucena, last month’s winner. There is a special signup sheet at the entrance table for new members in addition to the other signup sheet for the normal attendance award drawing. We were not quick enough to take a picture of the presentation. Sorry. 9 9 10 10 Onion Project is Another Sellout WE DID IT! Thanks to a great Council 11402 TEAM EFFORT, and the leadership of our Sales Guru Dean Trantow, our Council sold out of our 555 ten pound bags of Vidalia Onions by the end of the 12:15 Mass. Thanks to all who either Bought onions or helped to Sell them after the Masses on the weekend of April 28-29. The Onion Sale will bring about $3000 to our Council. Not bad for a ONE Weekend effort. And, our charities will benefit greatly. We want to thank the other nine Councils who participated with us this year, namely: St. Andrew, St. Benedict , St. Brigid , St. Monica, St. Brendan, Prince of Peace, Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Joseph (Athens), and St. Thomas More. We had nearly 3,000 ten pound bags shipped from South Georgia to cover the needs of the Councils involved in the sale. Their participation helps minimize the individual costs for the long distance and local trucking needs. And, again a big thanks go to Ed Krise and his warehouse staff at Courier South for their help in receiving the delivery and arranging for the local delivery to the participating Councils. Also, the team of John Buchholz, Dean and Chris Trantow reallocated the shipment onto the pallets for the specific Councils. Thankfully, no back injuries were reported. It’s good to have “younger” backs to help with this stage of the work. Dean Trantow enthusiastically stepped forward to handle the job of ONION SALES MANAGER, and did a great job of organizing and directing the many volunteers who stepped forward to help. Along with Kevin Murray, who was the Inventory Control Manager, they made sure that each station had ONIONS to sell. Over 70 Brother Knights served on our Sales Team - a new record for participation. A Special thanks to those Brothers who worked at multiple Masses to ensure that “No Onion Was Left Unsold”. While it’s tempting to think in terms of “MORE ONIONS” for next year, we feel very fortunate to have this year’s great weather and the continued support of our All Saints Parishioners, so time will tell as to how many onions will be ordered in the future. But, for now it’s time to cherish the fact that for another year we can “Stop and Smell the Onions!” Council Benevolence/Charity/Service Brother Jim Mammoser requested a gift of $300 to each of our three seminarians. Already in budget and approved. Council received a request from Brother Mark Foster to donate $1,000 to the Birthright Atlanta charity. Because the amount is over $500, the motion will be voted in May. Council continued its 4th year of Fathers for Good seminars and announced the seminars for year four. Brother John Buchholz requested a $2,000 donation to I-Care. Because it exceeds $500, it will be voted in May. This is the group of volunteers that drive elderly to and from medical appointments. Brother B.J. Van Gundy requested a $500 donation to the Georgia Special Olympics called “Over the Edge”. He will rappel down a 25-story building during the fundraiser. Our Dunwoody Charity Golf Tournament on May 14th will raise money for six charities (as will our Vidalia Onion Sale). 11 Our ongoing funeral acolyte program continues serving all parish funerals as it has since 1997. More acolytes are being recruited. 11 Council Birthdays and Anniversaries May Birthdays Louis Bernard Rob Conners Eric Martin Mack Smith Adam Drost Scott Earley Gene Pawlak Thomas Scanlon Guy Stryker Adam Sheeter Chip Follert Bert Trapani Fred Schlitt George Swartz Dave Richardson Andrew Bayles Roland Fredette Joerg Grau Mark Moots Bill Allen Ken Boerman Mario Commito Bernard Boehnlein Matthew Planer Richard Roth Henry Schoeler Jerry Howley Ray Turcotte James McDevitt Mark Yanta Mike Walker Chris Doyle Matthew James Marion Maloof Dean Trantow Paul Delorme Ed Trainor 1st 2nd 2nd 2nd 3rd 3rd 5th 5th 7th 9th 9th 9th 11th 12th 13th 14th 14th 16th 16th 17th 17th 17th 20th 21st 22nd 22nd 23rd 23rd 24th 26th 27th 29th 29th 29th 29th 31st 31st May Wedding Anniversaries Date Years 30th Gerry & Vickey Schaefer 18th John & Karleen Buchholz 52 49 23rd Gregory & Anita Brandner 3rd Paul & Debbie Doppel 37 37 17th David & Patricia Flynn 37 17th David & Carol Mason 37 29th Esnar (EJ) & Suzanne Couvillio n 36 20th Thomas & Ann Marie Kelly 34 12th Bert & Jeanne Trapani 33 30th Jim & Kathy Erdy 32 30th Joerg & Heidi Grau 20th Mark & Kitty Moots 24 23 26th Bill & Cathy Haas 22 25th Jim & Theresa Scandle 31st Matt & Elisabeth Allen 21 20 23rd Glenn & Leslie Gray 20 23rd William & Charlotte Stobierski 19 15th Al & Sylvia Kosek 23rd Chris & Milla Callison 17 14 30th Pat (Jr.) & Tricia Casey 13 21st Ty & Claudia Leon 6th Kevin & Samantha Murray 13 12 5th Daniel & Mollie Quinnelly 12 25th Bruce & Stacey Barker 10 19th Bryan & Brandi Kler 16th Todd & Beth Papetti 10 3 Upcoming Exemplification Opportunities 1st/2nd Degrees Saturday May 5th - St. Brigid Council, 3400 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek 30022. 1st degree at 10AM, register 9:15AM and 2nd degree starts about 11:30AM.
