Our tree frogs enter the ponds and wetlands for their annual breeding rituals, with some species traveling from the forests where they spent the cooler, drier season in the trees and leaf litter. Each species has a unique call to attract females in the water, and just by listening to these voices of the night, we humans can identify the singers by name. Victoria Park is home to 6 native species in the tree frog family, plus one alien, the huge Cuban Tree Frog, that wreaks havoc on those native species — it’s big enough to eat them! Two other natives, the Spring Peeper and Southern Chorus Frog, are in Volusia County but not here in Victoria Park. The one species with which most of us are familiar is the Squirrel Tree Frog, a small frog that’s usually bright green but can turn brownish or olive. This is the tree frog that clings to outside walls of homes, behind shutters, or around outdoor lights waiting for insects. Its raspy voice is reminiscent of the scolding of a squirrel or quacking of a duck. Somewhat similar but larger, longer (about 2 inches) and with golden dots and a white stripe along each side is the beautiful Green Tree Frog. Its calls are loud “quonks” rather similar to distant cowbells. Our largest native tree frog at nearly 3 inches is the aptly named Barking Tree Frog, which sounds like a beagle barking in the night. This frog’s color varies from green to tan to yellowish, with or without spots, but the skin’s texture is always strongly granular — almost like that of a toad. The strangest breeding call is that of the small, brown or gray Pine Woods Tree Frog, which sounds like a series of “Morse code” dot-dash sounds coming from the water. Even smaller, at one inch is the very common Cricket Frog, which sounds exactly like 2 marbles clicking together. Rather than climb, this frog lives on water lily pads or along the water’s edge. Finally, our country’s tiniest frog — only ½ inch — is the Little Grass Frog. Its high-pitched tinkling voice is beyond the range of hearing for many humans, and the frog is almost impossible to see as it clings to vertical blades of aquatic grasses. Venture outside to a pond or wetland with a flashlight on some warm, drizzly evenings and treat yourself to one of nature’s most wonderful choruses. — Article and photos by John Serrao RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT M We Do Things Differently in Florida ost people when asked what they think of Florida will often reply that it’s a place in the subtropics where northerners go to get away from the cold winters (due to its “Chamber of Commerce weather”), where living is more laid back, and a “Gardener’s Paradise” with lots of blooming plants year round. In reality, many of these beliefs are only partially true. I’m sure you’ve all heard the expression: “In Florida we do things differently here.” How true that is, especially after you’ve lived here awhile. Yet many who come down here to live, try to maintain their landscapes like they did up north, which is not entirely possible. We have different soil issues, we grow different kinds of plants, (including our lawns), we have more pest issues to deal with than anywhere else, and our environment, weather, and seasons are also different. To be successful with your landscaping efforts, you are encouraged to seek helpful advice from the Volusia County Agriculture Center, (386-822-5778), which is located at the Volusia County Fairgrounds. Also check out solutionsforyourlife.com website for additional help, including 4,000+ free bulletins.
