Stories from the Office of Advancement at Pacific Northern Academy One Vision. All Students. Every Day. Dear Linda, What Does PNA Mean To YOU? PNA is clear about its priorities: excellence in academics, focus on character, strength in community, joy in learning. But then there are smaller, more particular things that each teacher, parent and student sees in PNA that makes it their school of choice. All woven together, these "personality traits" ensure that PNA is a vibrant, healthy, dynamic and successful school. What is that spark for you? For me, it's watching EKers sit in the Library hallway with their freshly checked-out books, eagerly discussing their choices with their friends and showing any passers-by their fabulous finds. Hey Krystal, Whatcha doing? Ohhh, THAT'S why you've got that big, big smile on your face -- you're processing MORE application, tour, assessment and enrollment forms! And there's MORE? Oh RIGHT! Re-enrollment contracts were due on Monday! And you want to remind people to get theirs in? OK, we can help. HEY FOLKS! Please get your contracts in! Most of you have, but not all, so here's a nudge. Nudge. It's dedicated teachers who are devoted to learning with kids, finding the joy in the process together. NEXT WEEK IS SPIRIT WEEK! Monday 3/25/13: Mismatch Day Stripes and plaids, sheepskin and sequins, sew your own half and half suit. Tuesday 3/26/13: Superhero Day Let your inner Mr. Awesome or Ms. Fantabulous shine through! Capes and emblems are all the rage. Wednesday 3/27/13: Pirate Day Arrrgghhh! Thursday 3/28/13: 1960's Day Get Smart or Gomer Pyle. It's all groovy, baby! It's the collaborative approach that elevates understanding for all. Friday 3/29/13: Pajama Day Footie PJ's and teddy bears. It doesn't get any more dressed down than this! If students do not want to dress up for Spirit Week, that's okay! Wear regular uniform day clothes Monday through Thursday, and casual clothes on Friday. Like the dress code outlines, no aspect of a student's appearance should call excessive attention to him/her, nor should a student's appearance be a distraction to the classroom environment. All clothes must be appropriate length (mid-thigh standing, sitting, walking, etc.) and refrain from graphic images or inappropriate content. Clothing and accessories must be on before students arrive at school. Students will wear their dress-up day clothes the entire day. It's a dynamic music and drama program that builds confidence on stage, tunes the ear, engages rhythm -all things that intrinsically enhance kids' ability to process numbers, letters and movement. (In addition, of course, to building a love and appreciation of music!) Want to know more about PNA's priorities and plans? The Board of Trustees' recently created 5 year strategic plan is a good place to start. You can go to the PNA website to see it. 2626 Abbott Update: Progress is apace in the new building. All rooms are roughed in, wiring is in. Dr. Cohen and Ms. Boyechko went this week to approve finishes, and the entire faculty went on a tour to get to know their new home, and start plotting! 550 Bragaw Update: We are very pleased to announce that we have signed a lease with the Alaska Native Cultural Charter School to take residency this summer. They are thrilled to have a campus that better serves their mission, and we are thrilled to be their landlords! Congratulations: We would like to congratulate the Board of Trustees on completing this important step towards PNA's fiscal sustainability and strength. Thank You! A very special thank you goes to Board Chair Marty Weiser, who has shepherded, chased, orchestrated and generally sweated over this arduous but very rewarding and necessary work. Really, there aren't words enough. It's an immersive art program that trains the eye and the hand, develops processing and problem solving skills, and accesses the whole brain. Love what you see? Thank You, Thank you! As the Director of Admission, I have the privilege of interacting with prospective families as an ambassador for PNA. Every time I give a tour, I live out an entire school year in an hour and am reminded of why I love PNA. Our children shine because individual ability and aptitude are honored in the core subject areas of math, reading, and writing. Students develop a deep understanding of the world around them through our engaging approach to science and social studies instruction. There are opportunities to learn through the senses - to create, to sing, to dance. Not to mention all of our hallmark events: the Fall Festival, Service Day, Brown Bag Concerts, the Science Fair, Field Day, and This year, our book fair is helping the library get ready to move. We will be culling the stacks as aggressively yet prudently as possible. You can trim your stacks too! Bring your books in! Used books will all be under $1, so you can fill your stacks right back up and keep the readers in your family happily busy. We also encourage everyone to participate in our Commemorative Book Program, which is how we bring new, curricularly (no, that's not a word, but it should be!) relevant books into circulation. We have a lot of books waiting to get sponsored so our kids can check them out; we hope you can find one that you'd like to sponsor! Coming Right Up: SPRIRT WEEK!
