'story'. Dating back to 1933, The Blue Train has played host to numerous celebrities, Kings and Queens and the
staff have many tales to tell to enliven the evenings. In 1997 the train became fully modernized.

Facilities on Board: The elegant lounge car with its large windows allows for panoramic views of the passing
countryside. The interior, resplendent with original works of South African art adorning the walls, plush and comfortable
couches and bouquets of flame lilies complementing the plush décor, makes the lounge car the ideal setting for sharing
an aperitif with fellow guests, an interlude between meals, or after-dinner conversation over coffee. The club car has the
relaxed atmosphere of a gentlemen's club, with card tables, a small library and a fully-equipped bar. Guests can watch a
short film about the train's route or enjoy a cognac before retiring for the night. As an added treat, indulge in the English
ritual of high tea, served every afternoon at your leisure. All meals are freshly prepared on board the train by executive
chefs. Menus feature a selection of local cuisine from Karoo lamb and ostrich fillet to Knysna oysters accompanied by
award-winning cultivars from the Cape Winelands, all serving as the perfect complement to the landscape through
which you are traveling. Carefully selected South African wines complement the gourmet cuisine served on The Blue
Train.
Accommodations: With interiors created by a leading interior architectural design company, The Blue Train will rival
many a five-star hotel in terms of elegance, grace, comfort, and style. The suites have been superbly redesigned to offer
discerning guests the best that modern technology and superior craftsmanship can provide. Each Blue Train suite has a
fully appointed en-suite, featuring marble vanity basins, marble wall and floor tiles, gold fittings, and a choice of shower
or bath. The beds have been custom-designed for The Blue Train. A butler pulls them out, already made, from a space in
the suite wall, converting the lounge into a comfortable bedroom. White cotton sheets and goose down duvets and

pillows are the standard linen throughout the train. Wardrobes with hangers and a writing desk are also included. All
suites are equipped with telephone, television monitor, and individually controlled air-conditioning. A video channel
allows guests to access short documentaries about the area through which the train is traveling. The suites are fitted
with water-cooled air-conditioning system. Each suite has its own fresh air intake and individual coolant system. The
passages are also air-conditioned with the same systems. Both suites and passages have the temperature adjusters and
air speed regulators for individual preferred setting. During cold periods, all the systems are provided with heating
cycles, not only from the air conditioning unit but also via under floor heating. Guests may choose between deluxe and a
luxury accommodation.
Deluxe Suites:
The Deluxe suites feature either twin beds with a shower, or double beds with a bathtub and handheld shower.
Luxury Suites:
The luxury suites extend your personal domain by more than a meter, and the twin or double-bed suites offer
deep, long baths for slow, luxuriant soaking. The suites extend the choice of radio and movie channels even
further by including a private digital entertainment center and an inviting selection of music CDs and movies on
DVD.

Day 1
Embark: Pretoria, South Africa • Kimberly
07h30: Board The Blue Train in the jacaranda city of Pretoria - the administrative capital of South Africa - and
travel south through farmlands and along the “golden arc,” visible only by the mining shafts in the distance.
The train departs the station at 08h30.
En-route to Cape Town, stop in Kimberly for an off-the-train excursion. Kimberly was once the epicenter of a
worldwide diamond rush. This city's checkered history is inextricably linked with the romance of those rare
and beautiful stones. Here The Blue Train guests are cordially invited to disembark, take a tour through the
streets of modern day Kimberly, to visit the Kimberly Mine Museum and the “Big Hole.” The Blue Train luxury
coach is used to transport guests; alternatively they can be taken on an historic electric tram when it is
available. Step back into a world of pioneers and adventurers, circa 1880. Marvel at the sheer magnitude of
the "Big Hole," the largest hole in the world excavated by hand. At a replica of an alluvial-diamond digger, try
your luck at panning and possibly find a diamond of your very own!
Board The Blue Train once more and continue on to a southbound journey into the heartland of the Great
Karoo. Enjoy an elegant dinner and overnight on the train. Blue Train (LD)

Arrive Cape Town
Awaken to the sight of vineyards and orchards as you descend through mysterious and beautiful valleys and
mountains, such as Drakenstein, Slanghoek and Elandskloof, towards Cape Town's imposing and instantly

recognizable Table Mountain, sentinel and gateway to the African continent. Arrival time into Cape Town is

NORTHBOUND ITINERARY: FROM CAPE TOWN TO PRETORIA
Day 1
Embark: Cape Town, South Africa • Matjiesfontein
The train departs Cape Town station at 8h30. Follow on the northbound tracks of Cecil John Rhodes, who
dreamed of a railroad from Cape to Cairo. Pass through the wine lands of the fertile Hex River valley, in the
shadow of imposing mountains, up and inland to the endless sweeping landscapes of the Karoo. The train
arrives in the historic town of Matjiesfontein. This excursion is approximately 45 minutes in duration and
guests will visit the famous Lord Milner Hotel and the Old Car Museum. On arrival at Matjiesfontein guests are
invited for a glass of sherry at the bar. The Victorian buildings and original nineteenth century London
lampposts impart to the traveler, the uncanny sense of entering a colonial time warp – an oasis suspended in a
different age.
Board the Blue Train to continue the journey northward into the interior. Enjoy an elegant dinner and
overnight on the train. Before you drift off to sleep, glance through the window at a sky filled with a trillion

Arrive Pretoria
When you awake, you will be approaching the mining centers on the Gold Reef, and will soon end your
journey in the jacaranda city - Pretoria. Approximate arrival time is 12h50. (B)

 These luxurious journeys are made possible by two Blue Train sets. The first train accommodates 74 guests in 37
suites. The second accommodates 58 guests in 29 suites and features a conference or observation car at the
back of the train.
 The trains travel at a speed of 90 kilometers per hour (58.2 mph). Both are 336 meters (433 yards) long and
consist of 17 & 16 carriages respectively, 10 & 8 of which are for the use of the guests.
