Marjory Douglas was the heroine of the Everglades, a unique environment in Florida. Many animals make their
home in this wetland region. Nevertheless, for years the Everglades were being drained off for buildings and
roads. The water was polluted. So Douglas wrote a book, The Everglades River of Grass. In it she explained why
the Everglades were important and should be protected. In 1969, Douglas started an organization called the
Friends of the Everglades. The Friends kept an airport from being built there!

Thrust is the force which moves an object through the air. It is generated by different propulsion/ propeller
systems and is based on Newton’s Third Law of Motion – for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Propulsion/ Propeller Systems: in a bird - the wings; in a glider – the hand throwing it or gravity; in a jet - the
engine; and in a plane it’s the propeller.
Responsibilities of MLAs and Cabinet Ministers
MLAs:






Gravity/ Weight – the force that pulls
objects toward the center of the Earth.
For example, jump in the air and try to
stay there.
Lift – the force that overcomes gravity to
raise the object. For example, blow over
the top of a piece of paper placed on
your lower lip.
Thrust – the force that overcomes drag to move things forward. For example, fill a balloon with air and let it go.
Where did the balloon go? Where did the air go?
Drag – the force that resists the object from moving forward. For example, open an umbrella, hold it behind you,
and run. It will feel much like you are running against the wind.

Birds
Insects
 Lightweight, smooth feathers (reduces
weight/ gravity and drag)
 Beak (reduces weight/ gravity)
 Enlarged breastbone for flight muscle
attachment (enhances thrust)
 Hollow bones (reduces weight/ gravity)
 Rigid skeleton for flight muscle
attachment (enhances thrust)
 Wing shape (enables lift)
 Lightweight, streamlined body (reduces
weight/ gravity and drag)
 Direct Mechanism - Flight muscle directly
act on each wing (enhances thrust)
 Indirect Mechanism – flight muscles
distort thorax shape which affects the
wings (enhance thrust)
 2 sets of wings that are thin and
transparent (reduces weight/ gravity)
 Exoskeleton (reduces weight/ gravity)
LG vs. PG Elections
LG
 Count ballots based on person/
candidate
 Pay for your own campaign
 Vote for mayor and councilors
BOTH
 Vote at polling station
 Same electoral process
 Have to be a resident, 18 or
older
PG
 Count ballots based on political
party
 Political party pays for campaign
 Vote for MLA in each
constituency
 1 MLA per 87 constituents

Streamlining is done to make an object more aerodynamic which means that it will be able to travel through air
with the least resistance (drag) possible.
Types of School Boards – Public, Separate and Francophone* (publicly funded…get funds from the prov govt)
Services – provide bussing, ensure curriculum is taught; make school decisions, decide on a budget
Role of Trustees (elected) – make decisions on behalf of school boards, appoint a Superintendent to carry out
decisions.
Role of Superintendent (appointed/hired) – ensure decisions made by school board are carried out, manage
budget, staffing, ensure schools have what they need.
