The beds have been custom-designed for The Blue Train. A butler pulls them out, already made, from a space in the suite wall, converting the lounge into a comfortable bedroom. White cotton sheets and goose down duvets and Blue Train Classic pillows are the standard linen throughout the train. Wardrobes with hangers and a writing desk are also included. All suites are equipped with telephone, television monitor, and individually controlled air-conditioning. A video channel allows guests to access short documentaries about the area through which the train is traveling. The suites are fitted with water-cooled air-conditioning system. The train departs the station at 08h30. En-route to Cape Town, stop in Kimberly for an off-the-train excursion. Kimberly was once the epicenter of a worldwide diamond rush. This city's checkered history is inextricably linked with the romance of those rare and beautiful stones. Here The Blue Train guests are cordially invited to disembark, take a tour through the streets of modern day Kimberly, to visit the Kimberly Mine Museum and the “Big Hole.” The Blue Train luxury coach is used to transport guests; alternatively they can be taken on an historic electric tram when it is available. Step back into a world of pioneers and adventurers, circa 1880. Marvel at the sheer magnitude of the "Big Hole," the largest hole in the world excavated by hand. At a replica of an alluvial-diamond digger, try your luck at panning and possibly find a diamond of your very own! Follow on the northbound tracks of Cecil John Rhodes, who dreamed of a railroad from Cape to Cairo. Pass through the wine lands of the fertile Hex River valley, in the shadow of imposing mountains, up and inland to the endless sweeping landscapes of the Karoo. The train arrives in the historic town of Matjiesfontein. This excursion is approximately 45 minutes in duration and guests will visit the famous Lord Milner Hotel and the Old Car Museum. On arrival at Matjiesfontein guests are invited for a glass of sherry at the bar. The Victorian buildings and original nineteenth century London lampposts impart to the traveler, the uncanny sense of entering a colonial time warp – an oasis suspended in a different age.
