A Union victory, The Battle of Gettysburg stopped Confederate General Robert E. Lee's second invasion of the North. More than 50,000 men fell as casualties during the three-day battle, making it the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. Gettysburg could never be forgotten, but its place in American memory was enhanced when President Abraham Lincoln visited the site of the battle four months later, in November 1863. Painting of Lincoln’s Lincoln was invited to attend the dedication of a “Gettysburg Address” new cemetery to hold the Union dead from the battle. He took the opportunity to give a speech which would provide a justification for the war. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address would become known as one of the best speeches ever delivered. The text of the speech is short yet brilliant, and in less than 300 words it expressed the nation’s dedication to the cause of the war. The famous Gettysburg Address begins, "Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” TRIP OVERVIEW This custom and exclusive tour will submerge the student of history into the significance and context of the most famous battle of the American Civil War. Conceived and guided by Speaker/Historian Dr. Judy Morley, this interactive, “boots-on-the-ground” tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield will provide valuable lessons in leadership, using examples such as how a chance encounter became an opportunity for victory; how an unknown theology professor from Maine used his instinct to save the Union Army; how the greatest general of the era could have avoided deadly battlefield miscalculations that led to the ultimate defeat of his cause; and how President Abraham Lincoln, in a few paragraphs, created meaning out of the battle and redefined America. This unique, one-of-a-kind tour includes 4-nights lodging at the historic Gettysburg Hotel; opening night cocktail reception with heavy appetizers and two drinks; one buffet breakfast, two continental breakfasts; three box lunches, and three unique dinners, including the Historic Dobbin House Alehouse and Restaurant, Est.
