To understand what ‘Intervene’ means to individuals To understand what ‘Intervene’ means to individuals. 2. Awareness of the importance of intervention in saving lives and preventing injuries 3. Understand why some people hesitate to intervene and how to overcome this. 4. Debate how people can react when someone intervenes with them p p 5. Facilitate and support implementation strategies to improve intervention Does not matter who you are , you can all intervene PDO MD II know it know it’ss not easy, it takes courage. Sometimes you receive push‐back, and some not easy it takes courage Sometimes you receive push back and some colleagues may even say “Its none of your business” but it is, its your right, your responsibility to intervene because we should all care. What matters is that you can save a life or prevent an injury by stepping‐in But remember step‐in politely because you care p p y y Listen and accept politely because you are important Intervention What is an intervention? 1.A conversation between at least two people 2.Should relate to a safe or an unsafe act 3 Learning opportunity 3.Learning opportunity 4.Includes open questions and active listening 5.Focuses on what could go wrong g g 6.Agrees an immediate action 7.Focus on the behaviours, not the individual Why do we want everyone to intervene? Care for each other save lives and prevent Care for each other, save lives and prevent injuries creating a safer working environment You and I are responsible to intervene with each other. Failure to intervene is like Failure to intervene is like an unsafe act. Whenever somebody intervenes with you, there is only one correct answer – THANK YOU! Peer to Peer Intervention What is different about peer to peer interventions? Colleagues in the same team (peers) can and do look out for each other. Intervention with a peer can happen before a rule is broken OR to correct an unsafe act or situation. Intervention I t ti and d reporting ti within ithi your tteam iis a llearning i opportunity t it and d will ill not normally be subject to disciplinary action if the unsafe activity stops immediately. When you intervene with a peer you are helping to keep them safe and stay out of trouble. Please report all interventions as it helps the company learn and b become an even safer f place l to t work. k Incident Reporting What is an Incident? An incident is an unplanned or undesired event that can cause injury, asset A i id t i l d d i d t th t i j t damage and or impact environment or reputation. Sh ld I report Incidents? Should I id ? Report all incidents, whether they are Near Misses or Incidents with or without Injury, Asset Damage or Environmental Impact. Report to your Line Supervisor without fear of reprisal. Why should I report Incidents? An incident that could have caused illness, injury or damage to assets the environment or company reputation but did not assets, the environment or company reputation, but did not. All incidents are Reportable irrespective of whether recordable or not d bl Why Intervention is Important: Let us review few incidents / conditions, where timely intervention could have y prevented incident / unsafe conditions: Crane toppled – Dangerous occurrence While offloading the concrete poles, the crane toppled. Pickup Rollover A speeding Driver lost his control over the vehicle while travelling on rights-of-way rights of way (ROW) and the vehicle moved to the L/H side edge of the road. Driver steered to his right and simultaneously applied brake to control the vehicle, which resulted into roll over. They choose the Private ROW (Shortcut road) as decided to reach destination early. Unsafe Act One employee was standing into the wooden box, full of Master seal container i which hi h was lifted lif d with ih forklift around 0.75 m above from the ground level. He was shifting the material t i l from f box b from f one side id and d standing on other side. This cause misbalancing of the load and the box fell down, down caused muscle pain on his left leg. • Pick up vehicle was driving towards k h l d d Haima coming from Sayyala station after completion of job. • Driver lost control over the vehicle when he tried to move away from a b bumpy area in the road i th d and it d it swerved to the right side of the road then hit the shoulder and tipped over to the right side. workshop foreman was changing the Fan direction h i h di i while doing that the fan was on, at the same time foreman h i f had hit the rotating fan and h he got cut in his right hand i hi i h h d middle finger Tragic accident happened near Runip ( towards RIMA) road, where head‐on collision occurred between a trailer and a canter. As per initial report 3 persons in the canter were killed on the spot.
