Here’s the idea
The possessive form of a noun shows ownership or
relationship.
Examples:
Ownership >> I held Cory’s camera as she tied her shoes.
Relationship >> Rick’s parents met us at the train station.
You may use possessive nouns in place of longer phrases.
Example: I went to the home of my friend.
I went to my friend’s home.
Spelling Rules for
Possessives
Singular Possessive Nouns
To form the possessive of a singular noun, add an apostrophe
and –s … even if the singular noun ends in an –S!
Example: Charles becomes Charles’s
Plural Possessive Nouns
Plurals are a little more trouble …
If the plural noun ends in –s, like boys … you just add an
apostrophe by itself.
Example: boys becomes boys’
If the plural noun ends in something else, like children or
geese, you add an apostrophe and an –s.
Example: children becomes children’s … and geese becomes
geese’s
Do not confuse plurals and possessives. Do not use an
apostrophe to make a plural!
