POST-SECONDARY ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS
Alexander Rutherford Scholarships for
High School Achievement
The Alexander Rutherford Scholarships have been named in honour of Alexander Rutherford,
Alberta’s first Premier and Minister of Education. The Alexander Rutherford Scholarships for High
School Achievement recognize and reward exceptional academic achievement at the senior high
school level and encourage students to pursue post-secondary studies. The scholarships are based
on scholastic achievement in Grades 10, 11 and 12.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarships for High School Achievement must be Alberta
residents who have completed high school on or after September 30, 1980. In addition, they must be
enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program of at least one semester in length or be an
apprenticeship student. The minimum required average for consideration at each grade level is
calculated from marks on a valid Alberta high school transcript. A student need not have achieved
this average in all three grades or in all courses to qualify for a portion of the scholarship.
Note: Averages will not be rounded up for scholarship purposes. All courses must be completed prior
to commencing post-secondary studies. In addition, a lower level course cannot be retaken after
completing the corresponding higher level course.
Application Procedures
Apply by May 1st for post-secondary studies starting in the fall or apply by December 1st for postsecondary studies commencing in January.
Transcripts are not required for courses completed in Alberta. Students will be notified of the status of
their application in late August for September start date or January for January start date. Scholarship
funds are issued after the applicant’s enrollment is confirmed by the office of the Alberta Scholarship
programs.
The award will be disbursed in November for September start date and March for January start date
after Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund confirms full-time enrollment in post-secondary studies.
Students are asked to advise the office of Alberta Scholarship Programs of any changes to their
applications which could affect the receipt of their award, i.e. change of permanent home address,
delayed entry into post-secondary studies or a change in choice of institution.
