The proposal called for an across-the-board five percent wage cut and would have shortened the time that laid-off workers could be on the recall list from five years to three. In return, management offered to increase its employer contribution to the health care premium nine percent per year over the three-year agreement. It also expanded bereavement to cover in-law relatives and those of domestic partners. In negotiations the union countered with different ways to give the courts the five percent cut other than in straight wages, offering to take some of it in furlough days. They also asked for guarantees of no layoffs and a sunset or end wages, offering to take some of it in furlough days. They also asked for guarantees of no layoffs and a sunset or end of the wage cut when the contract expired. All union proposals were rebuffed. Management said the proposal was a package: no changes, take it or leave it. Members were unhappy with management's inflexibility in negotiations even though they understood the SF Court is restrained by the financial mismanagement of the Administrative Office of the Courts, the bloated bureaucracy that runs California's court system. Top AOC executives have been caught spending thousands of dollars on steak and martini dinners, and revelations of exorbitant executive perks have raised eyebrows and ire. But it's the $2 billion being poured into a boondoggle still-not-working database — more than enough to cover every cut in every court in the state — that's really drawn fire from our members and the public. SEIU 1021 members expose secrecy in SF Redevelopment Agency dealings Employees of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency will reveal at a press conference on Monday how major redevelopment projects are at risk due to lack of transparency and public accountability in the transition of projects to a successor agency under new state law (SB26). SFRA workers represented by SEIU 1021 and IFPTE Local 21 will present their case immediately before a meeting of the oversight board created to oversee the redevelopment transition. Experienced staff doesnʼt know if they will have a job in three weeks and San Francisco taxpayers have no idea if their money is being wasted. With only weeks to go before a March 30 deadline, the SFRA management has shut out current employees from the transition process, making it impossible to identify which projects are covered under SB26. The unions have requested a list of these enforceable obligations and even volunteered to help in the process. Still, the city refuses to provide the list. Projects at risk include the Transbay Terminal, Hunterʼs Point Naval Shipyard, Treasure Island and the Mission Bay development. Together these are expected to create some 200,000 construction and other local jobs. Oakland launches petition to keep city jobs for city workers To get ahead of the upcoming city deficit and the cuts and layoffs projected to come with it, the City of Oakland chapter is circulating a petition to the city administrator, demanding that Oakland cut the outsourcing of city jobs instead so that current city employees can do the city's work. "We need everyone to sign on as soon as possible," chapter President Dwight McElroy said. "We have to stay vigilant if we are going to save our jobs and city services." The Live Wire Bloomberg Poll: Americans support unions ... and honoring a deal Bloomberg: "Americans Oppose Republican Attack on Unions in Poll Divided Over Benefits" Americans reject Republican efforts to curb bargaining rights of unions whose power they say is dwarfed by corporations, a Bloomberg National Poll finds. As battles rage between state workers and Republican governors in Wisconsin and Ohio, 63 percent don't think states should be able to break their promises to retirees, and respondents split over whether governors aim to balance their budgets or weaken unions that back Democratic foes, according to the poll conducted March 4-7. The poll shows that political challenges to government workers are failing to draw broad support from a public more concerned about unemployment than government deficits. ... About half say governors are unfairly targeting unions and 46 percent say public employees should be willing to accept benefit cuts. ... [One respondent said] budget deficits are a result of the economy and years of tax cuts, not the actions of public employees. "They're putting it now on the backs of their enemies even when these particular unions are willing to bargain," he says. Candidate Walmart launches first national campaign ad Following his explosive appearance at last month's Conservative Political Action Conference, Candidate Walmart (pictured) is releasing a national campaign commercial reminding Americans that he's the true conservative candidate, funneling money from the 99% to the 1% since 1952! "Super Tuesday proved one thing; conservatives are unhappy with the Republican field of candidates," said Candidate Walmart. "So I'm ramping up my campaign by launching my first national commercial, urging Americans to take a closer look at whether the GOP candidates truly share their values. The choice now is simple: stay with the status quo, or take a stand and vote for the candidate willing to champion corporations and the 1%. I've already taken a leading role in destroying the middle class in this country for the last 50 years, imagine what I can accomplish as leader of the free world!"
