The Tarrant County Medical Society Alliance was invited to be a part of a holiday event for mothers and their children at
One Safe Place in Fort Worth. One Safe Place houses 17 different agencies who help victims of domestic violence. Before
the Christmas holiday, they had pre-selected 30 children of all ages to receive new bikes. A charity, the Brotherhood of
Marine Corps Riders, had purchased bikes of all colors and sizes for the children. The morning of the event, the Riders
rode in on their bikes (motorcycles) decked in their regalia and arranged the bikes and a bike course in the parking lot.
Inside the building, families arrived every 30 minutes. The kids were fitted with bike helmets by Alliance members as
part of the Hard Hats for Little Heads program. Police officers showed the children a bike safety video in one room while
their moms chose gifts from “Santa” for each child and themselves in another. These gifts were bagged up and taken to
their cars without the children seeing them. After the training video, the kids went out to the parking lot to choose their
bike and ride the course, with their helmet on, of course!
The kids and their moms expressed much appreciation for the helmets and the gifts. The Alliance members (L to R) Lori
Urso, Lynda Nunez, Kathy Coleman, Nola Miley, Angie Donahue and Emily Pickell had a great time fitting the helmets,
seeing the smiles and being a part of this rewarding event.
