Volunteering at École Sam Livingston School

Volunteering at Sam Livingston School, 2016-2017
Each year, Sam Livingston School and the Sam Livingston School Council require volunteers for the
many varied activities and events that take place at the school. These activities and events enrich
our school community and enhance our children’s learning experience for their duration at the
school. Our volunteers make a real difference – they simply make Sam a better place to be!
We Need You!
Volunteering is a great way to connect to the school community, as it brings families together, and,
its fun! Please consider donating even just one hour or perhaps more of your time to help out. What
a great way to see your children in action!
Volunteers are needed in three main areas – fun events, spirit-building efforts and fundraisers
organized by the school council; activities in and around the school; and help in the classroom.
Sam Livingston School Council (SLSC)
Association of Sam Livingston School Council (ASLSC)
SLSC and its fundraising arm, the ASLSC, are both comprised of volunteers. More information about
the role of each organization can be found on Sam's School Council website
at http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b354/council.htm. All parents and guardians are encouraged to attend
council meetings so that they can take part in the decision-making at our school.
In addition to an advisory role, we organize:
• Fun events for students such as Fun Lunch and Popcorn Days
• Spirit-building efforts for the community such as Movie Nights and the Halloween Dance
• Fundraising initiatives such as Entertainment Book sales and Casino Nights
Volunteers are an essential part of all council initiatives, and make a huge difference to your child's
learning experience. Council fundraising has provided enhancements such as laptop computers,
Smartboards, library materials, and Artists in Residence, such as Trickster.
At the School – the Learning Commons/Library and the Envirolab
The Learning Commons/Library requires volunteers for book fairs, which are held twice a year. The
Library also appreciates loans of interesting collections (such as shells, coins, postcards) to place in
their display cases for students to view.
Parent volunteers also help maintain the Envirolab, the natural area on the east side of the school.
Volunteers can assist by pulling weeds, pruning shrubs, and helping with the student Envirolab Club.
In the Classroom
Each class has a volunteer Room Parent, who acts as the liaison between the teacher and the
classroom volunteers. Volunteers are also required for any class field trips.
