Writing Narrative Texts
This English unit addresses the narrative text type; specifically, how to write an engaging narrative text. The
students will listen to, read and interpret a novel from the fantasy genre showing understanding of character
development in relation to plot and setting. They create the first chapter of a fantasy novel, depicting
contrasting fantasy characters in relation to setting and plot.
MATHS
 Number and place value - factors and multiples, multiplication using the split and compensate strategy, a
written strategy for addition and subtraction, round and estimate to check the reasonableness of answers,
strategies that are appropriate to different problems
 Fractions and decimals – unit fractions, add and subtract simple fractions with the same denominator.
 Using units of measurement - time concepts, 24-hour time, perimeter and area of rectangles.
 Chance - possible outcomes, equally likely outcomes, probabilities of outcomes using fractions, conduct a
chance experiment; investigate the fairness of a game.
GEOGRAPHY
SCIENCE
 Data representation and interpretation - numerical and categorical data, interpreting data, appropriate
methods to record data
Survival in the environment
In this unit students will examine the structural features and behavioural adaptations that assist living things to
survive in their environment. Student will investigate how plants and animals survive in their environments,
including those that survive in extreme environments. This knowledge will be used to design creatures with
adaptations that are suitable for survival in prescribed environments.
Exploring how people and places affect one another
In this unit, students extend their mental map of the world with a focus on Europe and North America. Students
learn to identify and describe the relative location of places and to complete maps using cartographic
conventions. Students learn how climate and landforms influence the human characteristics of places and how
human actions influence the environmental characteristics of places. The impact of human actions on the
environmental characteristics of places in two countries in Europe and North America is further explored
through a focus on examples and a case study.

MUSIC
Students will be exploring dynamics and expression and using their aural skills to identify pieces of music from
films. They will also learn how to compare music from a variety of segments of a movie and make meaning from
the music.
Students will begin exploring a more in depth use of language, discussing names, likes and dislikes and culture,
in their What’s in a name? unit. They will also have a focus on Hiragana this term.
This term our focus is on fitness in preparation for the end of term cross country and the following athletics
season. Students will be encouraged to develop a plan and encouraged to continue this daily at home during
athletics season.
Reading, Spelling, Number Facts and Maths revision will be the focus for homework this term.

MATHS
 Number and place value - prime and composite numbers, mental and written strategies to solve problems
involving all four operations.
 Fractions and decimals - Order and compare fractions with related denominators, add and subtract fractions
with related denominators, calculate the fraction of a given quantity, and solve problems involving the
addition and subtraction of fractions.
 Chance - Represent the probability of outcomes as a fraction or decimal and conduct chance experiments.
 Data representation and interpretation - Revise different types of data displays, interpret data displays,
investigate the similarities and differences between different data displays, identify the purpose and use of
different displays, and identify the difference between categorical and numerical data.
