THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Plantae Tracheophyta Magnoliopsida Asterales Compositae Taxon Name: Helichrysum sp. nov. D (Miller 20020, E) Taxonomic Notes: Vouchers: Miller 20020; 20021 (E). Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Endangered B2ab(iii) ver 3.1 Year Published: 2004 Date Assessed: April 30, 2004 Annotations: Needs Updating Justification: Helichrysum dioscorides is restricted to a small refugium with a total estimated area of occupancy of less than 10 km². At present the rapid development of the island poses no threat to this unique habitat: the area is inhospitable, inaccessible by road and there is a lack of potable water. However, its restricted distribution and the very limited extent of the niche which it occupies means that it is vulnerable to any change. It is strongly suspected that this marginal habitat is threatened by the long-term trend of lower rainfall in the region and would be particularly vulnerable to the effects of global warming (Miller and Morris 2004). Geographic Range Range Description: Endemic to Soqotra. Country Occurrence: Native: Yemen (Socotra) © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Helichrysum sp. nov. Altitude of 380–530 m. Similar to Helichrysum samhaensis but distinguished by the yellow-green, non-fleshy leaves, broadly spathulate leaves. Only known from two collections, both lack mature flowers on the isolated ridge at Heger (between Riy di Isfer and Riy do Sherubrub) in the extreme east of the island. This ridge probably captures mists from the monsoon (cf. Nesocrambe socotrana and Pulicaria dioscorides). Systems: Terrestrial Credits Assessor(s): Miller, A.
