Academic Advising Services EOP functions as the academic home for our Undeclared majors (primary advising responsibility) and provides supplemental advising for our declared majors (major department has the primary advising responsibility for declared majors). EOP advisors will be facilitating a number of advising seminars during the Summer Bridge Program. Students will be assigned an EOP advisor beginning fall quarter. Life in the Residence Hall All Summer Bridge students will stay in air-conditioned double rooms in a campus residence hall. Your student will share a room with another student. Visitations and Curfew All Summer Bridge students MUST observe a 10:00 p.m. curfew in the residence hall. Students may be in any part of the residence hall (lounge, study room, etc.) at this time, but they must be in the building. All Summer Bridge students must be in their own rooms by 11:00 p.m. The Resident Advisors on duty will conduct room checks to ensure all students are where they should be. Summer Bridge is a “CLOSED CAMPUS” program. In order to ensure students’ safety and for the students to obtain the greatest benefit from the program, participants will stay on campus from Sunday through Thursday. Families may briefly visit their student’s room at check-in and check-out with approval of a staff member. There are no visitation hours during the program. Closed on Fridays The campus will be closed and no classes will be held on Fridays during the summer. Checking Out Students are expected to check out of the residence hall every Thursday between 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Students living long distances must submit a request for Weekend Stay consideration during the residential portion of Summer Bridge by the deadline for the Summer Bridge application. Renaissance Scholars students should contact Makeda Bostic at 909.869.3169, with any questions about Weekend Stay. 2 Supervision In addition to the Residence Life Coordinator, Resident Advisors (upper-division students hired to oversee the program participants) are assigned to the floors to enforce the rules and regulations of the housing department, create and supervise recreational activities for the residents, and act as mentors to the students. Dining Facilities Meals are served in Los Olivos Dining Commons. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are offered Mondays through Thursdays; however, no dinner will be provided on Thursdays and Sundays through the Summer Bridge program. Dinner for students will be provided on Sunday, June 18 (Opening Day) only. Study Rooms A “Study Room” is available so that students can study without interruption. Computers are available in the library and at the 24-Hour Computer Commons. There is a charge for printing; however, students are encouraged to bring their own paper. Students may wish to consider bringing a computer (and printer) if they have one available. However, Summer Bridge is not responsible for any equipment that may be lost at the residence hall. Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) The Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and the California Educational Code set requirements which protect the privacy of students concerning the records maintained by the campus. Therefore, the only people who have access to student records are the student and campus officials who have legitimate need for the information. Parents will not be given information regarding student’s academic progress by any campus employee. Parental Support For most students, college is an exciting time filled with personal growth and intellectual discovery. However, the experience can also be confusing and, at times, overwhelming for students. For this reason, it is important for families to be supportive of their students as they venture through this experience on the path to educational advancement. You can support your student by doing the following: Take time to talk to your student: Believe it or not, your student would really appreciate you taking time to simply talk about his/her college experience. This simple act will let your student know that you care about his/her education. Don’t be too hard on your student: Please keep in mind the many changes your student will experience during the first year of his/her college experience. It is recommended that your student receive support and guidance, not criticism, as he/she adjusts to his/her new environment. Be aware of services on campus that can support your student’s learning: Cal Poly Pomona offers a variety of support services (academic, social, health, financial aid) to help your student through college. Both parent and student would benefit from learning about these campus services. Above all, remember that when it comes down to it, the love and support that a student receives from his/her family can make all the difference!
