Martha Eddy, CMA, RSMT, EdD is a sought-after authority within the field of Somatic
Movement Education & Therapy & Dance Somatics
(www.DynamicEmbodiment.org), author and lecturer on how to apply dance and
body awareness to neuro-motor development (www.WellnessCKE.net) & socioemotional learning (www.InnerResilience.org ), as well as to peace education/
conflict resolution (www.EmbodyPeace.org ), social somatics
(www.MovingOnCenter.org) and ecological issues (www.GlobalWaterDances.org ).
Dr. Eddy created BodyMind DancingTM in 1986 – a system of somatic dance that
aims to teach somatic concepts while engaging each mover in joyful expression, and
Dynamic Embodiment in 1990 combining knowledge from her studies with physical
therapist and dancer Irmgard Bartenieff (Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies) and
occupational therapist and somatic movement educator Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen
(Body-Mind Centering®) She's taught both BodyMind Dancing and Dynamic
Embodiment, along with other courses, worldwide and within dance departments at
Princeton, Columbia, Hope, Hampshire, NYU and SUNY-Empire State College
Graduate Center. She works with seasoned professionals and teaching artists as
part of the faculty of the Dance Education Laboratory at the 92nd Street Y.
Martha Eddy directs the Center for Kinesthetic Education providing professional
development and workshops for the NYC Department of Education in pre-K-12
“healthy dancing” as well as teaching classroom teachers to use movement and
dance in the classroom. She provides a special focus on how to engage children with
disabilities including those on the autistic spectrum. In 1999 she developed Moving
For Life DanceExercise for Health® with a focus first on Breast Cancer Recovery.
Moving For Life (www.movingforlife.org ) is now its own non-profit organization
and has been featured on National Public Radio, and TV with NY1, CNN, Fox News,
the Today Show and CBS. These three certifications are offered periodically
(Certified Teach of BMD, MFL Certified Instructor, Dynamic Embodiment
Practitioner) in the Americas (NYC, UNC-G, Vancouver) and Europe (Cologne
Germany). She currently serves on the board of The Yard a premiere choreographic
residency on Martha’s Vineyard, Moving On Center in Oakland California, and
Moving For Life, and in the past on the boards of NDEO, CORD, the Laban/Bartenieff
Institute, and ISMETA. She was president of ISMETA (International Somatic
Movement Education and Therapy Association) during her fourteenth and fifteenth
active year on the board. Dr. Eddy works on several editorial boards representing
somatic movement. She has been performing a solo work called This Old House
around the nation since 2010, and has a long roster of performance credits
beginning with solos at the 92nd St Y at age eight.
