Seaspeed gained invaluable experience
in a very short time.
Congested conditions of the Middle
Eastern ports made it evident to
Seaspeed that Ro/Ro was a viable
solution to this problem.
They embarked on a major shipbuilding and design program in Japan
and Norway to construct yet newer
generations of Ro/Ro ships especially
for the Mid-East. Using their own
engineering staff to design these ships,
and actually owning the exclusive
designs of the vessels, Seaspeed gained
an intimate knowledge of ship design
as well as ship operation.
Seaspeed ships have more than just
size alone to qualify them to be ranked
among the giants. Seaspeed ships were
designed for brute strength, a major
factor for a shipping line determined to

vehicles, heavy machinery and earth
moving equipment, along with containers, a mix of general cargo and
anything that moves on wheels.
With the strength goes an unusual
amount of clear, unobstructed space
on the cargo decks.
Both the internal and external appearance of the hull reveal the design
which has made this strength and clear
space possible. Supporting members

two to three times those used in vessels
of more conventional design.
As a result the deck strength runs
about 45 tons per axle load, or about
three times the conventional strength.

C.E. Bullock
Is Retired
The Port of Houston Authority lost
the services of a shipping industry great
last
month when C. E. "Chuck"
Bullock retired.
Mr. Bullock
had served
the
Authority
as Associate
General
Manager since September, and he had
held positions at the head of the
Operations Department throughout his
almost 19 years with the Port.
Mr. Bullock has seen the Port of
Houston grow and change. He was
here when foreign ships and cargoes
began to out-number domestic trade
and he watched as the emphasis waned
on cotton shipments and the Ship
Channel refineries expanded. The only
time he was absent was during World
War II when he served with distinction
with the Marinesin the Pacific.
Mr. Bullock’s fellow employees gave
a small party in his honor last month
and wished him well. He intends to
spend time with his wife, daughter and
two grandchildren,
and to hunt and
fish as muchas possible.

In a reversal of the usual flow of

the Brazilian ship "CABODOSAO

unloaded a rice combine at
the Port of Houston recently, to be
usedin U.S.rice fields.
The big machine, poweredby a Mercedes Benz diesel engine, looks and
weighs muchthe same as the old J.I.

popular with rice farmers until production was ended some years ago. The
Case Company
licensed the huge Santa
