“Flip n Fun is an exciting
new initiative which
introduces school children
to the fundamentals of Diving in
a fun and enjoyable way. By teaching them core
skills required for Diving, they will build confidence
in the water as well as learn a new skill that until
now they have probably never had the opportunity
to try.”
“Flip n Fun is a great way to
teach youngsters the basics of
Diving. Because learning to Dive involves jumping,
tumbling and splashing, it’s an activity kids will
really love and it’s something totally different to
school sports they usually do. It’s really good to see
the ASA has put such a great package together to
make it easy to teach Diving in schools - maybe it
will help inspire Olympic medallists of the future.”

Flip n Fun has been created for children who want to
try Diving, encouraging FUNdamental movement skills in
the swimming pool.
Aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 11 years the prime objective is to have fun and give
children the chance to experience something new and challenging. Flip n Fun aims to develop
Fundamental skills and motivate and sustain participation in a positive and fun environment.
Flip n Fun is an exciting programme where participants can have fun learning new skills and
developing water confidence. Children love to jump and play and the programme has been designed
to encourage agility, co-ordination and balance, using children’s positive energy to increase their
awareness in the water.
Some of the Fundamental skills can be achieved on dryland even before entering the water. This
can improve the child’s learning pace and allow them to transfer those skills learnt on solid ground
into the water.
The Flip n Fun programme provides a fun, safe environment for children to participate in Diving, building
on the Fundamentals that could one day make them sporting champions. All the activities covered in the
programme can be practised safely under the guidance of teachers and coaches in organised classes.
Each session guides participating children through a series of basic skills, encouraging repetition,
whilst engaging the child’s full attention by making it fun. Flip n Fun is a safe, simple and structured
programme from the pool edge...falling, jumping, Diving!
VISION: For every young child to have the opportunity to get active and participate
in a Flip n Fun festival of Diving.
THE MISSION: To introduce and organise Diving festivals for young people,
encouraging participation and enjoyment through the development of
FUNdamental skills.

Harry Highboard
H
H
Harry is a real daredevil at school and is one of the bravest boys in his class.
One day when he was at his local swimming pool with his friends, the local
Diving coach asked if he wanted to come along to a session. Always up for
a new adventure, Harry said yes and he has never looked back.
Harry loves Diving, especially from the highboard. When he stands at the
top of the tower, he feels like a king of the pool and all the people below
look like little ants.
When he jumps off the highboard he feels like he is
flying and he loves it when he completes all his twists
and turns and hits the water in a nice neat line.

Sally is one of the youngest girls in her class and if you were to meet Sally, you’d think she is one of
the quietest girls you’ve ever met. But she has a hidden talent that only her very close friends know
about - she is a champion Diver.
Sally decided to try Diving after she was lucky enough to swim with dolphins on a family holiday.
As she watched them jump, spin and Dive she wished that she could do it too.
When she got back to the hotel pool she tried to flip like dolphins and with some
practice she began to Dive with grace. Back in England, she joined her local Diving
club and now she gets to Dive as often as she likes and each time she trains
she knows she’s getting closer to winning the Olympic medal she dreams of.

All about Flip n Fun
1. What is Flip n Fun?
5. What are the benefits of Flip n Fun?
Flip n Fun is a fun and exciting festival that gives
children the opportunity to experience the
“FUNdamentals” of Diving.
Diving is a disciplined sport but more importantly,
in order to be successful it is essential that children
listen to the teacher and are aware of others around
them. Children can also develop their social skills
by learning to respect rules and operate within
controlled group environments!
2. What is the Aim?
Flip n Fun provides a positive start to children’s Diving
development through a structured activity programme,
familiarising children with basic movement skills in
their schools and local swimming pools.
By establishing solid foundations Flip n Fun aims to
promote a healthier lifestyle and happier children!
Learning new skills with friends’ means there is
always something to share and talk about.
Taking responsibility for their actions and learning to
do things on their own also engenders independence
in children and encourages them to be focused on
specific but achievable goals!
3. Who can take part?
Just as a new adventure can be fun, trying something
brave and different can intensify a child’s feelings of
enjoyment, excitement and overall sense of personal
achievement.
Flip n Fun is open to all fun seeking children aged
5 - 11 years! Children participating in the pool sessions
must be water confident.
6. Appropriate Clothing
4. Why Flip n Fun?
Dryland Sessions - leotard or shorts & t-shirt
Pool Sessions - swimming costume/trunks.
Diving offers a touch of variety to the usual sports
taught in schools and can improve discipline, encourage
confidence and aid co-ordination and agility. As long
as the participant is water confident and between the
ages of 5 and 11 years there are a number of Diving
clubs and lessons that will get children Diving around
the country. Diving covers the ABC’s of Agility, Balance
and Co-ordination and the ASA Kellogg’s Flip n Fun
Awards will offer motivation and reward to those
children that complete the course successfully.
7. Flip n Fun Awards
Flip n Fun Dryland Diving Skills - Participants
must pass all Dryland Diving Session 1 & 2 skills.
Flip n Fun Pool Diving Skills - Participants must
pass all Pool Sessions 1, 2 & 3 skills.

Health & Safety Considerations
H Do you have qualified teachers to
take the sessions, with the correct
Diver/teacher ratios?
H If you are using helpers, are they
fully aware what is expected of them?
Are you confident in their ability to
achieve the tasks that you have set?
H Have you arranged an advance visit
to the pool to clarify the procedures,
including the emergency action plan
and familiarise yourself with the
facilities?
H Is your Diving programme well planned,
and does each member of staff know
exactly what is expected of them?
H Are you aware of any medical problems
that may be relevant to a child in your
group?
H Have you checked what the position
is regarding insurance for voluntary
helpers?
H Do you have a first-aid box, and
does this meet Health & Safety
guidelines?
H Is your clothing appropriate for the
activity?
H Are you familiar with the safety advice
and guidelines related to Diving?
H
PLEASE NOTE:
If your answer to any of the
above questions is NO, please
seek further information and
advice before embarking on
the Flip n Fun programme!

Hygiene & Courtesy
Swimming Pool Hygiene Code
Other considerations:
High standards of hygiene are essential to ensure
that using a swimming pool is a healthy experience.
This topic can usually be discussed with the children
away from the pool and before the first lesson.
Although it may be sufficient for them to be given a
list of ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ on the subject it is far better
if they understand why they are not allowed in the
pool in certain circumstances. Opinions on whether
children should Dive while suffering from certain
common medical conditions vary. Where there is any
doubt, professional advice should be sought from
a family doctor or school nurse. It is preferable to
exclude the child from Diving until medical advice
has been obtained rather than risk additional
complications. There are, however, some generally
accepted conditions which should lead to exclusion.
l
These include:
Diving should be an enjoyable experience for all.
Children should be taught to consider other pool users.
l
l
situation where children have, or are recovering
from, a stomach illness that has caused diarrhoea
infectious diseases
l
open wounds
l
coughs, colds and related infections such as
catarrh, sinusitis
l

l
ear infections
For further advice on aspects of
hygiene or on maintenance of
appropriate pool standards, please
contact the Institute of Sport and
Recreation Management (ISRM)
Children should maintain a high standard of
hygiene at all times
Long hair should be tied back
Jewellery can be a hazard and should be discouraged
Long shorts are not suitable attire in a learning
situation

Such consideration extends to the following:
l
l
l
l
l
l
l
Ideally children should avoid Diving within an
hour of eating a meal
Children should be encouraged to clean their shoes
before entering the changing area.
Children should be encouraged to use the toilet
and shower before going into the pool
l
arriving at, and leaving, the facility
entries and exits to the pool area
shared use of the pool
shared use of changing facilities
intrusion into other users’ space
an awareness of acceptable
noise levels
avoiding interference with
other users in a way that
may effect their enjoyment,
e.g splashing
Long Term Athlete Development
LTAD and Diving
Most parents and carers would like their children to
be active throughout life. Concerns about health,
crime and national well-being have brought sport
and physical activity into the political debate. All this,
along with a generally held belief that, taught well,
sport and physical education can develop qualities
like self-esteem, leadership and teamwork, make
sport a potential force for good. Many people
remember the fun of sport, while others with less
enjoyable experiences welcome a more consistent,
logical approach to the development of their children.
British Diving is committed to developing Divers at
all levels of the sport. Research and past experience
have led to an understanding that a structured and
progressive approach to developing the Divers of
the future is necessary. Such a structure incorporates
planning, training, competition and recovery.
It recognises that a clear Diver pathway is needed to
give each Diver the best chance of developing their
potential within the sport.
The Diver pathway is based on Dr Istvan Balyi’s
Long-term Athlete Development model (LTAD), which
is widely used in British sport. The model enables
teachers and coaches to identify and implement best
practice at each stage of the athlete’s development
and level of performance. It ensures that vital
windows of opportunity are not missed and stresses
that taking part in other sports is important. The aim
of the model is to produce young people who are
able to build on previous skills as they learn new ones.
Using the LTAD model gives every young person the
best chance of success and, importantly, increases
the chance that children will become lifelong
participants in sport.
The British Diving LTAD model has six stages, each
of which enables the Diver to develop the core skills
important at that stage. As skills can be transferred
between different sports, the Diver pathway
encourages athletes to participate in trampolining,
ballet and gymnastics. In these sports, Divers can
develop skills, such as visual awareness, coordination
and orientation, which are essential for developing
good Diving technique.
British Diving uses the LTAD model to develop the
Diver pathway in both performance and recreational
Diving. British Diving recognises the importance of
developing the different facets of the pathway,
particularly as it provides training, coaching,
competition and recovery guidance to those who
wish to become performance Divers.
