“Our Little Miracle”
Below is Zachary’s story, as told by his dad, Bryan.
Bryan and his wife, Vicki, welcomed Zachary into
the world in 2004. He is now served by therapists
from the Guilds’ School twice a week where he
receives physical, occupational, speech and cognitive
therapy.
“O
ur little miracle” is how we
referred to Zachary in a photo
st
on his 1 birthday. He really is a miracle and
we’d like to share his story.
Zachary was born on April 18, 2004 after
a normal and healthy pregnancy. Vicki had
labor induced three weeks early because of
elevated blood pressure. Other than that, the
birth and delivery went just fine. After
Zachary was delivered he amused the whole
room by peeing on the nurse. We all laughed
and knew he had a sense of humor. Five
minutes after Zachary was delivered, the nurse
mentioned that he appeared to be jaundiced.
In hindsight, this should have been the first
sign that something was wrong.
Two days later, a tired mom, dad, and
Zachary went home. Before being released,
however, we discussed with the doctor our
concerns about Zachary’s yellow skin color.
The doctor reassured us that this was
common, and to place Zachary near sunlight
and if the condition worsened to contact a
pediatrician within two weeks. Being first
time parents, we took the doctors advice and
went home with Zachary.
The first day home was exciting! We
were exhausted but proud to have a beautiful
baby boy. On the morning of the second day,

life as we knew it changed forever. Zachary’s
jaundice had worsened to the point that he
was almost orange. The whites of his eyes
were even yellow. He was not eating and was
extremely lethargic. Vicki immediately started
looking through books and trying to get
Zachary in to see the doctor. Luckily, our
pediatrician, Dr. Crum, was willing to see
Zachary as soon as we could get him to the
Rockwood Clinic. Dr. Crum took one look
at Zachary and said, “Let me make some
phone calls.” We started to suspect there was
more to Zachary’s condition than just his
orange coloring. Nurses and the lab tech
took blood samples from Zachary and started
making guesses as to how high his bilirubin
count was. Jaundice is caused by a high level
of bilirubin in the blood and tissues. We
heard 14, 15, 18, and we weren’t really sure
what they were talking about. Dr. Crum
returned and said, “Don’t panic but I want
you to take Zachary to Sacred Heart Pediatric

For me, a child of the 60’s, it
conjures up Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. and his moving speech that touched
us all so many years ago. We see the
birth of a child as a blessed event. An
event that reminds us of the miracle of
life and the possibilities that life
provides. This sense of hopefulness
carries with it the dream for the baby’s
development and the impact it has on
everyone around the developing child.
It’s like we all get another chance for a
new start, it gives us hope and
confidence in the future. When a
baby is born with a problem or a
developmental disability this hope and
confidence can be badly shaken. New
dreams must be visualized to

compensate for the real or perceived
change in the picture. The future is
impossible to predict but we are
hopeful. This is a condition of life
that becomes more apparent with the
passage of time. I think that is part of
the reason that older people have such
wisdom. They’ve lived long enough to
understand that life takes many twists
and turns. So often what appears to
be a setback is actually an opportunity
in disguise. People choose to see
things negatively or positively. As an
organization, the Guilds’ School has
chosen the latter and has made a
massive commitment to it. This
conviction of the heart guided our
founders and was the fuel that sent
and sustained them on the journey.
I hope you enjoy the annual
report. The past year has been a good
one. The school and its staff,
volunteers and donors helped many
children and families in a special and
concrete way. We continued to
improve the program and to plan for
the future. Volunteer Dr. Betty

A
t this time of year-end reflection,
the Spokane Guilds’ School is
proud to report another successful year.
Students and their parents continue to
receive excellent care and thoughtful
direction provided by the staff and
administration of the Guilds’ School. As
president of the board of directors and
proud parent of Blake, a Guilds’ School
graduate, I am humbled to be involved in
an organization with such a long list of
accomplishments and impressive group
of staff, administrators and volunteers.
My family has benefited greatly from the
goal of SGS: to help children like Blake
participate to the absolute limit of their
potential in our world. It has been our
wish since Blake’s birth to not only take
him along with us but to have him
actively participate in family activities.
Our three years with the SGS greatly
assisted us in this lifelong endeavor.
Results like those produced at
the SGS take resources. As a board of
directors, we keep constant vigil over our
financial future and while we are pleased
to report that our deficit has been
reduced, we strive to return to a nondeficit operating mode in the next fiscal
year. We continue to work closely with
the local school districts and the Health
Department to secure financing available
by “counting the kids”. Children
currently on school district roles that
require birth to three services will be
reimbursed by State of Washington
funding once contracts are established
between the school districts, the Health
Department and contractors such as the
SGS. As most districts around the state
are currently accessing these funds, we
look forward to finalizing these contracts
this year. While we are forever indebted
to the countless donors in our
community, we feel very responsible for
accessing all available funding prior to
asking for resources from private
individuals.
Many thanks to all of you that
donate your time, energy and financial
contributions to help move us forward in
our work with children with disabilities
in our community. The stories of
families presented during our Penny
Drive and in our quarterly VISION
newsletter showcase a fraction of the
many success stories of the SGS. We are
proud to play our part in each of these
stories and continue to be humbled by
the work of parents and families as they
strive to raise kids with unique
challenges.

Wilde Fl wers: Stories from the Guilds’ School Garden
“H

what the doctors
told Marie and
Jerry Hoppe the
day their son,
Noah, was born.
They had him

Debra Wilde,
you imagine?
SGS Board of Directors
Marie carried
Noah for 38
weeks, with no warnings, no signs of a
problem, and then POW! He won't live
through the night?! It all came tumbling
down so fast.
Marie had gestational diabetes,
but there were no signs during the
pregnancy that it was a problem. She
carried a very active baby for most of the
pregnancy, but grew scared when her
normally active baby slowed down, and
virtually quit kicking and moving. So, at
38 weeks, Marie went to the hospital. Her
baby's heart rate was way down. An
emergency C-section was scheduled and
baby Noah entered the world. Marie
recalls seeing Noah's big and beautiful
eyes, but with a fixed stare, as he was
whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU).
Fast forward...Noah miraculously
lived through the night and the next day.
Though he spent three weeks in the
NICU, Mom and Dad finally got to hold
their baby Noah at one week old.
Bittersweet, doctors told the Hoppe family
that their little Noah would probably never
walk or talk, and could be diagnosed with
cerebral palsy at age two to three. A brain
scan had shown damage equally on both
sides of the brain and doctors said that
over time these areas may or may not
recover.
Marie and Jerry were told the
reason Noah was born with problems was
because Marie's placenta was "old."
Damage resulted from the limited amount
of oxygen that Marie’s placenta was
allowing.
Big sister, Olena gives us a big grin as she hugs little
brother, Noah, close to her.
Wescombe to improve his motor skills.
Despite initial predictions, Noah walked at
16 months. He also loves being in a group
setting with several other children. Marie
shares, “He is making more noise now
than ever.” “Ish” is fish, “meow meow” is
cat and “ruff ruff” is dog. Noah knows ten
words, and signs as many.
The bottom line with Noah is
that he is making huge strides, he’s happy
and extremely loved by his family and the
SGS family. I trust mothers' instincts and
I believe Marie when she tells me,
"Something deep down tells me my son
has a strong drive and a will to live."
This drive is also apparent
throughout the Hoppe family. Marie and
Noah have gone to five different schools as
part of our Penny Drive, sharing Noah’s
story and teaching students about children
born with disabilities. They love it, and
according to Marie, the kids love seeing
Noah. The Hoppes are a big part of our
community awareness and I can't think of
a better spokesbaby than Noah.
Mom tells me he's her sunshine,
and that little Noah can put anyone in a
good mood. He wakes up with a smile and
can be heard bouncing up and down in his
crib. Though he says “mama” when he's
upset, he gets most excited when Dad
comes home. Little Noah runs, well, does
more skipping than running, to Dad for a
big irresistible hug. It’s easy to see, this is
one special family. As I end this article,
the love and closeness warms my heart.
Noah just came into the room wanting to

They are obviously very close and adorable
to watch… the giggling, the one on one eye
contact, its almost like they are in their

learns a lot from his big sister; she’s a
perfect role model.
While Noah does not have any
specific diagnosis, there is physical
evidence to support his disability. He is

thing she felt as a parent coming to the

August 2006
We were told it would be okay from
the doctor. Had we missed
something? Was this our fault? We
felt guilty and destroyed. But Zachary
received his first miracle in that he
had survived the night.
Zachary remained in the
NICU for a month undergoing
countless tests while he recovered. We
learned that he had damage to his
basal ganglia, the part of the brain that
controls motor function and
coordination. This is a condition
called Kernicterus that can be caused
by severe jaundice. And although
extremely rare, this condition is
preventable. Had Zachary’s jaundice
been treated earlier, he would not be
in the same place today. Doctors also
said that Zachary had lost his hearing.
We left the hospital exhausted,
confused and with an apnea monitor
to make sure he had no problems with
his breathing.
Just a few weeks after being
home, we were back at Sacred Heart
Children’s Hospital to evaluate what
was still happening with his bilirubin
levels – something in his body just
wasn’t working right. After a week in
the hospital and many tests including
a liver biopsy, we returned home
again. A couple days later, we were at
the doctor’s office – again. After this
visit, Dr. Crum was becoming
increasingly worried about Zachary
because his bilirubin levels were still
not dropping. A series of tests were
ordered and it was discovered that his
liver and gall bladder had been
damaged due to the extremely high
bilirubin levels. Zachary’s body was
just not able to get rid of the toxins.
So, we went to the Children’s Hospital
in Seattle to see Dr. Suskind.
Dr. Suskind, a specialist in
gastroenterology, reviewed Zachary’s
chart and told us they would have to
run more tests. They wanted to repeat
the liver biopsy as well as blood tests,
(Continued on page 8)

(Continued from page 7)
an ultrasound, and many other tests
trying to isolate the problem. While
awaiting the test results we took up
residence at the local Ronald
McDonald House. If Zachary’s liver
and gall bladder were not functioning
properly, they would need to perform
a procedure to connect his liver
directly to his small intestines, which
would mean that by the time he
reached 15 he would need a liver
transplant. Again, we were devastated.
After what we had been told, we fully
expected that Zachary would need this
surgery.
Dr. Suskind phoned us and
was beside himself as he explained that
he could not figure out how Zachary’s
insides basically fixed themselves and
started working again. He said he had
never seen anything like that happen,
and had no medical explanation for it.
We were in total disbelief when he
said we could go home, only needing
to have follow-up visits. Zachary’s
guardian angel was watching over him.
He had just received miracle number
two.
During this time Zachary had
also been seeing neurologists to
determine just how much brain
damage had actually occurred.
According to the doctors, it seemed as
if his brain wouldn’t be able to fix
itself. However, they were optimistic
that the brain would be able to remap
itself. They were not overly optimistic
that Zachary would ever be able to
walk or have a normally physically
functioning body. If any development
were to occur, it would be severely
delayed. On the bright side, the
cognitive portion of Zachary’s brain
was going to function normally, but
those skills would be hampered by the
slow development of his physical
motor skills.
August 2006
Meanwhile, a hearing
specialist started to investigate
Zachary’s hearing loss. Doctors and
specialists performed tests on him to
see if there was any damage to the
nerves in the ear. They could not find
anything physically wrong with the
ears themselves. So, doctors figured
Mom and Zachary celebrate his second birthday.
that there had been nerve damage and
Zachary’s hearing was non-existent or
greatly diminished. However, Zachary
had another trick up his sleeve for the
doctors. On a final test of Zachary’s
hearing, he proved to the doctors that
there was nothing at all wrong with his
hearing. He passed the hearing test
and that left the doctors again
scratching their collective heads
unsure of what to make of Zachary
and his hearing. We figured that he
was just tired of doctors and was
ignoring them. So, Zachary chalked
up yet another miracle. The kid was
three for four.
Zachary had to have weekly blood
draws at the hospital to measure his
liver function amongst other things.
He had to learn to eat and attempt to
sleep. He has strider (or as the doctors
describe it – a floppy airway). He
sounds at times like he isn’t breathing
or is gasping for air but we’re told that
he will hopefully outgrow this. This is
how we lived the first four months of
Zachary’s life.
Zachary started receiving early
intervention therapies at the Spokane
Guilds’ School when he was four
months old. Over the past two years,
he has made tremendous strides. He
went from not being able to hold his
head up at all, to having good strength
and being able to hold his head up a
majority of the time. He is just
beginning to do things that other
children are able to do when they are
only a few months old like grasping a
toy, or turning the pages of a book.
Although he is still unable to sit up by
himself, crawl or walk, his physical
disabilities certainly don’t limit his
mind. He is extremely smart and
knows exactly what is going on around
him. Just this week, he got his first
wheelchair and looked at us like
“what’s that for?” He’s not too sure of
it yet, but hopefully this will give him a
little more support in sitting and
independence in the long run. He
tries to talk, and babbles all the time.
He has an amazing sense of humor
and a great giggle. We are still not
sure of Zachary’s long-term life plan,
but we know if it’s anything like what
he’s done so far, he may have a few
more miracles in store.
We wanted to share Zachary’s
story so that others can be aware that
something as simple as a case of
jaundice can end up being very severe
and have profound lifelong affects.
We have been blessed with a
beautiful boy, whom we now know
was given to us for a reason. We have
been faced with continuing struggles,
but we keep plugging along. Our
family, our friends and our church
support us. Without all of that
support, we would not have survived.
We thank all who have helped: cover a
shift at work, baby-sit, given us time
off when they shouldn’t and most of
all prayed for our family. Thank you
from the bottoms of our hearts.

The More You Know… Failure to thrive
By Trina Schmid
What does it mean?
“Failure to thrive” is a term used with little ones that are not
growing typically. Failure to thrive does not, however, mean
failure to survive. More of a descriptor than a diagnosis,
failure to thrive (FTT) generally refers to a child falling below
the fifth percentile in weight and height for their age, or one
that is declining in growth in two major areas. These little
ones are malnourished. If they don’t grow for several months
within their first year, these babies will likely show signs of
physical, mental and emotional delays as well.1
Premature does not mean FTT…
A premature baby may certainly be at risk of FTT but the two
do not always go hand-in hand. “As long as the child is
growing along a curve with a normal interval growth rate, FTT
should not be diagnosed.”3 In fact, doctors will often refer to
a modified growth chart for premature infants, or children
with syndromes such as Turner’s, Down’s, Achondroplasia,
Prader-Willi, or Noonan’s, because they usually follow a
slightly different growth pattern.
Printable Growth Charts:
Importance of early intervention…
www.cdc.gov/growthcharts
According to the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at
Stanford, children with FTT “that are not treated for an
extended period of time may have difficulty ‘catching up’
developmentally and socially. About 50 percent of children
who experienced failure to thrive as an infant or young child
continue to have social and emotional problems or eating
problems later in life.” 2

District

Causes:
Many infants are simply undernourished. “With an energy
need that is almost triple that of adults (in calories per kg) it
becomes easier to understand how quickly infants can fall
behind on growth.”3 It is often termed organic failure to
thrive (OFTT) if poor growth is attributed to a medical
complication or illness. Non-organic failure to thrive
(NOFTT) has a psychosocial basis, where economic,
emotional, environmental or social factors, or a parent’s lack
of knowledge regarding their infant’s dietary needs, may result
in malnutrition. On a more physiological basis, one or more
of the following factors must be addressed: inadequate caloric
intake, inadequate absorption, excess metabolic demand, or
defective utilization.3

Physician. 2003; 09/01. www.aafp.org/aft/20030901.html.
Treatment…
To treat FTT, one must first identify the reason for it, and
then take necessary measures to correct it. The child will
undoubtedly require a high calorie diet to “catch up,” often
1½ times the suggested daily caloric intake required for their
desired weight. The expertise of physicians, nurses, dieticians,
speech/language pathologists and physical and occupational
therapists can help expedite this correction. These little ones
should be closely monitored for progress, but hospitalization
is generally only required in the most severe cases.
W
ith so many developmental disabilities, delays,
and rare syndromes, it’s not surprising that many
people are overwhelmed. For that very reason, we have
created “The More You Know”, a column that will focus
on a different diagnosis in every issue of Vision to aid
understanding and address the basic questions many
have never had the opportunity to ask.

Your help is needed to ensure no child is ever turned away
A
t the Guilds’ School, every effort is made to focus on our successes instead of our challenges. A child with
cerebral palsy, for example, may be unable to walk, but she is developing better coordination of her hands
and fingers. Another child may be unable to speak, but is learning sign language as a means of communication.
With all of our successes, we don’t always voice our needs and our concerns for the future.
As many as 80% of the families we serve at the Guilds’ School fall at or below the 200% poverty level. What
that means is that a great deal of the services we provide for these kids and families go uncompensated. Did you
know that even for families with insurance coverage, it is not unusual for the therapy benefit to run out before
the need for services expires? A family may have wonderful insurance coverage, but frequently the therapy
benefit is exhausted by July or August of the calendar year, leaving several months where services are provided,
but no fees are collected to pay for those services.
More and more, the Guilds’ School relies on the spirit of giving for which our donors are known. Because
we never turn a family away due to their inability to pay, we rely on the generosity of our donors to ensure

fund in the hopes that one day the Guilds’ School will not be so dependent on government funding sources
and private donations. Until that time, however, and as we work to build that fund, your contributions are
what keep us moving forward. Your contributions continue the existence of our program. Your contributions ensure we will never have to turn a
family away because of their inability to pay for services. On behalf of our families and our kids, thank you for your continued support.

for children with developmental disabilities. To get your card, call Julie Bailey

VISION
August 2006
Building a so lid future
For the kids of tomorrow
By Bobbie League
O
nce again the
development office staff
is busy putting together the pieces for
this newsletter. I have come to
appreciate the staff’s dedication to this
work because of their sincere desire for
you, our Spokane Guilds’ School
family, to always be connected to the
miracles occurring here at the School.
This article usually appears
near the end of the newsletter which I
think is very fitting. My responsibility
in Planned Giving is to help explore,
share, and educate individuals on the
many options available when planning
a gift that will come to the Spokane
Guilds’ School at the end of their
lives. I believe that sharing the stories
of some of our donors that have made
planned gifts is an excellent way to
showcase the many ways of giving.
Please let me introduce you to
our neighbor and friend, Bill.
Recently I had the pleasure of visiting
with Bill who lives across the street
from the School. We first met Bill a
number of years ago when he stopped
by the School to use our phone. He
was calling a taxi because he needed a
ride to pick up his car from the shop.
Tracy Penna responded, “No need for
a taxi, I will be happy to take you to
get your car”, thus began our
friendship with Bill.
Bill has lived in Spokane
almost all of his life. He was born in
1918 and attended Bryant and Willard
Elementary Schools, Havermale Junior
High, and North Central High School.
After high school he ventured to Los
Angeles, CA where he lived for 19
years. Bill was always fascinated with
the theater and worked his way up
through the ranks to manage half a
dozen theaters in LA during the
forties, two of which were the Pico and
the Wiltern. He met many stars over
the years and found the life in the
theater very exciting. He returned to
Spokane in 1957 where he has
remained.
In the early years of our
friendship with Bill he would come
over for a visit with Barb Eliason and
Cyndi Lucke, the front office staff, and
to see the children. He told me, “I
loved visiting the school because
everyone was so positive and the
children always seemed so happy and
it made me feel happy. The children
did not even know what their situation
was; they just wanted to have fun”.
The tide has turned and now
the staff goes over to visit Bill and to
help out when and where they can.
Bob Edens, maintenance manager,
and his assistant Joey Crane most
recently took time to mow Bill’s yard
and trim his shrubs. Julie Bailey,
development assistant, does not let a
holiday or birthday go by without a
card, signed by all of the staff, and a
small gift for Bill. He is now confined
to a wheelchair, has poor eyesight, and
is hard of hearing, however, his mind
remains as sharp as a tack. He can tell
you stories of growing up in Spokane
and how the city has changed. He can
tell you information about the
Ridpath burning down. He reminisces
about the tea dances he attended at
the Davenport and how much he loves
the big band sound. Bill loves to share
stories about sneaking into the
Gonzaga University football games as a
youth. He remembers final scores of
games and who GU played. Bill has
been a good neighbor and friend and
is a part of our SGS family. Bill has
no family living in Spokane but over
the years has shared pictures of his two
daughters, one living in Alaska and the
other in California.
Bill’s gesture of philanthropic
generosity came to us in 2003 when he
notified us of his intentions to leave a
gift for the School in his will. This
gesture of his planned gift is a
thoughtful and caring expression of
his trust and faith in the work that the
Spokane Guilds’ School has
performed each and every day for the
past forty-six years and will continue to
do thanks to generous donors like Bill.
We are grateful for individuals like Bill
who continue to help us build a future
for SGS children and their families.
I know all of you receiving this
newsletter have been donors in the
past, are currently donors, or perhaps
will become donors in the future and
for this we are most grateful. We need
all of the help we can get to keep our
doors open to the children we serve. I
can thank all of you on behalf of the
children and their families because
they are experiencing the gift of your
generosity first hand. Again, thank
you for Keeping the Dream Alive for our
children.

Child Profile
By Julie Bailey
Shiloh started attending the
S weet
Spokane Guilds' School when she
Visit us on-line
www.guildschool.org
was just two months old. In the six
short months since that time, she has
made great progress.
Speech therapist Lisa Norfolk
has been working with Shiloh since the
beginning and is helping to improve her
feeding and communication skills.
Because Shiloh is visually impaired, Lisa
cues her to open her mouth by touching
a spoon or cup to her lower lip. Lisa is
also helping Shiloh to vocalize using
consonant and vowel sounds. “She has
already exceeded our expectations by
meeting the initial goals that we had set
for her”, shares Norfolk.
Occupational therapist Virginia
Knight has also had the pleasure of
working with Shiloh. “She just keeps
improving”, shares Virginia. Shiloh’s mom,
Suzanne, is credited with her daughter’s
successes. “Suzanne expects
improvements and does not give up on her
daughter”, says Knight. Since starting
therapy with Virginia, Shiloh has been
working on rolling over, reaching for
objects, holding them in both hands, and
tapping them together. This adorable little
girl is particularly fond of toys that have
lights and music.
Alicia Green, physical therapist,
has only been seeing Shiloh for three
weeks, but has already noticed progress in
lifting her head while leaning on her
elbows, and sitting upright by using her
hands for balance. “Shiloh is very happy,
motivated, and easy to work with”, says
Alicia.
All three therapists agree that
Shiloh’s mom, Suzanne, is wonderful. She
is willing to try anything that the therapists
suggest. Lisa states, “Mom is phenomenal
at knowing what her daughter needs and
pushing her to do all that she can within
her ability level”. There’s no doubt that
Shiloh will have a very happy and fulfilling
life with that kind of mother’s love
supporting her.
