PAY ATTENTION!
The great miracles and acts of kindness recounted
in the Bible would not have been possible if people

INSIDE THE READINGS
The Elijah-Elisha cycle is a collection of stories of
the two prophets woven into First and Second Kings.
Elijah’s name means “My God is the Lord.” Elijah is
presented as God’s prophet and intermediary. Earlier in 1 King 17, Elijah had come upon the widow of
Zarephath as she was about to cook her remaining
food (vv. 10–12). Elijah asks that she share her
food, promising that the Lord, the God of Israel, will
not allow her flour or oil to run out until the drought
has ended (vv.13–16). In today’s first reading, God
enacts an even greater miracle through Elijah. The
widow’s son is brought back to life. The unending
supply of flour and oil had not convinced her, but the
resuscitation of son leads her to acknowledge, “The
word of the Lord comes truly from your mouth” (v.
24).
In the second reading, Paul describes his call in prophetic terms. Like Jeremiah, he was set apart in his
mother’s womb (Galatians 2:15; Jeremiah 1:5).
Though he had once zealously persecuted the
church of God, he was abruptly redirected by a revelation of Jesus Christ. He testifies that the gospel
that he preaches is not of human origins. Where Elijah could verify his heavenly calling through miracles, Paul has only his preaching to certify his legitimacy. Much of the Letter to the Galatians is Paul’s
apology or defense of his apostleship, and thus his
authority to preach Christ crucified to the Gentiles.
Only in the Gospel of Luke do we find the story of
Jesus’ raising the son of the widow of Nain. It follows
the healing the centurion’s servant (Luke 7:1–10)
and precedes the questioning of the disciples sent
by John the Baptist. The resuscitation of the widow’s
son parallels the story of Elijah and leads the crowds
to announce, “A great prophet has arisen in our
midst” (v. 22). The actions of healing the sick and
lame, granting sight to the blind and hearing to the
deaf, and finally raising the dead testify that Jesus is
“the one who is to come” (v. 19).
RESPONDING IN PRAYER
Compassionate God, thank you for visiting us
through prophets like Elijah, preachers like Paul, and
most of all through your Son, Jesus Christ. Open our
eyes to the needs of all, that you might continue to
give life through us.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 5, 2016
Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months of
extraordinary celebrations. The Incarnation mystery: Jesus’
advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal mystery: Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus’ Body and Blood. Today the
Church resumes Sundays in Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life.
Yet the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy
is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this woman’s material support,
in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society’s
“peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’ hopes in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform us into
more extraordinary Christians, by making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable people, and our practical selfsacrificing love for them, our ordinary, daily, Christian way
of life!

NURSES CORNER
“I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children.
They will thrive like watered grass, like willows on a riverbank.” Isaiah 44:3b, 4.
Dehydration can occur quickly without warning and children are at greater
risk than adults because of their fluid volume and small body weights. If a
child has severe diarrhea, vomits for more than 8 hours, can’t keep fluids
down, has moderate diarrhea for more than 3 days, or is irritable, disoriented,
and much sleepier than usual, beware of dehydration. Give small amounts of
fluids frequently and increase as tolerated. For infants and young children,
the Mayo Clinic recommends an over the counter supplement called Pedialyte. This provides a balanced solution unlike the sugared, clear liquids
(ginger ale) that are frequently offered. If breast-feeding, don’t stop but
check with your doctor about additional or replacement fluids.
The weekly printing of our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the businesses
that you see advertised on the back cover.
Most of these advertisers are members of our
local community, and many belong to our
parish. We wish to sincerely thank each of
them for their support and encourage you to
support these advertisers with your patronage. If you would like to place an ad please
contact Eileen Walsh at (917) 922-0963.
