After all, there is nothing else that matters in life. So, here are a number of quotes from saints on becoming a saint. This is from https://catholicquotations.com/becoming-a-saint/. Become a saint, and do so quickly. Saint John Paul the Great Be not afraid! Open wide the doors to Christ! Saint John Paul the Great It is a dangerous thing to be satisfied with ourselves. Saint Teresa of Ávila Those who risk all for God will find that they have both lost all and gained all. Saint Teresa of Ávila You cannot be half a saint. You must be a whole saint or no saint at all. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux Why don’t you give yourself to God once and for all…really… NOW! Saint Josemaría Escrivá Follow the saints, because those who follow them will become saints. Pope Saint Clement I You will not see anyone who is truly striving after his spiritual advancement who is not given to spiritual reading. Saint Athanasius of Alexandria Our perfection does not consist of doing extraordinary things, but to do the ordinary well. Saint Gabriel Possenti O my God, teach me to be generous, to serve you as you deserve to be served, to give without counting the cost, to fight without fear of being wounded, to work without seeking rest, and to spend myself without expecting any reward, but the knowledge that I am doing your holy will. Amen. Saint Ignatius of Loyola Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will, and being just what God wants us to be. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux The harm that comes to souls from the lack of reading holy books makes me shudder… What power spiritual reading has to lead to a change of course, and to make even worldly people enter into the way of perfection. Saint Padre Pio One earns paradise with one’s daily task. Saint Gianna Molla May God bless and Mary keep you all and give us the grace to all become saints! Fr. June 1978 I was born at Stevens Point, Wisconsin on September 21, 1944, the first child of Arnold and Lorraine Miller. I attended grade school at the local rural school (eight grades in one room with one teacher). I saw my first Christian Brother when I entered Pacelli High School in Stevens Point as a freshman in 1958. There were eleven Brothers there that year. Due to their collective good influence and Brother Florian Donnatelli’s unorthodox strong-armed methods or recruiting, I decided to join the Junior Novitiate the following year. My first look at the big world came in September of 1959 when I left the farm for Glencoe via Chicago. In one day, I left the State of Wisconsin for the first time, took my first train ride, and saw a building over four stories high. I took Glencoe more or less in stride, and I preferred working in the chicken coop to playing field games—that got me a few points with the Visitor (Brother Philip). I spent my second year in the Juniorate at Christian Brothers Pre in Saint Paul. There were 36 of us, and we attended classes at Cretin High School. I believe I am the last surviving member of that historic group. I graduated from the Glencoe Juniorate in 1962, made my Postulancy in Winona, and took the Habit in Glencoe. After finishing my Novitiate in Winona in 1963, I entered the Winona Scholasticate. I majored in Modern Languages (Spanish/English) at Saint Mary’s College where I earned a B.A. degree in May of 1966. I was sent to Cretin a semester before graduation to take the place a sick Brother. I stayed there for three and a half years. I taught Spanish most of the time while at Cretin. I also was Quartermaster, found and coach of the soccer team, and maintenance supervisor. In 1968 I received a N.D.E.A. grant to study Spanish at the University of Dayton. After that intensive summer session, I began to prepare for my work in Nicaragua. I arrived in Bluefield’s in July of 1969. After one semester in the high school, I spent the following year in the grade school teaching sixth grade. After that I spent two more years in the high school. While in Bluefield’s I did a lot of work on the new Brothers’ residence. I also ran the bookstore and started a soccer team that still exists. I spent all of 1973 finishing up a M.A.T. degree in Spanish that I had begun years before. I arrived in Puerto Cebezas, Nicaragua, in March of 1974. During my first three years here, besides teaching and doing some administrative work I designed, financed, built, and equipped) with the help of the Nicaraguan government) an industrial arts/vocational education complex worth about $175,000 in United States currency. Last year I became Principal of Instituto Nacional Bartolome Colon, the government-owned high school we operate here. This year we have an enrollment of 550 students in a five-year program. I have also found time to reorganize and retrain the defunct local Volunteer Fire Department. I now am the local fire chief. Since I have had quite a bit of experience in building construction, the Nicaraguan Government recently asked me to supervise the construction of ten new rural grade schools being build in the region. I find a lot of satisfaction working among the very poor here in Nicaragua. Brother James Alfred Miller, F.S.C. June 1, 1978 On February 13, 1982 B r oth er Jam es Miller w as patch ing an outside wall for the Indian House and Farm in Huehuetenango Guatemala. In this Spanish-speaking country, the people called him Hermano Santiago. He glanced up casually from his work and saw a speeding car heading towards him. Quickly, Brother James pushed aside the Indian youth helping him. This was his last action. Four hooded gunmen leaned from the car as it sped past and shot Brother James in the neck and chest. An American sister—a nurse—was at his side in minutes only to confirm that Brother James was dead. “He died for what he was and what he stood for,” Brother Cyril said, “a Christian educator, an apostle of the poor and the underprivileged, and a worker for justice and social change.” Bishop Freking summed up the life of Brother James in these words: “He was a witness of Christ’s love and of his teaching in faith on the dignity of people and their right to freedom and justice. He was not afraid to take a stand on behalf of the rights of the poor. He was an example and an inspiration for us to continue our own efforts on behalf of justice even though we may be criticized for them.” Please join us at Mass on Monday, February 13th @ 6:00 p.m. here at Sacred Heart in remembrance of the 35th Anniversary of Brother Miller’s death.
