Headmaster’s Message
The end of the year is always much anticipated and appreciated after a productive and busy school
calendar. This year is no exception. The pupils and teachers have enjoyed a good year in the
classroom and a rewarding co-curricular programme. They now have a welcome opportunity to enjoy
rest, relaxation and social occasions.
At the last few Award ceremonies, you heard me talk about our country where poverty is increasing
at an alarming rate, and where the unemployed are becoming ever-increasingly unemployable. I also
touched on the number of our premier universities erupting into ungovernable chaos as a result of a
hike in tuition fees. There is much bad news in the world and many warnings of the difficult times that
lie ahead. Such times affect schools deeply, especially through our community. We are aware that the
school needs to weather these storms and Glenwood will always attempt to be a good and kind place
for every member of the school community.
Again, allow me to thank you for investing in your child’s education and choosing Glenwood. It is for
this reason that rest and recuperation over the holiday are important, so that we can return in the
new year ready to tackle new challenges and to ensure a good education and provide a safe, happy
space for all our Glenwoodians.
I wish you all a peaceful and blessed Christmas.
From Finance
Parents who prefer to pay their school fees for 2016 annually to qualify for the additional 5 % discount, should
please inform the bursar urgently via email ([email protected]) if this has not yet been done.
Santa Claus for Kidstop
Each year the Grade 7s of Glenwood House
Preparatory School decide upon a theme, which is
supported by the whole school, to raise awareness
of the needs of others. This year it was to create a
Santa Claus and to fill his sack with toys and teddies.
A variety of fruit and vegetables were used to make
Santa’s face and hat and then the entire contents
were donated to KIDSTOP.

Bless-A-Child Christmas Party
Glenwood House hosted the 12th Bless-A-Child
Christmas Party this year. What an absolute
pleasure it was to spend time with some of
the hundreds of children who attend the Life
Community Programme. It was such a privilege to
spoil these youngsters a bit!
Thank you to the entire Glenwood family, MySchool,
PNA, Diskonto, McDonald’s, Rainbow Inflatables,
Mrs vd Watt, Mrs Schutte and the Glenwood Leo
Club for making this day possible.

Grade 11 IeBT
In addition to the annual International Benchmarking Exercises that our Grade 3, 6, and 9 pupils write every year,
the school participates in a wide variety of benchmarking exercises and subject Olympiads. The IEB established and
developed a range of benchmarking tests for use by its schools to ascertain the standard of teaching in key aspects such
as critical thinking and problem-solving. Among these are the Grade 10 and 11 Thinking Skills Tests as well as the IeBT’s
in Grade 11 Mathematics and Physical Science.
In 2014 Glenwood House School featured one pupil in the top 1% of the country and the average for the class was
significantly above that of the national IEB average.
I am happy to report that the Grade 11 Physical Sciences IeBT’s reflect the same standard:
•
24 pupils wrote the benchmark test;
•
The average of all pupils from all the IEB schools who wrote was 48,18%;
the average for the Glenwood House pupils was 57,08%;
•
3 pupils (12,5%) obtained a distinction (above 80%) result;
•
21% of the pupils obtained a result above 70%;
•
50% of the pupils obtained a result above 60%;
•
71% of the pupils obtained a result above 50%.
These benchmarking tests are set on a high standard (as can be seen from the average in total) and rigorously assess
the pupils.
The fact that the Glenwood House average is nearly 10% above that of the national average of IEB schools is a phenomenal
result. This knowledge confirms that the standard of teaching and learning in Grade 11 Physical Science, and the ability
of the pupils to solve problems by thinking critically, are competitive and (significantly) above average.
The results for the Grade 10 Thinking Skills, the Grade 11 IeBT Mathematics, and the International Benchmarking Tests
are not yet known – this will be made available to you when we receive it.
