Mrs. Herbert—Rm.209 7TH GRADE ENGLISH/WRITING DISCLOSURE Welcome to Mrs. Herbert’s 7th Grade English/Writing! I am thrilled to be your teacher at Sunset Junior High! Through writing and reading, our goal this year in English and Basic Writing is to become a community of writers and readers who work together in an environment of trust, respect, hard work, and fun as we learn and apply the habits of effective writers and readers. Curriculum: The world of literature can take you places! Contact for Mrs. Herbert: Phone: 801-402-6700 Email: caherbert@dsd mail.net Reading: Writing: Grammar: A variety of assignments will focus on the elements of literature, poetry, comprehension, inference, analyzing, theme, and vocabulary. Various writing genres will be assigned. The focus will be on introductions, organization, transitions, cohesion, dialogue, word choice, conclusions, etc. for argumentative, informative/explanatory, and narrative. The focus will be on spelling, clauses, phrases, comma usage, root words, punctuation, and capitalization. Independent Reading: Students are expected to read at least 50 pages per week. Students must have a book in class EVERYDAY. Weekly and random book checks will be done. Each book check will be worth 5 points. If a student does not have a reading book in class at that time, a 0 will be given and those points cannot be made up. Books must be grade appropriate. Required Reading: Students will be required to read one book each term from the following list. These books will be available in the school library, or you may obtain your own copy. “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” ― Stephen King After reading the book, each student will fill out the Independent Reading Graphic Organizer and take a test on the book (See me for both). Cell phones must be off and away during instruction time unless we use them for educational purposes. Late Work/Absent Work Policy Assignments are considered late if they are handed in after I call for and add them to the class folder. Work without a name may be claimed from the no-name board and turned in with a Grace Coupon attached. However, you will get two (2) Grace Coupons per term. Turn in the assignment within one week of the due date with the Grace Coupon attached. *Final writing assignments are not included in the Grace Coupon policy. Absent work must be made up. It is the student’s responsibility to check the “Absent Archive” binder to find out what was missed. You have 5 straight school days to turn in any absent work for on -time credit. If you are absent when an assignment is due, you must hand it in the day you return.
